Held item
| This move effect may be in need of research. Reason: Does it allow roaming Pokémon to bypass trapping moves and Abilities, and if so, does it play a special animation when they flee in Generation III? If a player's Pokémon holding a Smoke Ball faints and the player chooses to flee instead of sending out another Pokémon, are they guaranteed to escape in Generation II? In Generation II, does it allow the player to flee from Team Rocket Hideout traps, GS Ball Celebi, Tin Tower Suicune (in Crystal), or the scripted Red Gyarados? You can discuss this on the talk page. |
Generation II
If held by the player's Pokémon, fleeing from a wild Pokémon is guaranteed to succeed. It does not ignore trapping moves.
Generations III and IV
If held by a Pokémon, it can flee and Teleport successfully, regardless of trapping moves and Abilities. If the player's Pokémon holding a Smoke Ball faints, if the player attempts to flee instead of sending out another Pokémon, they will escape without fail.
In Generation III only, the Smoke Ball plays a special animation when used.
Generation V
Wild Pokémon cannot successfully Teleport while trapped, even if they hold a Smoke Ball.
If the player's Pokémon holding a Smoke Ball faints, the player is no longer guaranteed to flee successfully.
Generation VI onward
If held by a Pokémon, it can Teleport successfully, regardless of trapping moves and Abilities.
If the Nihilego encountered at Aether Paradise is given a Smoke Ball, it will be able to flee on turn 5 of the battle even if it is trapped.

Trivia
- In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, despite its effect not being applicable in most battles due to the inability to flee, it does still have its effect. If a wild Trapinch encountered at a Poké Spot has Arena Trap, the player can successfully use Teleport if the user holds a Smoke Ball.
