The setting for the competition

The Hoenn Grand Festival (Japanese: ホウエングランドフェスティバル Hoenn Grand Festival) is an anime-exclusive event during the Advanced Generation series. All Pokémon Coordinators who earn five Contest Ribbons from the Hoenn region are eligible to enter.

The competition is held in Slateport City. Competing Coordinators are housed in hotels in small villages. All competitors receive a guide with maps of the stadium and the tournament rules.

Competition

The Hoenn Grand Festival started in Hi Ho Silver Wind! and ended in Rhapsody in Drew. Like most Hoenn Pokémon Contests, Vivian Meridian is the announcer. During the Grand Festival, 247 participants were entered.

The winner of the Hoenn Grand Festival receives the Ribbon Cup as their prize and becomes Top Coordinator.

Rounds

Each round is judged by a panel of five individuals. They include Raoul Contesta, Mr. Sukizo and three Nurse Joys from the Hoenn region.

Appeals

In the appeals stage of Hoenn Grand Festival, there are two rounds to appeal. In the first round, Coordinators have their Pokémon perform with no more than one move. Only 64 Coordinators move on to the next round. The second round is a full appeal round like regular Contests; Coordinators have their Pokémon use as many moves as necessary. The 32 top scoring Coordinators from this round move on to the next stage.

Double-battles

The third stage marks the beginning of the Grand Festival's battle rounds and shows how skilled Coordinators and their Pokémon are when put into battle. All Coordinators are matched-up randomly by computer up to the semi-finals, which is the last round that computer will choose a random match-up. Whoever loses is out of the tournament. The winner of the fifth and final round of this stage is then declared the winner of the whole Hoenn Grand Festival.
