Early History of Pokémon in Turkey
Exact date of the first airing is unknown, but some Turkish fan websites claim the Pokémon anime was first shown in Turkey on January 1, 2000 on ATV[1], though others claim it was the end of 1999[2]. The first movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back, was shown in theaters in Summer 2000, and the second movie, Power of One, was shown in theaters in 2001.
Reports of flying kids
In Turkey, there were two separate reports of kids flying off their windows while claiming to be Pokémon in 2000. One of these was Ferhat Ağırbaş, a four year old child from Mersin[3]. Another was Seyda Aykanat, a seven year old student from Kilis[4].
RTÜK Controversy
RTÜK, or Radio and Television Supreme Council of Turkey, has declared a ban on the airing of the series as a part of Article 4 of Act No. 3984, due to having "a negative influence on the physical, psychological and moral development of children."[5] A later attempt at revival by Star TV in 2005 was stopped by RTÜK[6].
Presidency of Religious Affairs
The magazine of Presidency of Religious Affairs, Diyanet, has reiterated similar claims by RTÜK on March 2nd, 2005[7].
Games
Though the games and consoles themselves have been sold by private retailers previously, after the release of Wii and DS, a distributor for Turkey, Nortec Eurasia, took the mantle of Nintendo Turkey, releasing the NDS titles, Diamond & Pearl, which went to become best sellers in Turkey.[8] However, after the bankruptcy of Nintendo Turkey, this was abandoned.[9][10].
Contemporary history of Pokémon animé
The Pokémon animé started reairing on September 1, 2014, beginning with the seventeenth season. In Turkey, Pokémon currently airs on Disney XD.
Pokémon movies
Almost all the Pokémon movies until the seventeenth were translated and dubbed in Turkish as well.
Only the eighth and the tenth movies have never been dubbed into Turkish.
The special episode Mewtwo Returns was also released in Turkish with the title Pokémon Özel Film: Mewtwo’nun Geri Dönüşü.
The seventeenth movie premiered on January, 2016 on Disney XD Turkey.
Music
Prior to season 10, only the English opening themes were used for the series, taken from the American dub. Despite this, a Turkish version of Pokémon Theme was released on CD.
Since the fourteenth season premiere, Turkish dubbed opening themes have been used for the series. The seventeenth Turkish opening, that is a remix of Pokémon Theme, uses the same lyrics of this one, just like with other countries' dubs.
