Route 32 (North)
{| class="expandable" align="center" style="background: #; roundy; border: 5px solid #;"
The Berry tree at the northern end of 32 holds a Berry.  Trainers on their way to Azalea Town may be interested in exploring the Ruins of Alph to the west, but without 03 and 04, only the first room is accessible.

Ruins of Alph
Since you can't surf to across the southern pond yet, the only cave you can reach is in the north.  Read the hint to the right of the carving for a clue: "".  When you complete the puzzle, the floor beneath you will give way, dropping you into the main underground chamber.  With the first puzzle complete, you can now find Unown forms A-K.  If you catch at least three different forms, one of the scientists investigating the ruins will be waiting for you near the exit.  He'll take you to the research building and upgrade your Pokédex so that it can record the various forms of the Unown.

Return here after obtaining HM03, because not only are you able to solve the three remaining puzzles (unlocking the rest of the Unown), but also some wild Pokémon around the area.  This is notably the only place to find Natu and Smeargle.

Route 32 (South)
Talk to the first guy you see and you'll get a Type-enhancing item, a held item that enhances Grass attacks, as a souvenir for defeating the Violet Gym.  The guy standing on the ledge will give you 05, but you can't reach him until you can Cut your way through the trees. There's a Repel sitting in the tall grass by Picnicker Liz. Near the center of the route the path opens to a small inlet, forcing Trainers to either follow the western shoreline, or take the pier over the water. Whichever way you go, don't pass up the Poké Ball on the shore!
Ruins of Alph
The grounds where the Ruins of Alph are located can be reached from 32 to the east and 36 to the north. There are four interior chambers. Each chamber holds a puzzle in which tiles must be arranged to show the image of a specific Pokémon species. Completing each puzzle causes a series of Unown forms to begin appearing in the large hall beneath the complex. The mysterious Pokémon species appears in List of Pokémon with form differences that all resemble letters of the alphabet.

The two paths converge again, meeting up just north of the Poké Center. Like 4 in Kanto, this route also has an opportunity to rest your team before tackling the nearby cave.  Before you can reach it, you are stopped by a shady man and offered a "tasy, nutritious SLOWPOKETAIL" for pdollar1,000,000.  An obvious scam, but Slowpoke tails for sale?!  Team Rocket must be getting desperate.  Check out the tree-lined path behind the Poké Center, and you'll find a hidden Poké Ball.  Talk to the fisherman inside the building, and he'll give you the Fishing; with this you can reel in some Magikarp and Tentacool.  Rest up, and when your team's ready, enter the Union Cave.
Each chamber also features a message in Unown script on the rear wall. Deciphering this message and using the correct item or field move reveals a doorway to hidden room filled with items.

North chamber
Potion
The north chamber is the only one accessible at first. Examine the text on the rear wall to find a single word: ESCAPE. Using an Escape Rope here will return you to the entrance while also revealing a hidden doorway. The room behind holds a Berry, PSNCureBerry, Heal Powder, and an EnergyPowder. Dropping down through the hole at the back wall leads to a hidden room above the underground hall, where a message in Unown script can be found on the floor:<br><center>OUR WORDS SHALL REMAIN HERE FOR THE AGES</center>
Repel

Itlistfoot
In the entry room, a bit of text beside the puzzle hints at the Pokémon's identity. Move the tiles to their proper place to reveal the Pokémon's image and complete the puzzle. Doing so causes the floor to fall away, dropping you into the underground hall where the first eleven forms of Unown have awakened.

Catch at least three different forms, and a Scientist investigating the ruins will approach you upon exiting the hall. He leads you to a nearby research facility and upgrades your Pokédex with its Unown Mode, allowing it to record the limited data available on each of the Unown forms.

Later...
Return to the Poké Center on a Friday, and Freida, one of the Weekday Siblings, will be waiting behind the building.  She will give you a Type-enhancing item, which enhances Poison attacks when held by a Pokémon.
Southeast chamber
The southeast chamber can be accessed after obtaining 03. Examine the text on the rear wall to find a single word: LIGHT. Using the move Flash here will reveal another hidden doorway. The room behind holds a Heal Powder, Energy Root, Gold Berry, and a Moon Stone. Dropping down through the hole at the back wall leads to a second hidden room above the underground hall, where another message in Unown script can be found on the floor:<br><center>THUS WE SHALL ERECT A POKEMON STATUE OUTSIDE</center>

In the entry room, move the tiles to reveal an image of Aerodactyl, and the floor falls away. Completing this puzzle causes five more Unown forms to appear in the underground hall.

West chamber
The western chamber can only be accessed through Union Cave, after obtaining 03 and 04. Examine the text on the rear wall to find a single word: HOOH. Positioning a Ho-Oh in the first party slot will reveal another hidden doorway. The room behind holds a Stardust, Star Piece, MysteryBerry, and a Mystic Water. Dropping down through the hole at the back wall leads to a third hidden room above the underground hall, where another message in Unown script can be found on the floor:<br><center>WE HUMANS MUST LEARN TO WALK IN HARMONY WITH THEM<br>WE DEPART FOR THEIR SAKES</center>

In the entry room, move the tiles to reveal an image of Ho-Oh, and the floor falls away. Completing this puzzle causes three more Unown forms to appear.

