Talk:Pokémon in Turkey

Latest comment: 28 April by 4iamking in topic Move

Wow, this article is so historically incorrect, it almost unfunny. So, is anyone capable of properly revising this, or do I have to step in? Trainer Yusuf (talk) 13:28, 27 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

If you see something incorrect, you are more than welcome to fix it. This wiki is a collaborate effort, after all. --Pokemaster97 04:09, 28 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Unauthorized move

Shouldn't there be at least some discussion before moving this page, especially considering that it's a politically-heavy thing. The Turkish government may insist on calling their country "Türkiye" in all possible languages, but this practice is still far from being widespread. It's a thing for diplomats and politicians, anyway. Colloquial names exist and there's time and place for using them, for example when talking about a children's video game. We're not bound by any diplomatic protocol here, there's no need to be this correct. I'd say move the page back. --Maxim (talk) 14:45, 24 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

I agree, Google maps doesnt doesnt even label the country as "Türkiye"... There is a bigger case for Pokémon in the Czech Republic to be moved since the Czech government has been lobbying for a change and it is more internationally recognised as "Czechia" but we haven't done that yet. The day may come but as far as the English language is concerned its still "Turkey" imo.-- 4iamking (talk) 14:50, 24 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
Just to update, I moved the page back and undid the edits that changed "Turkey" to "Türkiye" in the article, I strongly feel like such a change ought to have been discussed first.-- 4iamking (talk) 15:16, 24 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
I think this is about time we can consider moving the page to Türkiye? It is listed as "Türkiye" on the United Nations Member States page. It has become more widespread around the globe. Google Maps changed it to Türkiye. International organizations such as Olympics, Eurovision, UEFA, FIFA are all using Türkiye. — Rockapheller (talk page) 05:42, 28 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Move

To centralize this discussion; lets keep to Talk:Pokémon in the Czech Republic#Move as the reasons for doing so would be the same. 4iamking 16:42, 28 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Current policy per BP:TITLE is to use the common name for real-world topics. "For example, the article "Pokémon in Brazil" uses the common name Brazil instead of the country’s official name, the Federative Republic of Brazil." Landfish7 17:12, 28 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
That's kinda the point though; both countries have underwent common name changes; "Türkiye" isn't the same as "Republic of Türkiye" (which would have been their official name). 4iamking 17:20, 28 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Czechoslovakia, sure. I'd say Türkiye is more debatable though. Landfish7 17:21, 28 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Both countries' articles on the English Wikipedia are still titled Czech Republic and Turkey under their WP:COMMONNAME policy, since those names are still more commonly used in English-language sources. The newsletter sign-up on Pokemon.com also uses "Czech Republic" and "Turkey" as well. --Abcboy (talk) 19:10, 28 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ah, I didn't catch that the Wikipedia article for Czechoslovakia is about the former country. I would also point out that Turkey is an exonym, in the same way that we'd call the country Germany and not Deutschland. Landfish7 19:39, 28 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Worth noting though that the recent Prague regionals tournament uses "Czechia" thats kinda where I started at. 4iamking 20:03, 28 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
