Pokemon rarity classification

The Pokémon pages have, among others, rare, common, uncommon, many, few, always... Is their any "official" classification for these, or is it just from the guide that the user is reading. If it is the second option, wouldn't it be better to use the percentages? SavageWolf 19:11, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Fake cards? :D

I'll trust your opinion on this matter, but what are the chances of dedicating a few articles at Bulbapedia on the topic of the art of Fake Pokemon TCG cards? I think it might be appropriate for Project Fandom, but it might be TOO fan-made to be of any relevance on Bulbapedia. Whaddya' say? - Nick15 07:06, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

That's a good question. I'd throw the primary questions at Nate to see if you can do something with it (since he's the TCG guy), and then after you've made an example article in the userspace or something...
But eh, I suppose it'd probably alright. We have an article on hack games... TTEchidna 07:09, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
Yeah I figured that maybe it would be a cool series of articles to add in, considering that it is a major part of the Pokemon community at large, and one that has been "officially recognized" by Nintendo and Wizards of the Coast (like Nintendo added/accepted fake cards in their fan art pages and Wizards had a "Create-A-Card" forum at WizPoG). I mean, there ARE Bulbapedia articles about plenty of other things in the Pokemon fan community, such as the aforementioned hacking community, popular Pokemon fan sites, *shipping (especially *shipping), "fanon", fake Pokemon, fanfiction, among other things. I'd even argue that fake cards--and not just graphical fakes but all manner of fan-made custom cards, as well as those lame fakes like a Psychic Rattata that does 5000 damage--is the largest Pokemon-based fan-community NOT included in Bulbapedia!
I suppose if it does gets the go-ahead, I could set up the base articles, maybe even create a "Project Fake Card" community (a la Project Fandom, Project Anime, etc). However, I'd probably have to relegate most of writing it--or at least making it look and read more Bulbapedia-friendly--to someone a bit more active at Bulbapedia than myself. Though I doubt a helper would be hard to find. BTW, what's "the userspace" for me to make an example article in? - Nick15 01:11, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
The userspace is anything with "User:" in front. Meaning, you have a sandbox, use it! TTEchidna 02:18, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
See, this is why I call myself a noob. Only a noob that's been here since almost the beginning. :3 How do I shot web-- er, activate my sandbox? "User:Nick15/Sandbox"? - Nick15 04:09, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
User:Nick15/Sandbox is the page. Then just have fun. Anything with "User:(username)/" in front of it is part of that user's userspace, alongside their own base userpage. Try not to edit it too much or we'll be taking away the ability, but considering you're one of the senior members of the fandom we'd likely be a tiny bit more lenient with you than with a totally new user, since totally new users tend to make 50,000 edits to put a period in. TTEchidna 05:30, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
All-reet! Good to know, merci beaucoup! And I'll try my best not to abuse it, or at least not make a lot of numerous minor edits. If I make a lot of userspace pages, I promise to make nothing but "all-at-once,all-or-nothing" type edits. Thanks again! (^_^) - Nick15 22:38, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Stats

I just noticed what you are trying to do so from Ponyta onwards I will make the appropriate updates for the Stats section as I add Pokéthlon, but can you get the number Pokémon before Ponyta for me since I don't have time and have to leave soon before I can resume working? -Tyler53841 17:19, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

Not an immediate concern, but it will be picked up soon. By the time I'd be able to get to it someone would have done it already. TTEchidna 17:21, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

Town infobox

So I borrowed your design like we talked this morning, and came up with this. You can see many examples on the talk page. Basically, it works perfectly, except in some cases large spaces are created and I can't fix them. Can you locate the problem? Once you fix it, I think we're good to go. --electAbuzzzz 16:38, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

Will do later on today. TTEchidna 16:55, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

Wierd glitch with the Pwnsome Cubone Award

Whenever I try to award it, it engulfs the rest of the page. Same with the usertag associated with it. Please fix it, and tell me how to make it not happen again. I will let you edit my subpages this time. Alpha CuboneKing 17:16, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

Really somebody please help me. Alpha CuboneKing 20:37, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

Ok then. Just wondering. ht14 02:38, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
What about this? I can have it ready to be reintegrated into the template soon after getting your OK.--MisterE13 20:24, 17 October 2009 (UTC)

Need a Little help=

If you have the chance could you fix the code for the collapsible boxes on Deoxys page for the Pokéthlon stats. I tried my best but I was only half-sucessful. Also if you can could you created the Pokéthlon stats for Giratina's formes on the Giratina page for the Pokéthlon stats in the same manner because once this is done then the Pokéthlon stats will be complete since my main sweep on adding them has been complete. Of course I deeply apologize for any inconvenience. -Tyler53841 15:51, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

Half successful is right. You tried to close the collapsing table to early, and didn't have the switch statements right. For the forme changers, copying the switchcode from the same page is usually the best way to go.
Anyway, you've got Deoxys and Giratina... but what about Shaymin? TTEchidna 15:59, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
I would have done the swithces them but a certain Trombonator told me not to put them in, now that you approve, I'll get to them later.--MisterE13 16:11, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Nah, I can handle it now, unless you know their Pokéthlon stats. TTEchidna 16:14, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Actually, almost no one else can handle it now... the page is protected. (I don't really mind it, but I find it strange that admins can lock the page just for a regular edit, while protection is not really intended for that and there is the template {{Inuse}} for specifically informing others to not edit the page... this is not the first time I see this.</rant>) UltimateSephiroth (about me · chat · edits) 16:19, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Which page, Giratina, Shaymin, or Deoxys? Deoxys I protected so no one would conflict me while editing, considering that's the easier thing to do than throwing up the inuse template. Plus, I usually protect it for a very limited amount of time to do so. TTEchidna 16:23, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Shaymin's already done I am working on a full page preview for Giratina to avoid cutting the rest of the material out below like what happened before, but with this server problem my tests are going to take awhile to confirm if I can make it work. -Tyler53841 16:40, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Believe me, for the forme changers, fullpage is the best idea. TTEchidna 16:56, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I meant the Deoxys article... but as I said, I don't mind and wasn't going to edit it myself, just wanted to point out the strangeness of this method. (503 errors, edit conflicts and process data losses keep appearing again, damn) UltimateSephiroth (about me · chat · edits) 17:05, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Believe me, if you had the ability to do it, you would too. TTEchidna 17:08, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

