Section 02: The Cascade Badge

Winding mountain trails...

As you try to get onto Route 3, one of Prof. Oak’s Aides will stop you and give to you the Running Shoes. He’ll read the directions on how to use them. When he’s gone you’ll find a letter from your Mom. The Pokémon found in Route 3 are:

Dex # Pokémon Level Rarity
016 016Pidgey 6-7 Common
021 021Spearow 6-8 Common
029 029Nidoran♀ 6 Rare
032 032Nidoran♂ 6 Rare
039 039Jigglypuff 3-7 Rare
056 056Mankey 7 Uncommon

Once on Route 3, you’ll notice a multitude of Trainers aching for a battle with you. Some of them are is possible to avoid, though it is not recommended don’t suggest skipping any battles, while others you will have to battle. The first Trainer you’ll encounter will be a Lass with two Pidgey, defeat her then go to the North to the two trainers and beat them as well. One will be a Bug Catcher with Two Caterpie and one Weedle. The second will be a Youngster with a Rattata and an Ekans. You may need to Heal after those three Trainers so, if you do, go back to the Pokémon Center in Pewter City to do so before moving on. If you don’t, continue to the East and you’ll come across another Bug Catcher that has a Weedle, Caterpie, Metapod and Kakuna. If you try to go behind him another Lass will challenge you that has a Rattata and a Nidoran♀. Also, there is another Youngster that has a Spearow just off the ledge directly under the Bug Catcher. Defeat the Bug Catcher, the Lass and then the Youngster then make your way back around and continue to the East. Again, you may need to Heal, so go back and do so. If you’re still good, continue to the East and you’ll encounter yet another Bug Catcher that has a Caterpie and a Metapod. Go to the South and then continue East and you find a third Lass as well that has a Jigglypuff. South of the last Lass, there’s a grassy area that you can catch wild Pokémon in.

Once you are past all of those trainers it is pretty much smooth sailing until you get to Mt. Moon. Simply continue to the East until you reach another grassy area and then proceed to the North and you’ll come to a Pokémon Center and a Cave Entrance. It would be a good idea to Heal, even if you don’t really need it too much, before continuing on.

Mt. Moon

Once you’ve healed, go into the cave to the East of the Pokémon Center and you’ll see a first person view of Mt. Moon. The Pokémon found in Mt. Moon are:

Dex # Pokémon Level Rarity
035 035Clefairy 7-11 Rare
041 041Zubat 7-11 Common
046 046Paras 7-11 Rare
074 074Geodude 7-11 Common

Once inside Mt. Moon, you’ll see a Poké Ball to your left on the other side of a wall. Go up a bit and around the wall and retrieve the Poké Ball, which contains TM09 Bullet Seed. Continue to the left and then go up when you get to another wall. You’ll find another Poké Ball that contains a Paralyze Heal. Go back down and now battle the Bug Catcher that’s just right there. Keep going to the right and a Lass will challenge you near the Entrance to Mt. Moon. Go passed her and then up as you’ll reach a wall and you’ll see a ladder leading down to a lower level, so take it. Follow the path the only way that you can and you’ll come to another ladder leading down. Down the ladder you’ll immediately see a Team Rocket Grunt near the top of the screen and just to the right of the ladder. You can avoid him by going down as far as you can and then to the right. There’s a Poké Ball on a raised section on the right that contains a Star Piece that you can sell later for some money. Go back to the left and battle the Rocket Grunt and then go up the ladder. Follow the path again and go up ladder at the end. From the ladder, go down as far as you can and you’ll see a Super Nerd and a Poké Ball that contains a Potion. Go past the Super Nerd at the bottom and you’ll find another Poké Ball. This one has a Rare Candy. From there, go up and you’ll see a Bug Catcher. You can avoid him if you want but I say battle him. Go past him as far right as you can and you’ll find a Poké Ball with an Escape Rope inside. If you need to Heal by now, use the Escape Rope and it’ll set you just outside Mt. Moon’s entrance. Keep going up and you’ll see a man that’s looking for Fossils. He’ll tell you that Brock sometimes helps him excavate. Go to the left from him and you’ll see a Lass running around in circles; battle her, and continue past. After this, find a ladder that leads to a large area with a section curling around another room. You will battle a Rocket Grunt. After passing through a gap in a wall, you will come to a room revealing a Super Nerd and two fossils. After defeating him, you will be able to choose one fossil and continue before emerging in Route 4. A hidden Moon Stone can also be found here.

Route 4

In Route 4, one can catch the following Pokémon:

Dex # Pokémon Level Rarity
035 019Rattata 7-11 Rare
041 021Spearow 7-11 Common
046 023Ekans 7-11 Rare
074 027Sandshrew 7-11 Common

A TM05 is also available. There are two move tutors, one teaching Mega Punch and one Mega Kick. After coming along here you reach Cerulean City.

Cerulean City

After a long walk in the wilderness, you have finally arrived in civilization. This is Cerulean City, home of the second Gym. Heal your Pokémon and stock up on items. First, go north to the "Nugget Bridge". Your rival, Gary, will be waiting for you. He has the following Pokemon: lv. 17 Pidgeotto, lv. 15 Rattata, lv. 15 Abra, and lv. 18 of his starter Pokemon. This should be a much more challenging match than the last one. A Pikachu (can be caught in Viridian Forest) would help out a lot if you chose Charmander as your starter. This is because both Pidgeotto and Squirtle, the toughest Pokemon on Gary's team, are weak to Pikachu's attacks.

After one real tough battle, Gary will give you a Key Item known as the Fame Checker. This is used to identify trainers whom you've previously battled. Go back to town now and heal your Pokemon, and continue traveling on the Nugget Bridge.

Route 24

There are six trainers on Nugget Bridge that you must fight to get past. The sixth trainer is actually a member a Team Rocket. When beaten, he'll give you a {[DL|Valuable item|Nugget}} that you can sell for $5,000. At the end of the route, you'll find a TM45. If you do feel like battling, then challenge the trainer in the grassy area. Otherwise, go on to Route 25.

Route 25

Bill as a Clefairy in the Sea Cottage

There are many trainers waiting to battle you on Route 25. Behind one trainer, you will find TM43. But that isn't the main reason you've come upon this route. You want to meet a scientist named Bill. Go all the way to the end of Route 25, and you'll arrive at a house called Sea Cottage. Go inside, and you'll see a Clefairy. It turns out that something went wrong with Bill's experiment, and the Clefairy is actually him. Talk to him, and he'll go inside his machine. Press "A" against his computer, and he'll be transported to the other end of the machine. Finally, he'll come out as Bill, a human scientist. Talk to him again, and he'll give you a S.S. Ticket for the S.S. Anne in Vermilion City. Now that that's taken care of, go back to Cerulean City and challenge the Gym Leader!

Cerulean City (again)

At Misty's Gym

Cerulean City is the city of water. So, Water Pokémon are what the trainers in the Gym use. There are two trainers in the Gym, but you must battle only one before battling the Gym Leader - Misty. However, battling both trainers is recommended.

Gym-Leader Misty

Misty uses a lv. 18 Staryu and a lv. 21 Starmie on you. A strong Wartortle or Ivysaur may easily defeat her while the situation is certainly not very encouraging for a Charmeleon.

Gym Leader Misty would like to battle!

Gym Leader Misty sent out...

After being beaten, Misty'll give you a TM03 and the Cascade Badge.

Now you can leave Cerulean City by going to the house with a policeman outside in the north-eastern section of the city.
