Trivia
- Dunsparce was made to be almost as big as person, however in DP001, it is shown smaller than a Pidgey.
- The only sprites showing Dunsparce's open mouth are in Pokémon Silver and Pokémon Crystal.
- Dunsparce is the only non-Template:Type2 Pokémon to learn Roost by leveling up.
Origin
Dunsparce is based on the mythical tsuchinoko. Tsuchinoko are 30 cm to 80 cm long, with a large head and poisonous fangs. Its body is thicker than its head and tail. The noises it makes resemble squeaks and chirps and snores. Unlike real snakes, which slither from side to side, a tsuchinoko wiggles ahead in a straight line. The tsuchinoko curls its body to leap through the air.
Name origin
ノコッチ comes from つちのこ tsuchinoko, a fabled snake creature. The letters are swapped to be のこっち.
Dun can mean grayish yellow or gloomy, and sparse refers to rarity. Dunsparce's name could also be a combination of dunce meaning dull-witted, stupid, or an ignorant person, a dolt, and sparse which can mean meager. The German name Dummisel contains the word dumm which means stupid.
