Sudowoodo (Japanese: ウソッキー Usokkie) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.
It evolves from Bonsly when leveled up while knowing Mimic.
Biology
Physiology
Sudowoodo has a brown, log-shaped body with some yellow spots on it. It has short legs with toe-less feet. Sudowoodo has club (♣) shaped hands that remain green year-round. Sudowoodo has a forked "branch" on top of its head.
Gender differences
A female has shorter "branches" on the top of its head.
Special abilities
Sudowoodo is most known for Mimicking its opponents' attacks. Sudowoodo is protected from receiving recoil damage when using attacks like Wood Hammer and Double-Edge. As a Rock-type Pokémon, Sudowoodo is capable of a wide variety of Rock and Ground attacks such as Stone Edge and Earthquake. It can also learn Fighting-type attacks, such as Hammer Arm and Brick Break. Sudowoodo can also learn Calm Mind, which is strange due to the fact that Hidden Power, Mud-Slap, and Snore (the latter two only from move tutors in Emerald) are the only Special moves that Sudowoodo can use (and very poorly on that note). Even stranger is the fact that Sudowoodo lacks the ability to use Hyper Beam and Giga Impact, despite being a fully evolved Pokémon.
Behavior
Sudowoodo pretends to be a plant, but it is afraid of water, and its composition is closer to a rock than to a plant.
Habitat
Sudowoodo can be found living in forests. But finding one can sometimes be a little tricky, since Sudowoodo have the aforementioned habit of pretending to be a tree in order to blend in with their surroundings.
However, during winters, Sudowoodo's camouflage fails. It's forearms remain green, even in winter, thus it is easily spotted from true trees. This may cause massive migrations of sudowoodo to more southern areas, where the winter may not affect its camouflage.
Diet
- Main article: Pokémon food
In the anime
Sudowoodo first appeared in Type Casting. Two Pokémon researchers were arguing whether Sudowoodo was a Grass- or Template:Type2.
A Sudowoodo was pretending to be part of a tree in Camp Pikachu.
A Golden Sudowoodo appeared in All That Glitters is Not Golden. A boy named Keenan experimented on his Sudowoodo to make it strong against Water and it turned golden. The Sudowoodo was upset with the change, and hated Keenan for what he did to it. Keenan managed to turn his Sudowoodo back to normal at the end of the episode.
Brock's Bonsly evolved into Sudowoodo in Leave It To Brocko.
Pokédex entries
- DP014: "Sudowoodo. The Imitation Pokémon. Disguised as a tree, it's the evolved form of Bonsly."
In the manga
In the Pokémon Special manga
In Template:PSV, a Sudowoodo disguises itself as a tree in the middle of Route 37, hiding from a Rhydon. Gold convinced Sudowoodo not to run away from its problems, and Sudowoodo went on to defeat Rhydon in hand-to-hand combat. It soon after joined Gold's team.
A Sudowoodo is captured by Emerald at the Battle Frontier. It appears to be a female Sudowoodo, due to its motherly nature.

Other appearances
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Sudowoodo is a Poké Float. After Wooper first appears, it will move down the right of the screen while Sudowoodo is on the left. Unlike most of the Poké Floats, players are not required to ever go on Sudowoodo. A trophy of Sudowoodo can be obtained after playing on the Poké Floats stage.
Trophy information
An imitation Pokémon with an aversion to battle, Sudowoodo always poses as a tree in order to avoid being attacked. Despite their arboreal appearance, these Pokémon are actually Rock-types, and therefore highly vulnerable to water. When it begins to rain, they vanish. A Sudowoodo can be found blocking Route 36 in Johto.

- Sudowoodo is the only Pokémon to date with a catch rate of 65.
- Sudowoodo is the first pure Template:Type2 Pokémon in the National Dex order.

- In Generation II, only one Sudowoodo appears (from being sprayed with water from a Squirtbottle.) Similarly, in Generation III, only one Sudowoodo appears--this time as the result of a spray from the Wailmer Pail. However, in Generation IV the player can get multiple Sudowoodo by evolving Bonsly or by catching it in grass.
- In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, Sudowoodo, along with Skuntank, Togekiss, Fearow and Yanma, weighs as much as the male protagonist of the game.
Origin
It may be based on petrified wood, plants which have become fossilized over time.
Name origin
Sudowoodo's name may be a portmanteau of pseudo, false, and wood. Its Japanese name could be a misspelling of 嘘つき usotsuki, fibber. It could also be a combination of 嘘 uso, false, and 木 ki, wood or tree.
In other languages
- German: Mogelbaum - A combination of mogeln (to cheat) and Baum (tree).
- French: Simularbre - From simuler (simulate) and arbre (tree).
