The player forming a close bond with Dendra

Forming a bond (Japanese: きずな bond) is a mechanic found in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet that takes place at Naranja AcademyS/Uva AcademyV when interacting with specific characters. It involves meeting them at different points throughout the academy, and forming a bond with them through four different stages.

Mechanics

Initially, a character may be spotted at one of the rooms in the academy, where they can be interacted with, often confiding in the player about a problem that they're having. Following their initial interaction, the player can meet with that character on three additional occasions, where they can further their bond. After each stage, a string of text will display, which describes the closeness of the bond the player has with that character.

As of Version 3.0.0, any of the faculty members at the academy that the player has formed a close bond with, excluding Director Clavell and Jacq, can be invited as a Special Coach to the League Club Room at Blueberry Academy. Additionally, a short story involving the bosses of Team Star can be activated at the academy, provided the player has formed a close bond with Penny and passed final exams for at least one class.

Clavell

Clavell's interactions are unlocked as the player progresses through the ★ Starfall Street ★ events.

Character # Location Story
. 1 Director's Office Clavell briefly discusses about the player's progress with the Treasure Hunt before asking what the term "cheugy" means.
2 Director's Office Clavell asks the player which teacher had the most favorable impression on them.
3 Director's Office After commenting on the player's recent exploits, Clavell asks the player which hairstyles are cool at the moment.
4 Director's Office Clavell asks the player to remain friends with Penny if they would be happy to. Once this is affirmed, he will gift the player with a Big Nugget.

Dendra

Dendra's interactions will be unlocked as the player progresses through her classes and exams.

Character # Location Story
1 Schoolyard The player finds Dendra in the schoolyard, and they will run three laps together. Dendra will compliment the player's athleticism and offer to share one of her homemade sandwiches. After realising that the sandwich does not taste good, Dendra admits to not being good at making food.
2 Home Ec Room Dendra is with Saguaro to train on how to make sandwiches. The players eats her sandwich which turns out to be soggy with too much meat, and Saguaro suggests adding in butter to enhance its taste.
3 Nurse's Office Dendra meets nurse Miriam to try to get her to eat one of her sandwiches. Miriam does not appear keen due to previous bad experiences, but eats the sandwich at the player's insistence. Dendra's sandwich training pays off as Miriam compliments her sandwich. After Dendra leaves, Miriam lets the player know that Dendra is often in her often due to minor injuries from her training.
4 School Store Dendra appears in the store to buy a sandwich. She reveals to the player that she is taking a break from her sandwich training as she has already accomplished her goal - the goal of making a nice sandwich for Miriam, as a gift for all the injuries she has treated for Dendra. She then gives the player 10 Proteins.

Hassel

Hassel's interactions will be unlocked as the player progresses through his classes and exams.

Character # Location Story
1 Art Room Hassel welcomes the player and asks them if they find his class difficult, before asking them if they enjoy Pokémon battles due to their decision to challenge the Gyms during their Treasure Hunt. Hassel then ponders the nature of strength.
2 Schoolyard The player finds Hassel in the schoolyard, but as they converse, a woman arrives looking for Hassel. Hassel, annoyed by her presence, informs the player that an important matter has come up and leaves to talk with the woman.
3 Entrance Hall Hassel apologizes for the abrupt end to their prior conversation. He reveals that the woman is a relative from a faraway region, and that he is the descendant of a line of Dragon-type Trainers, having run away as a youth to "make a living with music". Hassel explains that his relative asked him to leave the academy and return home, claiming Hassel's father, the current head of their family, is in poor health. Hassel laments that he may not be cut out for the role of a teacher, but the player insists he is doing well at his work.
4 Art Room Hassel's relative returns to bring him home, but he remains determined to continue teaching at the academy, particularly as he has perceived that his father was not in fact in poor health. The relative reluctantly leaves. Hassel thanks the player and gives them 50 Dragon Tera Shards as a gift.

Miriam

Character # Location Story
1 Nurse's Office Miriam recognises the player and how they have started the Treasure Hunt. She reminisces that students only come to visit her to skip classes and that she finds herself bored as she does not teach any classes.
2 Nurse's Office Miriam relays that she had always wanted to be a health teacher, but had been unable to pass the certification exam.
3 Entrance Hall Inspired by the player's Treasure Hunt, Miriam begins to study during her breaks for the exam.
4 Nurse's Office Miriam rejoices at having passed the certification exam. She is unable to commence classes in the current year due to lack of room, but plans to start next year. She rewards the player with 10 Max Revives.

Raifort

Raifort's interactions will be unlocked as the player progresses through her classes and exams.

