Bombirdier could also take inspiration from the Fiat BR.20 Cicogna, an Italian medium bomber plane nicknamed after the stork, which was first and mainly used for the Spanish Civil War.

Given the insect-like motifs in its pre-evolutions Pawniard and Bisharp, Kingambit also vaguely resembles a rhinoceros beetle: its hair, the blade on its head, and the curved blades on its waist resemble the beetle's carapace, horn, and legs, respectively; and its prostrating stance before attacking opponents with its blade is similar to how rhinoceros beetles fight each other. This inspiration might have come from the fact that Japanese rhinoceros beetles are called 甲虫 kabutomushi in Japanese, literally "Kabuto insect", where Kabuto is a type samurai helmet.

Kleavor's overall design, especially its stone axe forelegs, may be inspired by the idiom 蟷螂の斧 tōrō no ono (lit. mantis's axe), a figurative expression that connotes a courageous but doomed resistance. In Japanese, the alternate name for the mantis is 斧虫 onomushi, literally meaning "axe bug".

Sirfetch'd's appearance may also be based on Sir Lancelot du Lac (literally "Sir Lancelot of the Lake"), one of the members of the Knights of the Round Table. In Arthurian legend, before he revealed his identity to King Arthur, he was known as the "White Knight" for his white armor. The Lancelot leek, which is a wild onion variant named after him, may also be referenced. Sirfetch'd's overall personality may be based on the code of chivalry.

Hatoboh may be a combination of 鳩 hato (pigeon) and 坊 bō (boy, monk). It may also be derived from イーハトーヴ Ihatov (also spelled イーハトーヴォ/イーハトーボ Ihatovo), a fictional ideal world mentioned in some of Kenji Miyazawa's works.

Nincada's association with ninjas may be inspired by stories of ninjas using cicadas to mask their own sounds, or a reference to fabled ninja techniques: doton no jutsu (escape jutsu), a technique of sneaking into a pre-dug hole and hiding until the opponent is gone and utsusemi no jutsu (cicada skin technique), a technique using decoys to misdirect opponents.

This combination may be further inspired by stories of ninjas using cicadas to mask their own sounds, or a reference to the utsusemi no jutsu (cicada skin technique), a technique using decoys to misdirect opponents.
