A Pokémon Safari stage

Pokémon Safari (Japanese: ポケモンサファリ Pokémon Safari) is a type of special stage in Pokémon Shuffle where several Pokémon can appear, denoted by a question mark. Whenever a Safari stage is accessed, the player will battle one of the Pokémon that can appear in it, chosen at random. Different Pokémon have different rates of appearance, and there is no direct way to know which Pokémon will appear before playing. The cost per play is Heart ×1. To access Pokémon Safari stages, the player must have cleared main stage 90.

Due to the nature of these stages, the Optimize button is unavailable, however most of the available Pokémon in a safari will usually share one or two type weaknesses. Most Safaris (with one temporary exception) are 3-Pokémon Stages that only allow three Support Pokémon.

For the game's end of service period, Pokémon Safaris began running on a consistent, 24-week schedule, with each lasting for one or two weeks. Across the game's live service period, there were 26 different Pokémon Safari events, although many were re-released, sometimes with expanded selections of Pokémon. Many of the end-of-service events feature Pokémon from the old events, but on the whole the new ones significantly mix them up.

The initial three events used the name "Pokémon Safari Appears!"; afterwards, it changed to "A New Pokémon Safari" (in October of 2015). The fourth release was also the first to appear in Pokémon Shuffle Mobile. The title "Head Back Into The Safari!" has appeared on the re-releases of several events.

Pity system

To limit the amount of hearts a player must spend to encounter rare Pokémon, there is a "pity system" in place. Essentially, the player is guaranteed to encounter every Pokémon in a safari at least once within their first 30 plays of that safari stage.

More-specifically, the first 30 plays do not roll the encounter rates with each play - instead, they have a pre-set amount of encounters per Pokémon, proportional to the Pokémon's encounter rate. For example, a Pokémon with an encounter rate of 3.33% (1/30) will appear exactly once within the first 30 plays, and cannot appear again until after the first 30 plays have been exhausted. While this effectively makes the first 30 plays not random, Pokémon are still encountered in a random order.

After the first 30 plays, there are no guarantees, and the encounter rates are rolled with each play.

Drops

If a Pokémon encountered in a safari has already been caught, then it has a chance to drop the following items:

  • 25% chance to drop Exp. Booster S ×1
  • 3.125% chance to drop Exp. Booster M ×1
  • 1.5625% chance to drop Exp. Booster L ×1

Drop rates can be increased if the Drop Rate Increase (DRI) effect is purchased from the Special Shop.
