First, make sure to visit the Pokémon Center to heal up from the trek through the forest. The two houses here don't hold anything important, but the Poké Mart does!  This is the first city to sell Potions, so make sure to buy a few for the upcoming Gym battle. Trainers won't be able to head east yet, since the kid at the edge of the city will drag them to the Gym if they try to leave. There isn't much else to do right now, so get ready for your first upcoming Gym battle!
Pewter City is a quiet city nestled in the northern mountains. Local attractions include the Pewter Museum of Science and the Pewter Gym. The Gym Leader is looking for challengers, and the kid blocking the city's east exit will drag to the Gym if tries to leave. This is the first city to sell Potions, so stock up at the Poké Mart before challenging the Gym.

Pewter Museum of Science
The Pewter Museum of Science is located on the north side of the city. It hosts a wide range of artifacts and exhibits, with a focus on fossil excavation and space exploration. Admission to the main building is pdollar50 for a child's ticket. The laboratory next door is closed to the public, but return later to receive a valuable item from one of the scientists inside.

Admission to the main building is PDollar50 for a child's ticket. The second smaller building is closed to the public, but if Trainers return later and cut past the tree, the lead scientist there will give you the Old Amber; take it to Cinnabar Island, and the scientists there can resurrect an ancient Aerodactyl.

The Pewter Gym focuses on the Rock, so Trainers that chose Bulbasaur or Squirtle will be in good shape. Teams with Charmander may have some trouble here, since Fires can't do much damage against Rock-types. Trainers with Charmander would be well-advised to bring a Mankey from 22 or Butterfree with Confusion, since Fighting moves are super-effective against the Rock-type and Brock's Pokémon have poor Special Defenses. Teaching Metal Claw to Charmander can help, but try not to be too dependent on it, especially since the Sandshrew that the Gym Trainer has is a Ground type, which is not weak to Fighting or Steel, and Ground is super-effective against Fire. Bring a few Potions, and enter the first Gym. If possible, try to use special attacks like Bubble, Vine Whip, or Confusion instead of physical attacks, as Brock's Geodude and Onix have very high Defense stats and very low Special Defense stats.
The Pewter Gym officially specializes in the Rock type. Bulbasaur's Vine Whip and Squirtle's Water Gun can inflict serious damage on each of the four opposing Pokémon. Despite being a Fire type, Charmander can still hold its own with Metal Claw. Alternatively, a Mankey from 22 or a Butterfree from Viridian Forest can be a big help, as Rock Pokémon are vulnerable to Fighting moves, and the Gym's Pokémon have a difficult time against special attacks like Confusion. Avoid bringing Flying and Electric Pokémon.

Congratulations, you've just won the Boulder!  The Badge gives a slight attack boost during battle, and also allows the use of Flash outside of battle (once a Trainer has obtained HM05).
Brock awards the Boulder, which gives a slight Attack boost during battle, and allows the use of Flash in the field. He also hands over 39 as a prize.

Brock also gives out 39 as a prize. With the first Gym behind them, a Trainer's next destination is Cerulean City to the east. Stock up on Poké Balls and Potions before leaving for 3, then it's off to the wilderness again!
With the Pewter Gym defeated, the next stop is Cerulean City to the east. Stock up on Potions and Pokés before leaving for 3.

When the player first leaves Pewter City to head east, one of Oak's aides stops them, and delivers the List of key items in Generation III from Mom. By holding the <i>B Button</i>, Trainers can travel quicker than they normally could. While still not as fast as the List of key items in Generation III, it's still better than walking.
3 runs off to the east, ending at the entrance to Mt. Moon. There are more than a few Trainers to fight along the way, so it may be necessary to rest up in Pewter City before venturing into the cave.

<br>
Fight past the eight Trainers here, and continue towards Cerulean City.

