Goldenrod City

Goldenrod City

Welcome to Goldenrod, the largest metropolis in Johto and sister city to Saffron in Kanto. This sprawling city boasts a handful of major attractions, including a Pokémon Gym, Bike Shop, Game Corner, Radio Tower, and Department Store. With so much going on, it's easy to get distracted and overlook any shady events. But with a Team Rocket grunt keeping tabs on the Radio Tower, expect to return here to save the city from the Rockets' underhanded schemes.
But first thing's first: let's see the sights!

Bike Shop

The Bike Shop has moved to the city's southeast neighborhood from Cerulean City in Kanto, but business doesn't seem to be doing very well. The owner has an idea - he'll loan you a Bicycle, and since you're traveling so much the advertising will increase interest, and business will pick up. Riding the bike is faster than traveling on foot, and he gains new customers - everybody's happy!

Game Corner

Unlike Celadon's Game Corner, this one is not hiding a secret entrance to a Rocket underground base. Unfortunately, the games are off-limits without a Coin Case, so Trainers who want to try their luck will have to track one down. Leave the Game Corner and walk southwest, and enter the building with the "Underground Entrance" sign.

Goldenrod Underground

The Underground is a tunnel stretching north/south under the western part of the city, with a small access hallway leading to the basement of the Department Store. Just beyond the first two Trainers, the underground hallway widens, allowing more room for the three shops here. Examine the item around the corner from the second Trainer to find a Coin Case. With a new Coin Case, Trainers are free to purchase coins at the Game Corner; 50 coins for $1000, 500 coins for $10000.

• The northern shop is only open on Monday mornings, 4am - 9am. This merchant deals in valuable items, while having no use themselves, they can be resold elsewhere for decent profit. Trainers with money to spare may want to shop here; buying a few of these items will keep them from losing much money if an entire team faints in battle.

• The Pokémon Salon, the center shop, is operated by two brothers. Their services will raise a Pokémon's happiness, though at different rates. The younger brother works on Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday, and charges $300; the older brother works on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday and charges $500. Neither brother works on a Monday.

• The Herb Shop, the southern-most shop, sells medicinal herbs that heal or revive Pokémon and are cheaper than their Poké Mart counterparts. The downside to this is that Pokémon do not enjoy having these herbal items used on them, so their happiness rating will decrease as a result. This shop is only open on weekends.

Bill's house

Bill, the inventor of the Pokémon PC Storage system, lives on the city's western coast with his mother and sister. He is currently away on business in Ecruteak City, but his sister will give his phone number out to visiting Trainers. This is a useful way to check how many Pokémon are stored in the current box. After meeting him in Ecruteak, he returns home to Goldenrod. Stop by his house afterwards and he will give you a gift.

Name Rater

The Name Rater lives in the house to the west of the Goldenrod Gym. Like his counterpart in Lavender Town, the Name Rater evaluates a Pokémon's nickname, and allows Trainers to think up new nicknames for them.

Mood Tester

There are certain Pokémon, like Espeon and Umbreon, that can only be acquired when a Pokémon is happy with its Trainer. The woman in the house near the Bike Shop will evaluate the happiness rating of a Trainer's first Pokémon. There are many things that a Trainer can do in order to raise a Pokémon's happiness, like grooming it or using vitamins on it.

Radio Tower

Step inside the Radio Tower by the train station. The man behind the counter allows Trainers to draw a lottery ticket, and hands out prizes if any numbers match the Trainer's ID number. Trainers that speak with the green-haired woman behind the counter will be asked to participate in a quiz, with a Radio Card for the Pokégear as a prize.
There are three radio stations that Trainers can tune into:

• 4.5 - Oak's Pokémon Talk

Professor Oak, with commentary by DJ Mary, gives Trainers tips on where they can find different Pokémon species.

• 7.5 - Pokémon Music

Hosted by DJ Ben, this channel broadcasts two different pieces of music (depending on the day of the week) that affect how often wild Pokémon will appear.

1. Pokémon March - played on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, this upbeat music increases the encounter rate when played.
2. Pokémon Lullaby - played on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, this soothing music calms nearby wild Pokémon, decreasing the encounter rate when played.

• 8.5 - Lucky Channel

Hosted by DJ Reed, this show broadcasts a random OT number, and if any of a Trainer's Pokémon match that number, they can show it to the man on the Radio Tower's ground floor to receive a Master Ball. The lottery number changes every Friday.

Magnet Train Station

Next to the Radio Tower is the Magnet Train Station. Currently shut down, this bullet train normally runs between Johto's Goldenrod and Kanto's Saffron twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. This is the quickest way to travel from one region to the other, since the only other method (boarding the S.S. Aqua in Olivine City and sailing to Vermilion City) runs much less frequently, making the Magnet Train the ideal method of transportation.

Goldenrod Dept. Store

Located just east of the Poké Center, the Goldenrod Department Store is the largest shop in Johto (eight floors counting the rooftop and basement), and has a wide array of items on sale.

Basement

While there are no shops in the basement, taking the elevator downstairs will allow Trainers to find an Ultra Ball, a Burn Heal, and an Ether lying around.

2nd floor

The "Trainer's Market" sells basic equipment and items that Trainers may need during their journeys.

3rd floor

The "Battle Connection" sells temporary stat-enhancing items.

5th floor

The "TM Corner" located on the fifth floor offers a handful of different TMs for Trainers to use.
On Sundays, there is a second shopkeeper working here, and she will give Trainers TM27 (Return) if their lead Pokémon is happy, and TM21 (Frustration) if it is unhappy. Speaking with the little girl here unlocks the Mystery Gift option. There is also a man here who is willing to trade his Drowzee for a Machop. It is a good idea to trade, since the Goldenrod Gym is devoted to Normal-types. TM02 is only up for sale after it is acquired in Ilex Forest. TM08 is only up for sale after acquired on Route 36.

6th floor

Like at the Celadon Department Store, the "Rooftop Square" houses vending machines that dispense drinks that heal a Pokémon's health.

With so many supplies at their disposal, Trainers should have little trouble at the Goldenrod Gym.

Goldenrod Gym

The Goldenrod Gym is devoted to Normal-types. Trainers would be wise to have traded for the Machop in the Dept Store, since Fighting-types are the only type to get a power bonus when battling Normal-types.

After defeating her, Whitney sobs uncontrollably, ignoring her victorious opponent altogether. Unable to receive the Plain Badge, frustrated Trainers turn to leave when Lass Bridget stops them. She speaks to Whitney, and the Gym Leader finally gives up the Plain Badge (which gives a Speed boost to a Trainer's Pokémon), TM45 (Attract), and the ability to use Strength outside of battle.

Goldenrod Flower Shop

After defeating Whitney, stop by the flower shop just east of the Gym. The two women inside talk about an odd moving tree on Route 36 that actually squirms around to avoid contact with water. An oddity, but Trainers with three badges should have no trouble approaching it. One woman gives a Squirtbottle to any Trainer interested in seeing it for themselves.