Giratina has just been completed. I perfected it by changing the code to match that at Shaymin's page. The one to also thank is Ht14 who helped me on this project and dealt with some of the similar pages since I normally don't do well at creating template code, though I can modify it if I do it carefully. The Dexoys business only started because the Preview button wasn't of any use even when I compared it with Wormadam. Now to close this up I was also thinking on the Pokéthlon stats and wondering if anything needs to be done to make it easier to understand for people to know that the stats represent the maximum stats and not the starting stats or are people just going to assume the truth? If you want to do anything about this I'll be happy to help. -Tyler53841 17:10, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

Well, personally, I wonder if the 'thlon stats should be changed around so that it's shorter but wider... Any idea yet what causes the difference in the Pokémon's current Pokéthlon stats vs their maximum? Is it the regular stats? Random? What? TTEchidna 17:39, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Well I know it has to do with Apricorn drinks, check out the Apricorn page. But anyway my original plan was to either modify the template with this note or change the header but if you have any ideas like changing the template then go ahead such as if you want to shade some of the stars to represent what their beginning stats were. But since I know you have a copy of the game you might be able to pull off some tests, or we'll wait a long while if this is going to be a long-term project. Also I only wanted to tell you this after the adding was completed some it would be quicker to fix when ready. -Tyler53841 17:49, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Well of course, but the Aprishakes are just like HP Up, Protein, Iron, Calcium, Zinc, and Carbos in that regard. I'm talking about the base determinant, like IVs, rather than the additive, like EVs. And mock up a variation of the template and I'll take a look at it. TTEchidna 17:53, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Look at the picture of Celebi posted here on Serebii.net [1] which shows what I was talking about when I mentioned about the stars and that I had seen the stars light up when the juice is used in a video on youtube, but right now I can't look into it because the site videos are inaccessible due to maintenance. If you want either a header change or be added new code to explain that the stats are the maximized stats (similar to the template notes on Base stats) would work as a substitute until further detail on how many stars on each stat that a Pokémon starts with are uncovered. -Tyler53841 18:07, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Perhaps. Like I said, mock up a version of the template like that and I'll check it out. TTEchidna 18:24, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

I've been trying but I have been looking through the instructions to do this and I am getting anything since I never done this before and not trying to give up on this even though I can't even locate a template with a search engine. All I really need is something like this "The stats present only represent the maximum Pokéthlon stats for that Pokémon. More details to follow later.". If I could find out how or if you do something then this might work. -Tyler53841 19:00, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

Doesn't take anything more than copying the code to your sandbox and playing with it. TTEchidna 19:06, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Right here is what I have but note that this is the best I can do at the moment (Tyler53841/Sandbox), since I don't know where to find the original coding. -Tyler53841 19:23, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Um, der? In the template. Template:Pokéthlon. TTEchidna 19:26, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Iffy. I'll work on some. TTEchidna 19:43, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Oh well, but at least I took my best shot. I swear someday I'll enroll in a computer coding class to improve my skills. But anyway as I said using a picture like the one on with Quilava on Pokéthlon stats then the template can be furthered improve once more adequate details are found. Thats all for now, Bye. -Tyler53841 19:57, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Wiki isn't anything like any other code. It's the easiest thing you'd ever know. Just practice more with it. TTEchidna 20:06, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

This

Do you think its possible? Like to have Spinda sprites change to a random, though defined, PV then generate R/S/FR/LG, E and DP/Pt Spinda sprites corresponding to that PV?--MisterE13--15:08, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

...four... billion possibilities, E. Billion. It'd be easily handled, sure, but... why? TTEchidna 23:03, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I guess. At least I didn't want them all to be uploaded seperately.--MisterE13 22:18, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
Even using a generator, though, that'd be four billion images on BMG's servers. TTEchidna 22:28, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
OK then, just wondering I guess I have to get on that spotless Emerald sprite then. Also, could you move Template:Sprite/4/2formesnew to Template:Sprite/4/2formesnew/Pt so it fits with Notchie's--MisterE13 21:21, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
Auuugh... I'm gonna redesign the dang thing completely soon anyway. TTEchidna 21:26, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
OK, you know it exists though now. Speaking of redesigns, what happened to the Side Games template?
That'll be taken care of when I'm less busy with other stuff. Considering how little I really pay attention to the side games, that is. Plus I'm playing SoulSilver, so I'm distracted. TTEchidna 21:30, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Mind if I have a try at it?--MisterE13 00:00, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

I've already got it set up, the only thing remaining is for me to do my switch-statement handiwork. TTEchidna 00:12, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