The next point of interest is the Pokémon Center. There's a bald guy in front of the stairs that will offer Trainers a Magikarp for PDollar500. The fish itself isn't a great Water choice, since it can only splash around until level 15, but with enough training it will evolve into Gyarados at level 20 (with much better stats and moves) which can help with the upcoming Gym match in Cerulean City. It's a Trainer's choice whether to fork over the money for the fish or not, since they are found almost everywhere with the Old Rod later on. Heal up and head into Mt. Moon.
Run Like the Wind
Upon leaving Pewter City, is stopped by one of Oak's aides. He delivers a package from Mom, which turns out to be a pair of III. By holding the B Button, can travel faster than normal. While not as fast as the III, it is still better than walking.

Mt. Moon
The Magikarp Salesman
Mt. Moon isn't a very tough cave to get through, especially if a Trainer's team is around level 15 by now. There is also a handful of new cave-dwelling Pokémon for novice Trainers to find. It is advisable to carry ample amounts of supplies such as Repels or Escape Ropes if a Trainer's team is low on health.
A Pokémon Center stands near the entrance to Mt. Moon. Inside is a shady man that offers to sell a Magikarp for pdollar500. The fish can do nothing but Splash until level 15, but evolves into the much-stronger Gyarados at level 20. This offer allows to obtain the powerful sea snake earlier than normal, but Magikarp can soon be hooked for free with the right fishing rod.

Mt. Moon is a large cave set deep inside the mountains. There are many Trainers inside who are looking to battle. Many cave-dwelling Pokémon, like Zubat and Paras, can also be found here.

As you pass through B1F, you will notice that the only wild Pokémon here is Paras. This is a good training ground for Pokémon who have a move Paras is weak against, but be aware of its Effect Spore Ability, which has a chance of causing a status condition from a physical contact move.
When you reach B2F, look out for the Team Rocket grunt here - his presence here means that the criminal gang is up to no good somewhere nearby. Grab the Valuable item from the ledge, and take the stairs back to the first floor.

Continue along the tunnel to the northwest corner of the cave. Grab the Moon Stone in the corner and take the ladder to the basement.

Walk north to pick up a Revive, and then follow the winding tunnel clockwise to the west, where another Rocket grunt is muttering about the team stealing Fossils for profit. Beyond him is a Super Nerd that claims both the nearby Fossils as his own. After beating him, he compromises, offering Trainers a choice between the two ancient relics. Like the Old Amber in Pewter City, there is enough preserved genetic material for the scientists on Cinnabar Island to revive a prehistoric Pokémon. The Dome Fossil becomes a Kabuto, while the Helix Fossil turns into an Omanyte; both become -types. Since it's only possible to obtain one, players will need to trade to receive the other. Head to the southwest, pick up the Status ailment healing item, and take the stairs to the exit.
B2F (outer area)
Follow the winding tunnel to the northwest, where Super Nerd Miguel claims both fossils lying here as his own. Defeat him, and he lets take pick of the two. Like with the Old Amber, the scientists on Cinnabar Island can resurrect a prehistoric Pokémon from each fossil. The Helix Fossil will become an Omanyte, while the Dome Fossil will become a Kabuto; both are Pokémon. Climb the final ladder to reach the exit.

After the trek through Mt. Moon, 4 will seem like a walk in the park. There are no Trainers here, and only a small patch of grass to the south. There is a pair of Move Tutors on the northwest hill; the left tutor will offer to teach a Pokémon the move Mega Punch, while the tutor on the right would be happy to teach Mega Kick to a Pokémon. Continue east to pick up 05, then head south and jump the ledge into the tall grass (after doing so, Trainers won't be able to backtrack through Mt. Moon). This is a handy location to train before battling Misty. Once the player's team is around level 20-25, the Cerulean Gym shouldn't be much of a problem.

Walk to the east to enter Cerulean City.

Pewter City

Pewter City

Pewter City is a quiet city nestled in the northern mountains. Local attractions include the Pewter Museum of Science and the Pewter Gym. The Gym Leader is looking for challengers, and the kid blocking the city's east exit will drag Leaf to the Gym if she tries to leave.

