In the anime

Noctowl first apeared in EP154. A man was trying to capture a Shiny, midget Noctowl by using traps, but kept failing due to the Owl Pokémon's intelligence. After Team Rocket was sent flying, the Noctowl allowed Ash to have the chance to capture it. Ash's Noctowl was used very much like his Pidgeotto, but it also had access to Psychic attacks such as Confusion which contribute greatly to Ash's victory against Morty. Ash left his Noctowl at Prof. Oak's lab when he set out for the Hoenn Region.
