11 links 12 to Vermilion City. There are only a few Trainers here, but it does lead back to the Snorlax just outside the city. To wake it up, tune the Pokégear's radio to the Poké Flute Channel and examine snoozing creature to place the radio near it. Annoyed, it attacks the nearest living thing. After the battle, Diglett's Cave is no longer blocked, leaving you free to continue through the tunnel.

There is nothing on 11 except a handful of Trainers and a berry tree.  However, it does get you where you want to go - the sleeping Snorlax on Vermilion's eastern border.  To wake it up, tune the Pokégear's radio to the Poké Flute channel (20.0), and press the B Button.  Exit the menu, and check on Snorlax to place the radio near the snoozing creature.  It wakes up annoyed, and attacks the closest living thing.  After the battle, enter Diglett's Cave.

Diglett's Cave is a short tunnel that connects the eastern border of Vermilion with 2 in the west.  There is nothing of major interest here, though this is the only location to find wild Diglett and Dugtrio. Trek through the tunnel, and you'll emerge just south of Pewter City.
2 connects Viridian City to the south and Pewter City to the north. Visit the man in the house to get a Nugget, then pass through the gate and cut through the trees to reach the west side. Hike through the remains of Viridian Forest on the way northward.

Emerging from Diglett's Cave, pick up the Vitamin to the northeast.  Visit the man in the house south of here to obtain a Nugget.  Pass through the gate to the route's southernmost extent to find an Elixer.  Cut through the line of trees to access the route's west side.  Battle the two Bug Catchers, and wander into the remains of Viridian Forest.  Grab the items along the way, battle the third Bug Catcher, and go north to enter Pewter City.

Time for a Trade
A man inside the Pokémon Center would like to trade. He is looking for a Gloom, and is willing to trade his Rapidash for it.

The Pewter Gym specializes in Rock Pokémon. Grass attacks—like the Giga Drain TM move from Celadon Gym—will inflict heavy damage against all six Pokémon in the building. In addition, Brock's Graveler, Rhyhorn, and Onix are weak against Water moves, while his Omastar and Kabutops are vulnerable to Electric attacks. Look out for Earthquake and Sandstorm, which takes its toll on all but Rock, Ground, and Steel Pokémon.

Speak to him to receive either the Silver Wing or the Rainbow Wing, a feather he found while training in Johto. This allows you to track down the other legendary bird, either Appendix:Gold and Silver walkthrough/Section 9 or Appendix:Gold and Silver walkthrough/Section 8.

Stop by the Poké Center and heal your team if needed, and head east for 3.  Near the Pewter city limits, you'll see an old man strolling around.  Talk to him, and he'll give you an item he found while training in Johto, the List of key items in Generation II (<span style="color:#B69E00">Gold</span>) / List of key items in Generation II (<span style="color:#979797">Silver</span>).  With this, Gold players can now encounter Lugia in the Whirl Islands, and Silver players can encounter Ho-Oh on the roof of the Tin Tower.

Go east to 3.

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon Gold and Silver.
These pages follow the original Game Boy Color iteration, not Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. The guide for those games can be found here.

Route 11

Route 11

Route 11 links Route 12 to Vermilion City.

Diglett's Cave

Diglett's Cave

With the Fuchsia beach blocked off, the only other way to reach western Kanto is through Diglett's Cave, a long tunnel that links Vermilion's east side with Route 2 in the northwest.

Route 2

Route 2

Route 2 connects Viridian City to the south and Pewter City to the north. Visit the man in the house to get a Nugget, then pass through the gate and cut through the trees to reach the west side. Hike through the remains of Viridian Forest on the way northward.

Pewter City

Pewter City

Pewter City is home to two major attractions—the Pewter Museum of Science and the Pewter Gym. The museum has closed for renovations, but the Gym is still accepting challengers.

Time for a Trade

A man inside the Pokémon Center would like to trade. He is looking for a Gloom, and is willing to trade his Rapidash for it.

The Rock Solid
POKéMON Trainer

The Pewter Gym specializes in Rock-type Pokémon. Grass-type attacks—like the Giga Drain TM move from Celadon Gym—will inflict heavy damage against all six Pokémon in the building.

The Boulder Badge

Defeated, Brock awards you the Boulder Badge, which gives your party a slight Attack boost in battle.

The Second Feather

There is an old man strolling around the east side of town. Speak to him to receive either the Silver WingG or the Rainbow WingS, a feather he found while training in Johto. This allows you to track down the other legendary bird, either Lugia in the Whirl IslandsG or Ho-Oh atop Tin TowerS.