Do you think we could get braille and unown fonts onto the server? We could show the coded messages in the games and translate them.--MisterE13 18:25, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Far as I've heard it's not about the fonts the server has installed, but rather the fonts your computer has installed. TTEchidna 18:36, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
That is correct TTE, however we could use 201U.png 201N.png 201O.png 201W.png 201N.png as a template, if someone hadn't given them a ridiculous amount of padding... SavageWolf 19:24, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Contest Opponents

I was wondering if I could create a page for opponents in contests in Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. It would list their Pokemon, their moves, nicknames and ranks. Drake Clawfang 04:00, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Sounds like a good idea, but it'd need a name. TTEchidna 04:11, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
"List of Contest Opponents" sounds reasonable to me. I'm not sure how the Gen IV contests work though, so maybe we'd have to tag it as a Gen III page. Drake Clawfang 06:09, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
Better not have a capital o in there. Title case = FAIL FAIL FAIL, SIR. And Gen IV contests being listed on the same page seems fine. TTEchidna 06:19, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
Lol, alright then. It's a bit late here now, but I'll create the page tomorrow. ^_^ Drake Clawfang 06:34, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Okay, one more question before I do there, is there some sort of table template you want me to use? Because I can make one if it's needed. Drake Clawfang 16:03, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Here, I tried making it myself. It's not as fancy or nice-looking as most of the templates and tables I see it, but it's just a conceptual thing. Drake Clawfang 16:48, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
Pretty much you can go by section headers with the Trainer's name, and then under that use the {{Pokémon}} template... Jasmine's page has how to do it for Gen IV contests, Gen III contests are pretty much the same only you have jam ratings for each move as well. TTEchidna 16:56, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
Alright then, I'll get working. Thanks for the advice! Drake Clawfang 17:04, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Okay, one final problem. I've got the template mostly done, it's in the sandbox. The problem is that when I previewed what it would look like in usage, the "Jam" hearts always have a "2" before the number of hearts. Like, Here. I'm not sure how to get rid of that. Drake Clawfang 17:18, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

fffff I screwed up. I'll fix it. TTEchidna 17:19, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
Also, don't just copy the template's code... it already existssssss. TTEchidna 17:22, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
So, you want me to make the template from scratch then? Drake Clawfang 17:24, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
Oooooh, the Gen 3 contest template already existed....heh heh, I copied the Gen 4 template and modified it to create that. Alright, that's it, I'll make the page. Thanks again. Drake Clawfang 17:26, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
If the template didn't exist, I'd've not asked you to use one. TTEchidna 17:29, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
Well I'd thought you wanted me to make one myself. No harm no foul though. Drake Clawfang 17:31, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
Either way it would've ended up as a subtemplate to the base one. TTEchidna 17:33, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Done. Drake Clawfang 20:31, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Fail at the Steal-type. Also sprites should probably be RS for the Contests, and DP for the Super Contests. TTEchidna 20:34, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
Zero clue on how to do that. Drake Clawfang 20:36, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
I was thinking though, for the physical length of the page, I know how to organize the page in a semi-table so the templates appear two on each row. It would make the page a lot shorter, if you want. Drake Clawfang 20:37, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
Set the game parameter to Ruby and Sapphire for the RS sprites to appear. Pretty much just version names. And the length isn't much of an issue for the lists... TTEchidna 20:38, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
Aaaand....how do I do that? Drake Clawfang 20:41, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
Like all the rest, game is a parameter. game=Ruby and Sapphire. It's wikicode. TTEchidna 20:42, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Okay, changed the sprites. Ya, I know how to handle WikiCode mostly, but you guys here have like, templates within templates six, seven times over. It's very confusing finding what I have to edit to change what sometimes. >< Drake Clawfang 20:49, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

I tend to keep mine as one template. However I do have many parameters. TTEchidna 21:03, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Move Tutor page

Did you see my move tutor update from earlier, which I was able to expand with the rest of the Move tutor data and upgraded with details I knew beforehand and double checked during my update. But the real reason why I am contacting you if you wish to do you think about dividing it since I want to make it easier for people to know which of the Tutor moves are only available. Using the previous HG/SS template it should be not that difficult to do and it would be similar to how I handled the available Pokemon for the Bug Catching Contest and the Headbutt page. -Tyler53841 05:01, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

Um... like how? TTEchidna 05:39, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
  • Put in my Sandbox, make changes to it if you want but if you give it the go ahead I will move it to the move tutor page. -Tyler53841 06:33, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
Looks pretty good to me. Except the abbreviation is BP, not B.P. And move tutor needn't be capitalized. TTEchidna 07:11, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, made the fixes then moved it to the Move Tutor page. I'm glad also my work from last night also paid off. Seriously I have done over 500 edits since I started working on the Pokéthlon stats. But anyway good night and I hope to find a project to work on to help with HG/SS.-Tyler53841 07:19, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

If lugeia is based on loon is the biggest stretch I have ever seen then you have never seen Tangarows origin. How that thing is at all caveman like is beyond me. Random Chaos Was here 17:44, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

Tangrowth is a caveman. AncientPower, general unkemptness... it's a walking Geico ad. TTEchidna 17:45, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

I still don't get it. Tangaworth = Caveman true Tangaworth = Cousin itt false Random Chaos Was here 23:04, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

Cousin It... well I'd not go for Addams Family references unless they were Ghost or Dark. TTEchidna 23:29, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

Im sorry I just don't see it. Way do we say cave man for that thing?Random Chaos Was here 03:06, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Because of AncientPower! Yanmega's a freaking Meganeura, Mamoswine's a wooly mammoth, and both are ancient things (fitting AncientPower's evolution activation). Tangrowth is a caveman. However Lugia's no freaking swan. TTEchidna 06:22, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

I'm not saying it is Im saying Lugia = Swan makes mre sence than Tangawoeth = Caveman. Random Chaos Was here 14:15, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

And Ho-Oh's a fricking seagull, uh huh. Pokémon usually have one major influence, and considering the use of AncientPower to evolve it, I'm saying Tangy's big one is a caveperson. It's not like Pokémon actually take the form of what they're based on; Lugia looks nothing like Ryūjin. TTEchidna 17:04, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

Didn't know where to ask, so I figured I'd ask here, since you're a coding genius... Noob help?