Union Cave
Southwest chamber
The southwest chamber can only be accessed through Union Cave, after obtaining 03. Examine the text on the rear wall to find a single word: WATER. Attempting to use a Water Stone here will reveal another hidden doorway. The room behind holds a Revival Herb, Charcoal, Gold Berry, and a MysteryBerry. Dropping down through the hole at the back wall leads to a fourth hidden room above the underground hall, where a final message in Unown script can be found on the floor:<br><center>THEY POSSESS GREAT INSIGHT AND REFUSE THE OUTSIDE WORLD</center>

Head west from the entrance to find an Battle item.  Battle the next two Trainers, and pick up the Poké Ball south of the Firebreather.  Grab the Potion to the west, and continue south.  If you take the stairs down past the PokéManiac, you can find an Battle item and 39.  There is an Status ailment healing item just before the exit, and another Firebreather loitering around. <br><br> Stepping out of the cave puts you on 33.
In the entry room, move the tiles to reveal an image of Omanyte, and the floor falls away. Completing this puzzle causes the final seven Unown forms to appear.

{| class="expandable" align="center" style="background: #crystal color; border: 5px solid #crystal color light; roundy"
Unown's encounter rate is divided among all unlocked forms. Once all forms have been unlocked, most will have an encounter rate of 3.9%. Due to the method used to determine its form, Unown Z will always be slightly less common than the others, at 2.3%.

Quick! It's Qwilfish!
Halfway through the route, there is a pier with three Fishermen. Once you defeat Fisher Ralph, be sure to trade phone numbers with him. He will call occasionally to alert you about a Mass outbreak of a certain Pokémon species. Qwilfish are usually difficult to find, but will be more likely to appear along 32 for a short time. The swarm only lasts until midnight, so be quick!

Scheming for SlowpokeTails
As you approach the southern end of the route, you are stopped by a shady man to the west of the Pokémon Center. He tries to sell you a "tasty, nutritious SlowpokeTail" for the special price of pdollar1,000,000. When he realizes that you do not have the cash, he shoos you away.

Fishing Guru 1
Visit the Pokémon Center to rest your weary team and prepare for the upcoming cave. Speak to the Fisherman near the counter to receive an Old Rod. With this fishing rod, you can now cast your line at any body of water to reel in Water Pokémon. The Old Rod is a low-end model, and is often only able to hook Magikarp.

Union Cave is a small cave on the southern end of Johto's peninsula, located between Routes 32 and 33. The ground-level tunnel simply connects the two routes together. Seawater wells up from underground in several areas, initially blocking access to the deepest parts of the cave. Exploring the lower levels at a later point reveals two more exits that lead back to the Ruins of Alph.

Go west to reach an X Attack in the northwest corner. Battle Hiker Daniel a few steps away to the south, then move southeastward to fight Hiker Russell. Turn south to reach Firebreather Bill; defeat him and collect the Great Ball in the dead-end path to the south. Go west to pick up a Potion, then continue southward. Walk up onto the rocky ridge with PokéManiac Larry and climb down the ladder.

Route 32

Route 32
The Ruins of Alph

Route 32 is a lengthy road that runs south along the shore from Violet City to Union Cave. A path on the north end leads west to the mysterious Ruins of Alph.

Ruins of Alph

The grounds where the Ruins of Alph are located can be reached from Route 32 to the east and Route 36 to the north. There are four interior chambers. Each chamber holds a puzzle in which tiles must be arranged to show the image of a specific Pokémon species. Completing each puzzle causes a series of Unown forms to begin appearing in the large hall beneath the complex. The mysterious Pokémon species appears in many different forms that all resemble letters of the alphabet.

Each chamber also features a message in Unown script on the rear wall. Deciphering this message and using the correct item or field move reveals a doorway to hidden room filled with items.

North chamber

The north chamber is the only one accessible at first. Examine the text on the rear wall to find a single word: ESCAPE. Using an Escape Rope here will return you to the entrance while also revealing a hidden doorway. The room behind holds a Berry, PSNCureBerry, Heal Powder, and an EnergyPowder. Dropping down through the hole at the back wall leads to a hidden room above the underground hall, where a message in Unown script can be found on the floor:

OUR WORDS SHALL REMAIN HERE FOR THE AGES

In the entry room, a bit of text beside the puzzle hints at the Pokémon's identity. Move the tiles to their proper place to reveal the Pokémon's image and complete the puzzle. Doing so causes the floor to fall away, dropping you into the underground hall where the first eleven forms of Unown have awakened.

Catch at least three different forms, and a Scientist investigating the ruins will approach you upon exiting the hall. He leads you to a nearby research facility and upgrades your Pokédex with its Unown Mode, allowing it to record the limited data available on each of the Unown forms.

