Battle Mode is a mode in the Pokémon Stadium series in which players can battle against each other or against a CPU opponent using either rental Pokémon available in the game or Pokémon transferred from the Generation I and Generation II core series games.

Battles take place in a stadium selected by the player. In Pokémon Stadium 2, multiple battlefields are available; however, as moves such as Nature Power, Secret Power, and Camouflage are not present in these games, the choice of field is purely aesthetic.

Pokémon Stadium

Up to four players can participate in Battle Mode. A CPU opponent may also be included; in Pokémon Stadium 2, the CPU opponent is represented by Cal. The CPU difficulty can be set to Easy, Normal, or Hard.

Players may compete individually or form teams. Each player selects up to three Pokémon prior to the start of the battle. The order in which players select their Pokémon determines turn priority at the start of the battle. During the selection screen, pressing the L Button resets all selections, while holding the R Button displays the Pokémon chosen by the player and their partner. Pokémon are selected using the A and B Buttons and the C Buttons.

Because Double Battles were not introduced until Generation III, battles involving more than two players are conducted as team battles. In these cases, up to two players may form a team. Each player may bring up to six Pokémon, either from a connected Transfer Pak (from Generation I games, or Generation II in Pokémon Stadium 2) or from the available rental Pokémon. From these, each player selects three Pokémon to use in battle.

Each player controls only the Pokémon they selected. To switch to a teammate’s Pokémon, the teammate must first initiate a switch and then select the desired Pokémon using the corresponding C Button.

Players may select from a variety of stadiums, some of which are based on locations in Kanto and Johto. Battles continue until all of one side’s Pokémon have fainted.

Pokémon Stadium 2

In Pokémon Stadium 2, Battle Mode includes multiple rulesets, which are determined by the selected Cup. The rules for each Cup can be viewed on the selection screen by pressing the R Button.

In Pokémon Stadium, the only ruleset available in Battle Mode is "Anything Goes", which allows for team battles (including two-on-one and two-on-two formats). In Pokémon Stadium 2, additional rulesets are available for both one-on-one and two-on-two battles.

Under rulesets other than "Anything Goes" in Pokémon Stadium 2, certain restrictions apply to team battles. In two-on-two battles, players cannot switch into their own Pokémon directly. Instead, they must alternate switching into their teammate’s Pokémon. A team loses if all of one player’s Pokémon have fainted, regardless of how many Pokémon their partner has remaining.

In both games, "Anything Goes" is the only ruleset that permits full six-on-six battles.

The Custom Cup allows players to define their own rules, including level restrictions and limitations on which Pokémon may be used. Battle Mode also allows players to register Pokémon sets for use in Cups or Free Battle Mode, with up to ten sets able to be registered per Cup.

Pokémon transferred from the Game Boy and Game Boy Color core series games can also be registered and used. When such Pokémon are used, the Trainer may be represented with a different character portrait than the default.

Pokémon Stadium (Japanese)

In the Japanese version of Pokémon Stadium, Battle Mode differs slightly from international releases in terms of available features and presentation.

The Japanese version is based on the original release (Pocket Monsters Stadium), which includes a more limited selection of Pokémon and features compared to later international versions. As a result, Battle Mode supports fewer usable Pokémon and rental options.

Additionally, certain interface elements and menu layouts differ, reflecting the earlier development version of the game. Some text and terminology also vary due to localization changes in later releases.

Unlike Pokémon Stadium 2, which was developed after the release of Generation II games, the Japanese version of Pokémon Stadium only supports Pokémon from Generation I titles and does not include compatibility with Generation II games.

Overall, Battle Mode in the Japanese version is more limited in scope, lacking some refinements and expanded options introduced in later versions of the game.