The big question first is: is there any pages on Bulbapedia that explain how users can trick out their user pages, as well as list all the different templates for tricking it out (like "Current Team" templates, or uploading your own graphics and whatnot?)

The more specific question is: how do you get all the cool stuff in the sidebar like "This user is (a) _________"? Are there templates for it? Can you make your own? One question

My friend was thinking, we have "weaponry in the Pokémon World" and "Transportation". What are your thoughts if we created a "death" one?--Midnight Blue 01:48, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

I don't know if we have that much data on death in the Pokémon world. TTEchidna 05:33, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

PokéWalker Courses Template

Hey TTE, I was just looking around and came across the Noisy Forest page. I was looking at the template and I noticed you can barely tell that the gender signs are barely noticeable. It may just be the screen that I am using currently (not the usual one) so I don't know. Is it bad for you too? Also, could we possibly change the colour scheme? Thanks. –MasterKenobi 21:17, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

The gender symbols tend to look bad with the default font. I'll take a look. TTEchidna 21:27, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks TTE. –MasterKenobi 21:51, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Area suggestion

I was thinking, why not move the PokéWalker areas to the name Name (PokéWalker area), like with all the PMD friend areas tc²₆tc26 12:30, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

I agree. Go for it. TTEchidna 16:41, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Trainer class lists

I started development of a (series of) templates for trainer classes (they're pretty horribly unstandardized now), they're over in my sandbox. The first table is what it should look like when put on a page, and everything under the headings is more or less the different templates. Can you give it a lookover and help get it all ready to be put in the mainspace? Thanks! ←{Berrymaster|Talk|Contrib}→ 19:56, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Hmm... I like it. Think it might get too obnoxious with Green and LeafGreen? Also, roundy? TTEchidna 20:00, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
Roundied out. As for Green, that was a mistake (Red and Blue, not Red and Green). In terms of LeafGreen, if you find that too obnoxious then we can flip the colours (firered table, leafgreen header). ←{Berrymaster|Talk|Contrib}→ 21:09, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
Hrm. Well the border should be the plain gamecolor... I dunno. Set it up as the several subtemplates in your userspace and test it out with each game version, and if it works great, we'll throw it towards the Template space. TTEchidna 22:31, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
Well I've gotten all game version exemplars on my sandbox know. Whenever you're next available you can look it over, and once it gets the TTE stamp of approval it can be mainspaced I guess. ←{Berrymaster|Talk|Contrib}→ 01:40, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

I also made my version, with some help from Berrymaster's. It can be found near the bottom here, but it would be better if you place back the feature in {{ms}} (the one with link=Name (Pokémon)). tc²₆tc26 03:23, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

I honestly don't know why that was taken out... hrm. But that one's pretty cool. I must say, I like it. TTEchidna 05:06, 11 October 2009 (UTC)
Vote of approval for Tc26's... it's mine but much better. (I'll admit that very advanced wiki coding is a bit beyond my abilities). One more thing: Can you make it collapsible like mine? That way when we have dozens of trainers for each game it doesn't extend the page forever. ←{Berrymaster|Talk|Contrib}→ 14:02, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

Just wondering if you would push through with this and the {{ms}} edit. tc²₆tc26 01:32, 17 October 2009 (UTC)

Sure. Prepare it for the move and I'll do it. TTEchidna 01:34, 17 October 2009 (UTC)

Uploading images/media permission?

Can I get permission to upload images to Bulbapedia? What do I need to do to get that ability or permission? - Nick15 23:02, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Archives. That's where the upload file link leads to, that's where you have a linked account (just log in with your BP username and password), that's where you get permission. But don't upload random crap. TTEchidna 00:14, 11 October 2009 (UTC)
Y'know what? I'm a moron. Not that I didn't know to check "Upload file"--I asked the initial question after finding the link-- but it initially didn't let me upload files... because my email wasn't confirmed. [smacks forehead] Annnnnyways, no I don't intend on uploading random junk, only files I think are related to my actions here at Bulbapedia. English font rendering in Japanese Gen IV games

I don't know if these sort of inconsistencies are a problem or not but I've noticed some in the rendering of English fonts in the Japanese versions of the Gen IV games, at least in HGSS. What I mean is that when the player character's name (dunno about the rival's name) is in English, the font is either rendered using the normal Japanese font or using the font for the English and alike versions. This video shows the second occurence while this one here shows the first, which in the circumstances described above, should be the expected behavior. ;-) Pokemon lover 19:15, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

