Dewgong (Japanese: ジュゴン Jugon) is a dual-type Water/Ice Pokémon.

It evolves from Seel starting at level 34.

Biology

Physiology

It resembles a seal. Its body is extremely streamlined. Its streamlined allows Dewgong to swim up to 8 knots, even in bitterly cold waters. Its fins are larger and stronger and its tail more devoloped than Template:P2. Its long tail is able to change swimming direction quickly, when needed. It is covered in pure white coat of fur that obscures it from view of predators, when in the snow. It also has a layer of Thick Fat, that allows it to store thermal energy and protects it from intensely cold water and air.

Behavior

Dewgong are very active in bitterly cold tempretures. At night, Dewgong go out hunting for food, after sleeping most of the day. It loves to sleep under shallow ocean waters or on ice floes.

Pryce's Dewgong

The Seel belonging to the Cerulean Gym evolved into Dewgong in The Misty Mermaid.

A Dewgong was one of the Pokémon that were captured and cloned by Mewtwo in Mewtwo Strikes Back.

A Dewgong has also been used by Pryce in As Cold as Pryce and Nice Pryce Baby.

A Dewgong appeared in Up Close and Personable!.

In the manga

Lorelei uses a Dewgong in Pokémon Special. It is capable of using Ice Beam to create paths of solid ice on which it moves, similar to Iceman.

In Volume 4 of The Electric Tale of Pikachu, Rudy's sister is seen drowning with a Dewgong instead of a Seel like in the anime.

Hail

Surf and Ice Beam are a must. They’re both STAB attacks and have high power on their own. Those two moves alone can defeat any Steel, Fire, Grass, or Dragon-type that may come against you. Hail is to do extra damage to any non-Ice-type pokémon for five turns straight (even if they use Protect). Signal Beam rounds out the moveset with the ability to beat Psychic-type pokémon with ease. The problem for most people, though, is to get Signal Beam. If you have Pokémon LeafGreen or FireRed version, go to Mt. Moon, get two Tinymushrooms or one Bigmushroom, then go to Two Island and go to the guy in the house diagonal to the Poké Mart, give him two Tinymushrooms or one Bigmushroom and he’ll teach Dewgong Signal Beam. If you don’t have LeafGreen or FireRed, you may mate two Dewgong and get the move that way (it’s a 50/50 chance). I hope this moveset helps!

Trivia

• "Manaty" was the original English name for Dewgong.
• Dewgong is the first Ice Pokémon in National Pokédex order.
• Despite several of Dewgong's Pokédex entries referring to it having pure white fur, all of its sprites since Generation I have been slightly blue, a bit like those of Seel. However, Dewgong's shiny sprite is pure white.
• Despite its Pokédex entry stating that its pure white fur camouflages it from predators in snowy conditions, it does not have the Snow Cloak ability.
• Its Generation I backsprite shows its horn in pointing the opposite direction.

Origin

Dewgong is based on north-seas/arctic seals, seal Lions, fur seal or manatees, such as the Harp Seal, Hooded Seal or ringed seal.

Name origin

Dewgong's name is a corruption of dugong, which is a relative of the manatee, although it appears to have more in common with a sea lion than a sea cow. Jugon is also a corruption of dugong. The dew could also be intended to refer to the water found in mist.