Character # Location Story
1 Staff Room Raifort converses with the player and notes that they have piqued her interest with their good conduct and answers they give in class. She thinks aloud that they may be of use later.
2 Entrance Hall Raifort completes the tale of the four treasures that she had started in class. She reveals that the treasures were Pokémon that became awakened due to a king's rapacity, and needed to be sealed away by Pokémon wielders as they were rampaging out of control.
3 Entrance Hall Raifort has found out that the treasures of ruin are true identities based on a news interview piece with a carpenter. She marks out the places of the four shrines where these Pokémon are sealed away, and asks the player to release them. She reveals that only someone with a bond with Pokémon can move the stakes that bind these shrines.
4 Entrance Hall Raifort asks the player whether they have found the four treasures of ruin. As each one is captured, she will marvel at each one. In order to complete Raifort's story line, the player must catch all four Treasures of Ruin. She will then gift the player a TM for Nasty Plot.

Saguaro

Saguaro's interactions will be unlocked as the player progresses through his classes and exams.

Character # Location Story
1 Home Ec Room Saguaro introduces himself to the player, who he has heard has a reputation for being a strong Trainer. He welcomes the player to come to the Home Ec Room often, as it is often considered a place of rest for many students.
2 Cafeteria Saguaro visits the cafeteria to "survey" the nutritional content of the student's food. He discloses his sweet tooth and preference to eat the peanut butter sandwich, but almost caves under pressure from other students who expect him to eat the spicy sandwich. At the player's insistence, he chooses to go for his preferred sweet sandwich.
3 Staff Room Saguaro enlists the player's help in obtaining the most sweet condiment in Paldea.
4 Home Ec Room Saguaro states that he has found out that this sweet condiment is the Sweet Herba Mystica. After the player gives him one, he will cook this into a delicious sweet dish that he enjoys. Another student sees him eating this sweet dish, and Saguaro reconciles to himself that there is no issue with others knowing about his sweet tooth despite his tough appearance. He gifts the player a Slowpoke Cup.

Salvatore

Salvatore's interactions will be unlocked as the player progresses through his classes and exams.

Character # Location Story
1 Staff Room Salvatore asks whether the player had come all the way to talk to him. Once the player affirms this, Salvatore will talk about the importance of communication.
2 School Yard Salvatore is beside a Pawmi who will not talk. Concerned that it is unwell, he asks the player as to how to help it. Once the player gives him a Potion, which Salvatore gives to the Pawmi, Salvatore decides to care for it for a short while.
3 Biology Lab Salvatore visits Jacq to get help with Pawmi as it is still not talking. Jacq states that they have already spoken to nurse Miriam who felt that Pawmi was healthy. Salvatore relays to the player that security cameras did show Pawmi being attacked by wild Pokémon, which is how it ended up at the school.
4 Staff Room Salvatore resolves to keep the wild Pawmi as he feels it would be too meek to survive outside. After this, Pawmi finally talks by letting out its cry. He then gives the player a Galarian Meowth

Tyme

Tyme's interactions will be unlocked as the player progresses through her classes and exams.

Character # Location Story
1 Staff Room Tyme will quiz the player about Rock-type moves before the conversation is interrupted by a young student who asks about her time as a Gym Leader and why she retired from this role. Tyme tells the student to wait until she has finished her conversation with the player, but the young student decides to leave instead.
2 Entrance Hall Tyme has been suspicious that someone has been intensely spying on her. She will ask the player whether it was them, to which the player will deny.
3 Cafeteria Noticing the sensation of an intense gaze again, Tyme ducks into the cafeteria to see who will follow her. Once the player arrives, another female student will enter.
4 Schoolyard Tyme can be found in the schoolyard setting an ambush to confront the student. Just as the player character arrives, the female student can be found in the distance hiding behind a tree. Tyme will confront the student, and the student confesses that she has been a fan of Tyme ever since Tyme's Gym Leader days. The student asks why Tyme retired suddenly from this role a year and a half ago, and Tyme responds that this was to focus on being a teacher. Tyme will then gift 50 Rock Tera Shards to the player.

Related stories

Interactions with Jacq, Nemona, Arven, and Penny follow a similar pattern of events, but these do not directly utilize the bond mechanic. Nemona, Arven, and Penny's stories are unlocked after completing the Academy Ace Tournament, and they will not gift the player with a reward at the end of their interactions.