Don't ask me, I'm not the one with his game. However, I do know that traded Pokémon from English/international games use the English font, and those who used rōmaji in a Japanese game use the Japanese rōmaji font. Whatever he did to the game to make it display his name in English text rather than rōmaji is beyond me. TTEchidna 22:04, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
I don't think she hacked the game just for that, even though she used cheats, however with the purpose to activate the Celebi, Spiky-ear Pichu and Arceus events. Can't it just be a bug in the game? Pokemon lover 09:50, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
My game doesn't use the English font unless it's from an English game. Like I said, ask the person who put up the videos. I have no idea myself how they did it. TTEchidna 14:07, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
I contacted her and I'm waiting for an answer. ;-) Let's see what she has to say about this. It's likely that nothing was done and the game was just bugged but I'll wait and see. Pokemon lover 19:25, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
Doubtful. TTEchidna 23:18, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
Ugh, no. She answered my message two days ago but I didn't have the chance to come here.
She said that hadn't noticed it before and at the time she read my message, went and checked the game and her name was rendered using the Japanese rōmaji font. She thinks it's a bug, like I initially expected. Here's a pic. Pokemon lover 09:51, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
We'll have to find someone else with a copy of HGSS who named themselves in rōmaji to verify this, then... TTEchidna 09:53, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
From what I've played of HG (in the emulator, so I can't assume that the circumstances will be the same) as Gold using my surname Torga, I have always found my name being rendered with the Japanese rōmaji font. I haven't played more 'cause I've been very busy lately. Pokemon lover 10:11, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

There's probably data for a shiny notch-eared Pichu in case somebody tries to hack one. ZestyCactus 20:08, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

I thought Nintendo tried to discourage hackers. Since it is technically a wild Pokémon before you meet it, I thought you could get a Shiny one. Also, can you breed it? Kimori Geckarbor Hinoarashi Kimori-Hinoarashi

Well, there's an ???-type Arceus, which pretty much exists for no other reason than to be there in case anybody tries to hack one. Nintendo does discourage hacking, but GF probably decided it was wise to take precautions for it anyways since... well, it's gonna get hacked no matter what. And I sincerly doubt you can breed Notched-ear Pichu because you can't even breed a regular Pichu. :P ZestyCactus 20:21, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

Or maybe there will be a ??? event Arceus. I think that they had to do that because of the way the programming works, because you can't have an all-type Pokémon without all of the types. Kimori Geckarbor Hinoarashi Kimori-Hinoarashi

They probably put the shiny data in just in case (because all others have shiny data, and it's just an alternate form for Pichu, like how Skymin has shiny sprites). As for ??? Arceus, that's probably just in case or a beta thing. TTEchidna 22:36, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

With all this controversy around the Pokédex app for the iPhone and iPod touch, I remembered that I suggested this back in late 2008. Since there's open discussion for a Bulbapedia's own app, I think a mobile version of the site for the above mentioned devices as well others, like Android-powered smartphones, would be much better and it would make the Studio Bebop's app completely useless and obsolete. ;-) And it could be similar to Mobile Wikipedia minus the bugs it may have. =D Pokemon lover 10:10, 17 October 2009 (UTC)

A question regarding Col sprites

I don't know who's the main admin when it comes to sprites, but I believe I can ask this from you.

You know those menu sprites in Colosseum? The ones like these: http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/8775/colmenusprites.png

I could get them all by using AR on an emulated game - the thing is, I don't want to do it (it takes a lot of time to enter the modifier codes) unless I'm absolutely sure they will be added to Bulbapedia Pokémon articles' sprite templates or at least used somewhere. If they are welcome to BP, then say so, specify the preferred filename format, and I'll start ripping them. UltimateSephiroth (about me · chat · edits) 22:13, 17 October 2009 (UTC)

Preferred filename format is of course png. They'll be used, most definitely, but we're gonna redesign the sprite template to do so, so it might be a while before they get used.
The names should be Menu Colo ###.png, and for shinies, Menu Colo ### s.png. TTEchidna 22:21, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
Okay, thanks :p I'm currently looking for a working PAL shiny code - the page I found the 1st slot Pokémon modifiers from does list one, but it seems to be broken. And yeah, I'll remember the transparency :p UltimateSephiroth (about me · chat · edits) 22:51, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
Good. But ideally, since you have an unmentionable you-know-what, really we could just delve into its coding and rip the images (and perhaps the models) themselves. TTEchidna 23:07, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
I had that in mind too, because I tried that already and actually got all the data packs (mostly of the type .fsys) extracted. The thing is, when I used a tool designed for further extracting the data packs into separate files, all I got was a single file (when used for example to Pokémon-named files like "pkx_alligates.fsys", which should have some data for Croconaw) or a bunch of random files (when used for example to "people_archive.fsys") which I can't open with any program I could imagine they could be opened (most of the files did not even have a file format).
So, I can't figure out how I could work with those - if I knew how to, I'd rip them that way. UltimateSephiroth (about me · chat · edits) 23:24, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
Hrm. Well, keep trying... TTEchidna 23:36, 17 October 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, those sprites/static 3d renders (whichever they are) would be worth ripping too.
As for the ripping directly from the screen, I found another AR code for shinies (this is 9 lines, that other was 15). I'll try it tomorrow, now I gotta go to sleep (it's, like, 4am here and I'm still awake O.O) UltimateSephiroth (about me · chat · edits) 01:14, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
I'll send something around the higher-ups. TTEchidna 03:04, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