Southeast chamber

The southeast chamber can be accessed after obtaining HM03 (Surf). Examine the text on the rear wall to find a single word: LIGHT. Using the move Flash here will reveal another hidden doorway. The room behind holds a Heal Powder, Energy Root, Gold Berry, and a Moon Stone. Dropping down through the hole at the back wall leads to a second hidden room above the underground hall, where another message in Unown script can be found on the floor:

THUS WE SHALL ERECT A POKEMON STATUE OUTSIDE

In the entry room, move the tiles to reveal an image of Aerodactyl, and the floor falls away. Completing this puzzle causes five more Unown forms to appear in the underground hall.

West chamber

The western chamber can only be accessed through Union Cave, after obtaining HM03 (Surf) and HM04 (Strength). Examine the text on the rear wall to find a single word: HOOH. Positioning a Ho-Oh in the first party slot will reveal another hidden doorway. The room behind holds a Stardust, Star Piece, MysteryBerry, and a Mystic Water. Dropping down through the hole at the back wall leads to a third hidden room above the underground hall, where another message in Unown script can be found on the floor:

WE HUMANS MUST LEARN TO WALK IN HARMONY WITH THEM
WE DEPART FOR THEIR SAKES

In the entry room, move the tiles to reveal an image of Ho-Oh, and the floor falls away. Completing this puzzle causes three more Unown forms to appear.

Southwest chamber

The southwest chamber can only be accessed through Union Cave, after obtaining HM03 (Surf). Examine the text on the rear wall to find a single word: WATER. Attempting to use a Water Stone here will reveal another hidden doorway. The room behind holds a Revival Herb, Charcoal, Gold Berry, and a MysteryBerry. Dropping down through the hole at the back wall leads to a fourth hidden room above the underground hall, where a final message in Unown script can be found on the floor:

THEY POSSESS GREAT INSIGHT AND REFUSE THE OUTSIDE WORLD

In the entry room, move the tiles to reveal an image of Omanyte, and the floor falls away. Completing this puzzle causes the final seven Unown forms to appear.

He will call occasionally to alert you about a swarm of a certain Pokémon species. Qwilfish are usually difficult to find, but will be more likely to appear along Route 32 for a short time. The swarm only lasts until midnight, so be quick!

Scheming for SlowpokeTails

As you approach the southern end of the route, you are stopped by a shady man to the west of the Pokémon Center. He tries to sell you a "tasty, nutritious SlowpokeTail" for the special price of $1,000,000. When he realizes that you do not have the cash, he shoos you away.

Fishing Guru 1

Visit the Pokémon Center to rest your weary team and prepare for the upcoming cave. Speak to the Fisherman near the counter to receive an Old Rod. With this fishing rod, you can now cast your line at any body of water to reel in Water-type Pokémon. The Old Rod is a low-end model, and is often only able to hook Magikarp.

Union Cave

Union Cave, 1F
Union Cave, B1F
Union Cave, B2F

Union Cave is a small cave on the southern end of Johto's peninsula, located between Routes 32 and 33. The ground-level tunnel simply connects the two routes together. Seawater wells up from underground in several areas, initially blocking access to the deepest parts of the cave. Exploring the lower levels at a later point reveals two more exits that lead back to the Ruins of Alph.

1F

Go west to reach an X Attack in the northwest corner. Battle Hiker Daniel a few steps away to the south, then move southeastward to fight Hiker Russell. Turn south to reach Firebreather Bill; defeat him and collect the Great Ball in the dead-end path to the south. Go west to pick up a Potion, then continue southward. Walk up onto the rocky ridge with PokéManiac Larry and climb down the ladder.

B1F (North)

Pick up TM39 (Swift) to the west and an X Defend to the east. Seawater blocks the way northward for now, so climb the ladder back up to 1F.

Return to the Ruins
Requires: HM03 (Surf), HM04 (Strength)

Return later and use Surf to cross the water and reach two branching paths. The northern tunnel leads to the western part of the Ruins of Alph, which houses the third puzzle and the area's only patch of tall grass. The southern tunnel is blocked by a boulder; using Strength to clear a path leads to the fourth puzzle in the southwest part of the ruins.

1F

Walk down from the ridge and head east. Pick up the Awakening in the last dead-end tunnel to the south, then battle Firebreather Ray to reach the exit.

Down to the Depths
Requires: HM03 (Surf)

Return later and use Surf to cross the pool of water in the southwest area.

B1F (South)

Battle PokéManiac Calvin and Surf eastward. Climb down the ladder next to PokéManiac Andrew.

B2F

Cross the water to reach an Elixer in the northeast area. Sail southward to reach Cooltrainer Nick and a Hyper Potion on the east-central ridge. Go northwestward across the water to battle Cooltrainer Gwen, then head south to fight Cooltrainer Emma. On Fridays, a wild Lapras wanders its way in from the sea and appears in the southern-most pool.