Jacq

Character # Location Story
1 Biology Lab Jacq reveals that he created the Pokédex application and that the data will go to him for research purposes. He tasks the player to register 30 Pokémon in the Pokédex.
2 Biology Lab Once the player registers 30 Pokémon in the Pokédex, he will reward them with TMs for False Swipe.
3 Biology Lab Once the player registers 100 Pokémon in the Pokédex, he will reward them 20 Ultra Balls.
4 Biology Lab Once the player registers 200 Pokémon in the Pokédex, he will reward them 20 Quick Balls.
5 Biology Lab Once the player registers 400 Pokémon in the Pokédex, he will reward them a Shiny Charm. Clavell will enter and also congratulate the player.

Nemona

Character # Location Story
1 Schoolyard Nemona challenges the player to a battle for two hours.
2 Cafeteria Nemona challenges a random male student to a battle after hearing that he had tough Pokémon. The other student declines the offer before Nemona notices the player character approaching.
3 School Store Nemona can be found browsing the items at the store. She reflects that she had tried to challenge the same student to a battle unsuccessfully, and asks the player whether battling without winning can still be fun.
4 Classroom 1-A After seeing the player in the classroom, Nemona brings the player to her dorm room. She reminisces about the distance she sometimes has felt with others due to her status as Champion. She relays that she previously held back when battling others due to this, but with the player character as her rival, she is now resolved to go one hundred percent in her battling.

Arven

Character # Location Story
1 Cafeteria Arven is amazed at how strong his friends are, and looks down on himself as only being average in what he does. While conversing with the player, he decides to have a goal in finding himself, which he hopes to do by finding more about his motherS/fatherV who was a student at the academy.
2 Director's Office Arven shows the player a sample of research that his motherS/fatherV completed which Clavell has dug up for him. Arven then notices that there are a lot of research equipment in Clavell's office, and Clavell reveals that these were the lab equipment of his motherS/fatherV. He also notes that his motherS/fatherV would often be so dedicated to their research that they will fall asleep here.
3 Entrance Hall While looking for more research written by his motherS/fatherV, Arven stumbles upon a copy of the Scarlet BookS/Violet BookV which was also relevant to his mother'sS/father'sV research. He reveals a smudged and blurred page in the book.
4 Classroom 2-G Arven is studying in the classroom and after seeing the player, brings them to his dorm room. He reminisces about their time finding the Herba Mystica to heal Mabosstiff, and resolves to become a famous chef that cooks healthy food to heal Pokémon like Mabosstiff.

Penny

Character # Location Story
1 Entrance Hall The player finds Penny spying on Giacomo and Ortega in the entrace hall. She notes that she has been checking in on them as she was worried about them assimiliating in at school. They then overhear Giacomo and Ortega talking about trying their best to fit in at school. Giacomo tries yelling greetings, which makes other students warm up to them (at Penny's surprise).
2 School Store The player catches Penny spying on Atticus who she has been the most worried about. They overhear Atticus inquiring about a limited-edition ninja garment from the school store only to find out they had already been sold out. Atticus resolves trying to find the rival who had bought these garments, only to find out it was his friend who he had promised the garments for, who had been the one to have bought them.
3 Art Room Penny is in the art room as she had heard rumors that Team Star were planning to raid it. Mela and Eri then come into the room. Although Mela starts off being a little too intimidating, at Eri's prompting, Mela asks the other students whether she could join the art club. She states she was inspired to join due to a friend who made her the flaming boots for her. Eri notices Penny and comes over, and relays that she and Carmen have also started up a wrestling club.
4 Classroom 1-D The player finds Penny in the classroom, and she asks to meet the player in her dorm room to speak in private. In her room, she talks about spying on her Team Star friends who have returned back to school. She feels that they are having a good time and have changed for the better. She feels bad that she could not believe in them, while she has not changed since coming back to school.

Team Star

As of Version 3.0.0, after forming a close bond with Penny and passing final exams for at least one class, the player can talk to Eri and Giacomo in the Entrance Hall of the academy to activate a short story in which the player tutors the Team Star Bosses.

Character # Location Story
1 Entrance Hall The player finds Eri and Giacomo in the school entrance. After having some difficulty recognizing them in their school uniforms, Eri and Giacomo raise concerns about the remainder of their Team Star friends and how they are doing academically. The player agrees to tutor the others to help with their studies. They bring the player to a classroom where Ortega and Atticus are studying late in the day. They agree to let the player be their tutor but note that Mela departed suddenly earlier.
2 Schoolyard The player finds in the schoolyard and brings her back to the classroom. The player then tutors the three Team Star students. Eri gifts the player a Gold Bottle Cap, Modified Uniform A, Modified Uniform B, Team Star Sunglasses, Team Star Gloves, Team Star Heels, Team Star Helmet, and Team Star Case. Eri also teaches them the Hasta la Vistar ☆ emote.
Penny then enters the classroom but tries to leave, feeling left out. The others explain the situation and Penny then also offers to help them with their studies.