(indent resetted) Unfortunately that code didn't work either... :( But but, I think I have found my way a bit nearer to the way to rip them from the game files. I looked at the list of files emulator was reading and noticed the poke_face.fsys file. Inside that I have files with the name scheme "faceXXX" with XXX being the ndex number. I still cannot open them directly, but by peeking inside with a hex editor, I can see that all of these files start with the string "LZSS" - and LZSS is a known compression algorithm. I'm 99% sure I could get them opened if I had a tool to decompress LZSS-compressed files; if anyone knows such a tool, please inform me. UltimateSephiroth (about me · chat · edits) 14:46, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Doesn't Filb's Wiki have them all? They wouldn't mind "borrowing" them to us, I guess. We're both part of EP. It'll save us hours of unneeded ripping work. I'd rather rip some more exciting things like Character Faceshots, Ribbons (Colo/XD had them, AFAIK) or maybe even take HQ screens of attack animations. --Maxim 16:11, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
Hm, seems they have them indeed. We could use their versions of box sprites, but their face images (those visible in the menu) are taken from XD. While Colosseum and XD use the same images, the Colosseum frame shows the image a few pixels more (compare Menu Colo 001.png and 001.png); the first is my freshly ripped image from Colosseum while the second is the image from XD, used by PokéWiki. UltimateSephiroth (about me · chat · edits) 16:23, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
Ah, I see it now. Go ahead, then. Is there much to rip from Colosseum/XD other than Pokemon faceshots? --Maxim 16:34, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
If we can lend the PC images (001.png for example), then we don't need to re-rip those... The higher-resolution ribbons would indeed be a nice add, though I don't know yet how to force ribbons on a Pokémon with AR, and I still have no progress on opening the raw files extracted from the ROM. Other things I can think of include the type icons, status screen Poké Balls, Contest Jam/Appeal hearts, the item symbol and other common elements. And of course I'm going to replace all the TV screen photo JPGs I can find with quality PNGs once I come across them. UltimateSephiroth (about me · chat · edits) 16:44, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
Manga-in-a-bottle has also been adding good quality headshots of the Trainers in the games, more could be nice.--MisterE13 17:06, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Compé

Please, stop it. "It ends in the same long vowel sound as Poké" isn't a true reason. It is NOT a "long" vowel. It's an ordinary Japanese E. The "é" in Pokémon is also just an ordinary "E". The only reason that we use the grave accent there is because of trademarked spelling. But it is not standard. There's no standard Japanese romanization scheme which uses grave accents. And there is no long vowel in the word "Compe" because it's コンペ, not コンペー. That é in "Pokémon" is really nothing to go by. Because, at that logic, we would spell é in EVERY Japanese word which has an "e" vowel. As I said, the only reason to spell Pokémon with an é is trademarked spelling. As for Compe Ball, there is no such trademark. Also, it's not a pun on Poké- at all. Why would it be? It's just a shortened word "Competition". Japanese people love shortening English words (like Rimokon for Remote Control, Pasokon for Personal Computer). There's nothing extraordinary in "Compe" and hence no reason that we should spell it with an "é". --Maxim 09:41, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

It's a pun on Poké because it's a ball. Besides, I will bet when the English games come out it'll be the Compé Ball as a pun because of the Poké Ball. But hey, you can keep playing Pockemon for all I care. TTEchidna 09:51, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
You seem to be forgetting that in Japanese version Poké Balls are called MONSTER Balls. So, in Japanese it's not a pun. And whether it'll be spelt with an é in English version - it's just your assumption. Even the main admin shouldn't submit opinions here. --Maxim 09:55, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
I realize that they're Monster Balls in Japan. モンスター. However, considering it's the Bug-Catching Contest why didn't they just use コンテスト? It fits the same as Monster. It's not like they don't know we call them Poké Balls. TTEchidna 10:03, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
They wanted something shorter? Maybe they though that "Contest Ball" isn't catchy enough? They didn't want confusion with Super Contests? I don't know. Even if they are aware of English version, I don't see why would they be making a pun on English names. Really, US isn't the center of the world. I doubt that they care about English versions that much. You're simply assuming things, based on little knowledge about Japanese. "Compe" is just a shortening of the word "Competition", used pretty commonly in Japanese language, and there's no reason to spell it with an "é" (they use this shortening very often, not only in Pokémon context). Also, there is no trademarked spelling like this. Other than your assumptions, there's no reason to spell "Compe" with a grave. --Maxim 10:12, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
There's definitely more reasoning in Compé Ball here. To begin with, TTEchidna brings up several good points that make plenty of sense on their own. But, if that's not enough, take pronunciation into account. Certainly, not all non-Japanese fans will understand how this would be pronounced, just like how saké is spelled with an é, or a really obvious case, Pokémon. Soramimi 10:44, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
Saké with an é? Never heard of that. At your logic, we should spell EVERY Japanese "e" as é. Those are Japanese names, so one should simply know how to pronounce them. Romanization isn't supposed to reflect English pronounciation exactly. There's no reason to spell THIS ONE SPECIFIC word with an "é". TTE's logic is invalid here, you're just defending the main admin. Japanese romanization =/= English pronounciation. At your logic, why aren't we spelling Kotone as Kotoné? --Maxim 10:48, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
Never? It's quite common, actually. And, when used, it is so specifically for a pronunciation guide. And although these are in fact Japanese names, they're being used in an English context. Meaning, anyone that happens to be unaware of the ball's naming origin has the possibility of going about the name wrong. Just as well, this point is further justified by the fact it's not an obviously-Japanese word, such as Kotone is, which could easily lead to confusion without an é. This is when the é character should be used, not for just any Japanese word (of course, excluding words in Japanese specifically meant to represent differently spelled foreign words). Soramimi 11:16, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
Your logic is completely screwed up here. On Bulbapedia we use either Trademarked Spellings, Meaning-based transliterations (for English-Japanese word) or Hepburn Romanization. Meaning-based transliteration means the reflection of the English spelling of the word. There is no é in "Competition", hence "Compe". Pokémon and Poké- is just an unitary, exceptional and TRADEMARKED instance when we use "é". Other than that, we use the three types of transliteration that I mentioned. "Compé" is neither of them. We're not a pronounciation guide. Your logic that "Kotone is a Japanese word" DOESN'T WORK HERE. Kotone or Takeshi is even more likely to be misread. The connection between Compe and Competition is much more obvious, I caught it immediately. Really, we're not a Japanese learning site. If someone knows Japanese, he'll know how to pronounce that. There's no reason to write an "é" in that word 'cause we'd have to put that "é" into dozens of different names. We don't have a reason to. I don't see why should we worry about "someone who won't be able to read it properly". It's a common problem in the fandom. --Maxim 11:32, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
Regardless of my opinion on the matter, you guys are grinding water. It's simply not important. It's only romanization. We'll get an English name soon anyway and then we'll have to change it all. --electAbuzzzz 11:30, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