Admission to the main building is $50 for a child's ticket. The laboratory next door is closed to the public, but return later to receive a valuable item from one of the scientists inside.

Pewter Gym

Pewter Gym

PEWTER CITY POKéMON GYM
LEADER: BROCK

The Rock Solid POKéMON TRAINER!

The Pewter Gym officially specializes in the Rock type. Bulbasaur's Vine Whip and Squirtle's Water Gun can inflict serious damage on each of the four opposing Pokémon. Despite being a Fire type, Charmander can still hold its own with Metal Claw. Alternatively, a Mankey from Route 22 or a Butterfree from Viridian Forest can be a big help, as Rock Pokémon are vulnerable to Fighting-type moves, and the Gym's Pokémon have a difficult time against special attacks like Confusion. Avoid bringing Flying and Electric Pokémon.

Pewter Gym
The Boulder Badge

Brock awards Leaf the Boulder Badge, which gives a slight Attack boost during battle, and allows the use of Flash in the field. He also hands over TM39 (Rock Tomb) as a prize.

With the Pewter Gym defeated, the next stop is Cerulean City to the east. Stock up on Potions and Poké Balls before leaving for Route 3.

Route 3

Route 3

Route 3 runs off to the east, ending at the entrance to Mt. Moon. There are more than a few Trainers to fight along the way, so it may be necessary to rest up in Pewter City before venturing into the cave.

Run Like the Wind

Upon leaving Pewter City, Leaf is stopped by one of Oak's aides. He delivers a package from Mom, which turns out to be a pair of Running Shoes. By holding the B Button, Leaf can travel faster than normal. While not as fast as the Bicycle, it is still better than walking.

The Magikarp Salesman

A Pokémon Center stands near the entrance to Mt. Moon. Inside is a shady man that offers to sell Leaf a Magikarp for $500. The fish can do nothing but Splash until level 15, but evolves into the much-stronger Gyarados at level 20. This offer allows her to obtain the powerful sea snake earlier than normal, but Magikarp can soon be hooked for free with the right fishing rod.

Mt. Moon

Mt. Moon, 1F
Mt. Moon, B1F
Mt. Moon, B2F

Mt. Moon is a large cave set deep inside the mountains. There are many Trainers inside who are looking to battle. Many cave-dwelling Pokémon, like Zubat and Paras, can also be found here.

1F

Collect TM09 (Bullet Seed) and the Parlyz Heal to the west, then follow the tunnel around and climb down the nearest ladder.

B2F (south)

The presence of a Team Rocket Grunt means that the criminal gang is up to no good here. Grab the Star Piece from the platform and take the ladder back to the first floor.

1F

To the south are two more Trainers. There are also three items lying around, including a Potion, a Rare Candy, and an Escape Rope. Go north and climb down the next ladder.

B2F (northeast)

Beat up the second Rocket Grunt, then pick up TM46 (Thief) on the platform. Check the boulder for a hidden Ether and return to the main floor.

1F

Continue along the tunnel to the northwest corner of the cave. Grab the Moon Stone in the corner and take the ladder to the basement.

B2F (outer area)

Follow the winding tunnel to the northwest, where Super Nerd Miguel claims both fossils lying here as his own. Defeat him, and he lets Leaf take her pick of the two. Like with the Old Amber, the scientists on Cinnabar Island can resurrect a prehistoric Pokémon from each fossil. The Helix Fossil will become an Omanyte, while the Dome Fossil will become a Kabuto; both are Rock/Water Pokémon. Climb the final ladder to reach the exit.

Route 4

Route 4
The pair of Move Tutors

Route 4 is a one-way path that leads down from the mountains. Pick up TM05 (Roar) and the hidden Great Ball before jumping the ledge outside Cerulean City.

Move Tutors

A pair of Black Belts can be found training on the western hill. These men are Move Tutors, and each wishes to pass on the knowledge of a certain move. The man on the left teaches Mega Punch, while the man on the right teaches Mega Kick. Like the other Move Tutors, these moves can be taught only once.
