The Ice Path (Japanese: こおりのぬけみち Ice Path) is a four-floored cave located in the Johto region that connects Route 44 with Blackthorn City.
In the games
The Ice Path is known for its numerous ice puzzles, which vary in size and difficulty. One example is a Strength puzzle, involving pushing boulders into holes in order to progress. It is the only place in Johto where wild Swinub, Jynx, and Delibird can be caught.

Layout
In Pokémon Gold and Silver, the Ice Path looked like an average cave. It was redesigned in Pokémon Crystal, having received a completely new and unique tile set that better depicts it as an icy cave as well as changes in the features and puzzles. Its design in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver is thus modeled after the Pokémon Crystal design.
In the anime
The Ice Path in the anime, referred to as the Ice Cave
The Ice Path has not appeared by name in the anime. The Ice Cave, which serves the same role as the Ice Path, appeared in EP250, which is a banned episode. The Ice Cave had a Pokémon Center inside where Nurse Joy was aided by a Jynx rather than a Chansey.
Trivia
- In Generation II, it was completely possible for the player to go through the Ice Path without noticing HM07. This was changed in Generation IV, where an NPC was added to point out the HM in case the player missed it.
Effects on walking Pokémon
- The walking Pokémon becomes more cautious. As it is cool, Ice-type Pokémon are happy while Grass-type Pokémon aren't. Ground-type and Flying-type Pokémon constantly shiver. Other Pokémon curiously interact with surrounding ice.
- On the ice tiles, the walking Pokémon likes to slide around, and sometimes stares as its own reflection.