HGSS English Release Date

ohk i have recently been on gamestop.com and it states that preorders of Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver ship on 4/1/10(april 1st). i haven't seen anyone report on this though. I'm just wondering if this is true.--Diakia 12:49, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

They put a date as a placeholder. Until that date is confirmed by Nintendo, we're not going with it. TTEchidna 23:43, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Proposal

I think the main character articles (i.e. Ash, Misty, Dawn, Brock) should be semi-protected (only established users can edit) permanently. Even though there aren't as many rowdy users as there were in the past and users COULD sign up and wait 3 days before destorying the pages, I think it'd be most effective for Bulbapedia's benefit. ht14 00:29, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

I kinda agree. It's not like there aren't people around the interwebs going like "OH NOEZ, ASH IS GAY!", "DAWNZ GOOD FOR PERVS AND PEDOS!" and any sort of childish and stupid crap you can come up against. And because I once saw something like this on Pikachu's article at Wikipedia, I don't want to see it here. And yes, I know we are Bulbapedia but it doesn't mean we can cover all corners 100%. ;-) Pokemon lover 10:01, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
But everyone knows Dawn's JB and May's got a huge rack. Plus it's kinda fun at times to see what morons add to those pages. I'll discuss with the others, but I assume they'll join their sentiments (I do too, but you know... process). - unsigned comment from TTEchidna (talkcontribs)

Forgive my ignorance but what does JB mean? And I know how well designed they are, you don't need to remind me of that. =P About the douchebags that come here to spam articles, I agree that some add hilarious stuff but they still need to GTFO. Pokemon lover 10:18, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
Okay she's a little more than just JB. Paul's Ursaring, I'd say, would go for her more than Paul himself. TTEchidna 17:29, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Friend request

Can ya be a friend on Bulbapedia?I have asked on the forum,and yaour`e one?Please?The Aura Wolf ! 01:06, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

First off 'Wolf, Bulbapedia doesn't have a friend system; not like on the forums. Since the 'pedia is all about documenting Pokémon, rather than hanging out, there's no "friend request" system, and user-made friendlists are discouraged.
...besides, TTE doesn't really like... people. He much prefers coding and cold, robotic programs. -- Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 02:09, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

I'm really confused, on the DP151 page you made this edit. I'm confused though, when I created the page I put the same thing, but it wasn't working. Any idea why? --HoennMaster 15:32, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

Elixer/Max Elixer sprites?

Not sure if you're the one to contact about this, but I think the Elixer sprites are swapped... or at least that's how it appeared as I was going through my bag in HG. :X 梅子 19:00, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Your correct. They are switched. Just change them. might cause problems down the road, but right its fine Never Give Up Pika 19:09, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
I haven't familiarized myself much with how to use the archives yet, so do I just reupload the sprites with their filenames switched, or is there a way to directly change the filenames without having to reupload? 梅子 19:13, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
Yeah. Upload a new version of the files, the correct versions, make sure they're 24×24px. Just save from the Archives to do it. TTEchidna 22:07, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
Done. \o/ 梅子 22:39, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
Not quite... the labels are wrong... you could go to archives and request move. I'll do that. ht14 22:44, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
...What did I do wrong? I'm not seeing it, and I'd like to know so I don't make the same mistake again. :D;; 梅子 22:53, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Can I ask a favor?

I was told by Shiningpikablu252 to contact a sysop about this, and I'm guessing that you would be the best person to contact since you are listed as their sponsor. Basically, Shiningpikablu252 copied information directly from serebii.net into the template "Template:PokéWalker" without checking it and now it turns out that there is an error. Upon request of the change, Shiningpikablu252 refuses to change it because they believe that serebii.net is correct. Honestly, it would be more correct and effective to separate the courses by pre-national dex, post-national dex and special courses, but right now we have it as Kanto/Johto/Hoenn/Sinnoh/Unknown courses. The official website clearly classifies "Beyond the Sea" as a special course. The official guide book that lists all courses pre & post national dex leave out "Beyond the Sea" completely insinuating that it is a special course. I really do not like how the word of serebii.net is getting precedence over that of the official website and the official guides here, but there is nothing I can do about that especially since the template is locked. Would it be possible at all for you to change the listing of "Beyond the Sea" to the first place in the "Unknown" row instead of where it is now in the "Sinnoh" courses? That would at least be semi-accurate grouping. I really think it would be a lot better to just drop the serebii.net made-up version of Kanto/Johto/Hoenn/Sinnoh and replace it with pre/post national dex and then special, but that isn't bothering me as much. Thank you so much. (Yaminokame 04:39, 23 October 2009 (UTC))

