Each time a predetermined piece of data is revealed to the player about a famous person listed within the Fame Checker (through mediums such as Magazines in the Pokémon world), it will be recorded. This information is arranged into categories, first by character, then in subcategories in an attempt to give a more or less whole perspective of the character in question (e.g. "Favorite kind of Pokémon", "Friends and Family", etc.). The player can observe these pieces of information at their will at any time. In numerous cases, these information pieces have requirements that must be fulfilled first to acquire that particular quote (ex. post-Elite Four). Once all six data pieces are obtained in a person's section, a message directly from that person will be obtained.
In FireRed and LeafGreen, there are several characters who the player can collect information about in the Fame Checker.
Though interactive, the Fame Checker does not affect the story or playability of the game, but is apparently intended to be useful to those who are interested.

Each character who appears in the Fame Checker has six different entries that can be unlocked. Each of these entries corresponds to a quote about the character that the player can encounter within the game. When the player encounters this dialogue in the game, it will be registered in their Fame Checker. Prior to unlocking an entry, it appears as a question mark with no title or indication of where the player can unlock it.

The Fame Checker appears in the FireRed & LeafGreen of Pokémon Adventures. It serves a slightly different purpose of recording and storing voice messages. Red and Blue return to Oak's lab at the start of the arc and come across two Fame Checkers meant for them. A message recorded onto the Fame Checkers from Professor Oak tells the two Pokédex holders to deposit their Pokédexes in an item transfer machine and head to the Sevii Islands with the Tri-Pass issued to them. This was in fact the Team Rocket member Orm forcing Oak to take the Pokédexes from them for the evil organization's benefits. Oak had recorded the entire conversation between himself and his kidnapper on the Fame Checker meant for Green. A while later, Green used the recording on her Fame Checker to reveal the truth to Red, who had been dispirited after his defeat to Deoxys.

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, there are several characters who the player can collect information about in the Fame Checker.

Each character who appears in the Fame Checker has six different entries that can be unlocked. Each of these entries corresponds to a quote about the character that the player can encounter within the game. When the player encounters this dialogue in the game, it will be registered in their Fame Checker. Each entry has a title (e.g. "Favorite kind of Pokémon", "Friends and Family", etc.), a location (which does not necessarily correspond to the save location), and the character or text being quoted; additionally, the overworld sprite of the character or object that provided the quote appears as an icon that represents that entry. Prior to unlocking an entry, it appears as a question mark with no title or indication of where the player can unlock it.

These quotes can come from a variety of sources: the character themselves, major characters, unnamed NPCs, NPC Trainers, signs, Pokémon Journal, etc.

Once all six data pieces are obtained in a person's section, the player can read a message that that character has sent directly to the player.

The characters who have information stored in the Fame Checker in Generation III are as follows:

FireRed & LeafGreen arc

Fame Checkers first appeared in Return to Pallet Town. When Red and Blue returned to Professor Oak's Laboratory in Pallet Town, they discovered three Fame Checkers left for them and Green by Professor Oak. On the Fame Checkers, the two Pokédex holders heard a voice message from the Professor himself, asking them to deposit their Pokédexes into the PC Item Storage System, much to their surprise and confusion.

In Going Green, it was revealed that Professor Oak had been forced to make the aforementioned voice messages by Orm as a part of Team Rocket's plan to have Professor Oak reverse-engineer Team Rocket their own version of the Pokédex in preparation of catching Deoxys. However, what Orm hadn't noticed was that Professor Oak had secretly turned Green's Fame Checker on while being attacked, recording the conversation between him and Orm into it.

Trivia

 • In Koga's Fame Checker entries, his daughter Janine is incorrectly identified as "Charine".
