After meeting at the Lilycove Berry markets, May and Kelly quickly became friends and rivals in the upcoming Pokémon Contest. Kelly escorted the group to her mother's Pokéblock store, where May was introduced to Pokéblock making and a Berry Blender for the first time.

In Lessons in Lilycove, using her Combusken, May got off to a bad start, but managed to scrape through the Lilycove Contest's Appeals Round. Kelly, on the other hand, was very successful in making her way through, earning herself a 27.6 for her Grumpig's Pokéblock juggling performance.

Kelly's Grumpig first appeared in Pokéblock, Stock, and Berry. It is very well trained and Kelly readily feeds it homemade Pokéblock, as evident by the sheen of its black pearls. It is normally seen outside its Poké Ball.