Considering that the pre/post-Ndex is the better division (as it really goes by watts, restricting you only if you gain enough before Ndex, anyway), it seems like a good idea. Go ahead and edit the template; Hoenn Field and Sinnoh Field are the only areas which are concretely in a region. Especially since some, like {Volcano Route have non-Hdex Pokémon despite being listed in Hoenn, while the Cold Mountainpath and others have non-Sdex ones despite "being" in Sinnoh. TTEchidna 04:46, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, I would have edited it myself, but Shiningpikablu252 has it locked (I actually attempted to create a new, more up-to-date one, but it was deleted) How do I get around the lock to update it? (Yaminokame 04:53, 23 October 2009 (UTC))
Just update it in your sandbox and then put the code on the talk page for it to be copied over. TTEchidna 06:25, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, I'm really new here :( Where can I get to my sandbox? (I don't know what that is) I have finally figured out what the talk pages are and how they work, but have never heard of a sandbox :/ (Yaminokame 06:37, 23 October 2009 (UTC))
You're one of the good ones. Most by now will have edited their userpage at least 300 times and been banned from the userspace, and you haven't even created yours.
Your sandbox is in your userspace, at User:Yaminokame/Sandbox, a subpage of your userpage. You could also make a new section on the regular sandbox, which everyone can fool around in, if you don't want to make a new page (sandbox and pre-template edits are usually allowed within reason without breaking the userspace rules, meaning don't do 1000 edits of it in a day). TTEchidna 07:04, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
Okay, I added it in, thanks for all the help :) (I think I got the sandbox thing right) (Yaminokame 06:56, 23 October 2009 (UTC))

TR Executives

I think we should clearly state that the Executives in HGSS are the same people as GSC's ones. It's obvious and undeniable for Athena and Apollo. But it's also strongly implied that Lambda and Lance appeared in GSC too. The problem was, that Executives in GSC were nameless and all used one sprite. But it's obvious that there were three different Male Executives in GSC (this detail was easy to miss, though) and Lambda & Lance take their roles. I've brought that topic to the forums but its main purpose was to be approved to put it to Bulbapedia. I've brought all my points why HGSS Executives should be considered as old characters from GSC (they're canonically the same). My desire is to acknowledge this fact and put their GSC teams on their respective articles. I hope that you agree with me. Ah, and please ignore the off-topic flamewar that had arisen later. --Maxim 12:07, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

Truly, though, they weren't even thought of as their Gen IV forms in Gen II. They were just that, nameless Rocket Execs. They only got the treatment they did in Gen IV because of Galactic. They're the same Trainers as much as the Trainers with names in FRLG are the same Trainers as the ones in RG. So you're right as far as I'm concerned, just make sure to mention that they weren't even thought of in Gen II. TTEchidna 22:56, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

Request adding fansite

I would like to add a fansite wiki page and I guess I need approval. It is http://www.pokemonsecure.com. It has a lot of Pokemon event information and is apparently good enough to be linked to by staff at Neoseeker.com, PokeCommunity.com, and Serebii.net. - unsigned comment from Yankeesrule3526 (talkcontribs)

Hmmm, how old is this site?--ForceFire 01:54, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Technically speaking 2 years old in January. It is kind of spin off of a site from July 2007 though so it is really over 2 years. - unsigned comment from Yankeesrule3526 (talkcontribs)

Well I must say I like the design. I dunno, give us your listings in Alexa and the like, as I notice that you're the guy in charge... usually we allow it after fans of the site do it, rather than the people behind it. TTEchidna 05:04, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Hey

Hey TTE, The Steelix article has a mess-up with the sprites section. Under the 4th Gen part it's all doubled up. I can't fix the mistake because I'm not an editor. But I figured you should go check it out and fix it up.

Thanks Dude. --TheLastCharmander 05:31, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Um, what do you mean? That's normal. Notice the gender differences. Male Steelix have two jaw spikes, females have one. TTEchidna 05:33, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Quick HG/SS Q

Hi, I was just wondering about a HG/SS question:

  • # Can you get all those rare non-Johto Dex critters (Bagon, Gible, Seviper, etc.) before beating the Elite Four? Thanks! LugiaPwns 05:39, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
In what manner? You can trade them in from DPPt as soon as you have the Pokédex and at least one other Pokémon. I did that. It's how I got EastSideYo. Kanto also has several wild Pokémon that aren't in the Jdex, though you need to get the Ndex to go anywhere beyond the path to the Indigo Plateau. The Hoenn Sound and Sinnoh Sound that play on Wednesdays and Thursdays don't play until you have the National Dex. And it's Seviper. TTEchidna 05:43, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, I was very unclear - I meant in the Safari Zone, my bad. LugiaPwns 05:50, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
Far as I know, like all other post-Ndex stuff, they're unavailable. I didn't see one and spent FOREVER in there. TTEchidna 05:54, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
I highly doubt that they are there, I just hope that they are super-rare pre-e4 but common post-e4. We'll wait for confirmation. Thanks. Also - one last Q: Can Sneasel/Gligar evolve leveling up w/ their items pre-e4? LugiaPwns 06:04, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
Maye not. High chance that the items aren't obtainable after the N.Dex.--ForceFire 06:24, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. LugiaPwns 06:33, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
Neither Weavile nor Gliscor are in the Jdex, unlike Ambipom, Yanmega, Tangrowth, Mamoswine, and Lickilicky. Their items are only available post-Ndex at the Battle Frontier (and probably elsewhere as one-offs) or by trading in from DPPt. TTEchidna 06:36, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, TTE. LugiaPwns 06:42, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

I killed your Ho-Oh....

Sorry for interupting your template test, But you're a nice guy and don't expect you to growl at me. so umm, I made a new template for Fan sites, and was wondering on your opinion on it annd what else I could add, thanks for your time. and I will get you a new Ho-Oh.--ForceFire 08:58, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
