Characteristics

Defensively, the Ground type is somewhat risky. It is weak to the common types Water, Grass and Ice. It resists Poison, which is a rare offensive type, and Rock. It is, however, immune to the Electric-type, posing a great advantage due to the minority of Pokémon resisting Electric-type moves that are not Electric-types themselves, and the fact that as of Generation V, only Zekrom and Rotom's Mow Form have a ¼ resistance to Electric.

Offensively, the Ground type is one of the three most important attacking types, together with Ice and Fighting. It is the only type super-effective against Electric, and is super-effective against five types in total; only the Fighting type is as powerful as this. It is also super-effective against the best defensive type, Steel. Grass- and Bug-types do resist Ground, but many of them lose their Ground resistance due to being part Poison. This, combined with the fact that the highly damaging, very accurate and rather popular (especially among physical attackers) move Earthquake has been available as TM26 in every generation so far, leads to Ground being very potent offensively.

The greatest disadvantage of the Ground type is that it does not affect the very common Flying-type Pokémon at all, or Pokémon with Levitate.

The Ground type combines very well with the Ice-type, as Ice covers Grass and Flying, while Ground covers Rock, Steel, and Fire. Ground and Rock also work very well together; Rock covers Ice and Flying while Ground covers Steel; as of Generation V, only Claydol, Flygon, Bronzong with Levitate, Breloom, Torterra, and Birijion resist both Rock and Ground. Most Ground-type Pokémon are able to learn Rock-type moves, possibly for that very purpose. Ground can pair up nicely with Flying, as it makes the Flying-type immune to Electric attacks, which are one of the Flying-types' weaknesses and at the same time make then immune to Earthquake. Also, as of Generation V, only fourteen Pokémon out of nearly 650 can resist both Ground and Flying: Zapdos, Aerodactyl, Skarmory, Solrock, Lunatone, Bronzor, Bronzong (only if they have Levitate), Aaken, Akeosu, Emonga, Shibishirasu, Shibibiiru, Shibirudon, and Borutorosu.

When used in contests, Ground-type moves typically become Tough moves. No Ground-type moves are Beauty moves, while they can be the other three types.

In total, there are 59 Pokémon with the Ground-type.

Trivia

  • Along with the Template:Type2, Ground-type moves are super-effective against the most types: five.
  • Each generation has introduced at least one Ground-type Pokémon whose English name begins with the letter G.
  • Although Ground-type Pokémon are immune to Electric-type attacks, the ability Static still affects them.
  • In the anime, Ground-type Pokémon's immunity to Electric-type attacks is sometimes treated inconsistently, sometimes upheld and sometimes ignored.
  • All types that resist the Template:Type2 are weak to Ground, and vice versa.
  • Even though it only cannot affect Flying-types and Pokémon with Levitate, more Pokémon are unaffected by Ground-type moves than Pokémon which are immune to any other type, due to the sheer number of Pokémon with the two conditions.
