Jubilife Village
Once you’ve returned to Jubilife Village, go to Galaxy Hall and visit Commander Kamado in his office on the top floor. He has some questions about why the noble Pokémon have been sent into frenzies, and the nature of the space-time rift, but for now you can return to the Wallflower for some of Beni’s finest potato mochi.
- You’ve completed the mission Scaling Perilous Heights!
Over dinner, which Kamado has kindly paid for, you, Rei/Akari, and Professor Laventon muse on the progress you’ve made in becoming a part of the Survey Corps, and how dealing with Pokémon isn’t nearly as fraught with danger as it used to be, making life in Jubilife Village easier for everyone.
When you awake in the morning, both Adaman and Irida are waiting for you, bickering between themselves, and the three of you make your way to Commander Kamado’s office. Once inside, Kamado reveals that you’ve quelled four of the five nobles, and the only one left is Avalugg, which resides in the Alabaster Icelands. Avalugg is the largest of the lords, and our new mission, The Slumbering Lord of the Tundra, is to quell him.
Before we depart, Kamado tells us that a number of people are still suspicious of us because of how we arrived in Hisui, and that we must continue to work hard to earn their trust. When we get downstairs there’s a shriek from Cyllene’s office - it turns out to just be a Wurmple that she asks her Abra to teleport away, but it does reveal why she tends to stay behind her desk. She tells us that as the Alabaster Icelands are the most dangerous area we’ll visit, we must be at least a Fifth Star rank for her to grant us access.
Once you’ve completed enough research tasks to hit Fifth Star rank (this requires 8,500 research points), show Cyllene to have her certify you, granting you the ability to control Pokémon up to level 65 in battle, improving the rewards you receive from your survey reports, and giving you the recipe for crafting Wing Balls, an improved version of the Feather Ball.
Before we can go to the Alabaster Icelands, Rei/Akari and Professor Laventon are waiting for us at the front gate. Laventon has a problem - while the other frenzied nobles have hurt people, Avalugg hasn’t done so, so is it right for us to try and subdue him, especially if we’re putting ourselves in danger. He then asks what Commander Kamado’s reasons are for wanting to quell the nobles, and hopes it is to build a future where people and Pokémon can coexist peacefully. Rei/Akari then wish to show you how they’ve improved in battle, and you won’t be able to advance to the Icelands until you face them.
Mr. Mime will always be sent out first, but the order afterwards can vary based on type matchups. Pikachu also has effort level one in all of its stats. With a full party of six at your disposal, and with Staravia and Pikachu not yet fully evolved, if you play your type advantages properly and make use of Agile Style moves to buy yourself extra turns this fight shouldn’t be too much of a hassle (and can also be used to help hit research tasks that require Pokémon to use certain moves). After your victory you can make any further preparations you desire before going to the newly unlocked Alabaster Icelands.
Alabaster Icelands
On your arrival in the Alabaster Icelands you’ll be greeted by Professor Laventon, with Adaman and Irida arriving shortly afterwards, bickering with each other as usual. They’re going to meet Gaeric at Avalugg's Legacy, and we have to follow them to the waypoint marked on the map. As the name suggests, the landscape is filled with Ice-type Pokémon, so adding Fire, Rock, and SteelPokémon to your party will be useful if you get into any battles.
Cross the Icelands to reach Adaman, Irida, and Avalugg’s warden and Irida’s teacher Gaeric, who is strangely shirtless given the freezing conditions. Gaeric introduces himself and asks why we’ve come to quell Lord Avalugg, what is wrong with Avalugg being frenzied, and what is our heart telling us we should do? He does not seem convinced by our answers, given that Avalugg has not harmed anyone, and challenges us to a battle to prove our strength.
Gaeric sends both of his Pokémon out at once, and the Glalie should be your priority given that it is twice the level of the Froslass, although the Froslass does have effort level three in both its attack and special attack (even if it only has special moves). The two can create a nasty combo by inflicting frostbite, thus doubling the damage you take from Hex, but all in all this fight shouldn’t be too difficult if you have a full party of six Pokémon.
Once you’re victorious Gaeric will give you his seal of approval, and tells us that if we wish to quell Avalugg we’ll have to gather some Eternal Ice, before bringing it to the lord’s seat. The problem is that for us to do that we’ll need the ability to fly, which means we’ll need the help of Braviary, our final ride Pokémon. In order to do that we’ll need to find a young lady named Sabi, who can normally be found around Snowpoint Temple. Before Adaman can finish his thought we’re interrupted by Sabi herself, who’s waiting for us atop a nearby block of ice.
Climb up the iceberg from behind (you do not need to mount a ride Pokémon for this) and speak to Sabi. She has deduced that we require Braviary’s help to quell Avalugg, and she’s happy to aid us - providing we can catch her, that is, as she disappears elsewhere in the Icelands.
Sabi sets herself up in the south, so mount Wyrdeer and follow the marker, transitioning to Sneasler at the end to climb the mountain at the end. Once you catch up with her she’ll head off again, this time to Snowpoint Temple in the far north of the Alabaster Icelands.
There are two main ways of getting to Snowpoint Temple - the first is to use Sneasler to scale the cliff face next to the Pearl Settlement in the northeast area of the Icelands. The other is to take the ascending path next to Glacier Terrace, past the alpha Sneasel, and follow it up the mountain, behind Lake Acuity, and on to the entrance of Snowpoint Temple, where Sabi is indeed waiting for you.
Speak to Sabi, who’s behaving as quixotically as ever, and she’ll enter the temple, waiting for you to find her at the other end. A Pearl Clan attendant standing guard says that you are free to enter if you have warden Sabi’s approval, but be careful, as you’ll need to solve the puzzles inside in order to get to her. The attendant’s advice is to pay attention to which direction the statues are pointing, and to the patterns on their chests.
Snowpoint Temple
Enter Snowpoint Temple, a large stone building filled with statues, and head to your left and up the stairs, catching, battling, or dodging the wild Pokémon as you see fit. After two flights of stairs you’ll find more mysterious statues, as the path curves round to a large stone door with three panels on it - the symbols for Ice, Rock, and Steel, the types of the three titans Regice, Regirock, and Registeel. In order to advance you have to press the panels in the correct order, which you can find from the statues you’ve passed. Follow them back to the top of the stairs, and you’ll see the correct order. At the door, press the symbols for rock, steel, and ice (in that order) and the door should open in front of you.
Once you’re through the door you should see another statue in front of you with - continue in the direction it is facing, and you’ll see the next statue angled diagonally away from you, while the follow up points through a window in the wall. Go round the other side of the wall to this statue, make note of the symbol, then check the final statue standing directly in front of the next door. If you’ve been tracking them correctly, you should enter the pattern ice, rock, steel, rock, ice, opening the door.
Through the door you’ll find a final statue puzzle. This time the sequence starts around the corner to your right, so follow the direction the statues are looking one more time before reaching the door, to your left when you enter this area of the temple. The pattern is steel, ice, rock, ice, steel, and rock, and this should open the door if inputted correctly. Once you’re through, continue through the temple, past the alpha Gallade, catching it if possible (this is difficult, as it is level 70, but doing so will give you a very powerful Pokémon for any upcoming battles), before finally reaching Sabi at the temple’s exit.
As you approach Sabi she’ll tell you of another of her premonitions, that of you flying with Braviary. In order for that to happen, you’ll have to defeat her in battle. She’ll give you the opportunity to back out and heal up your party if you need to, or you can dive straight in.
This is another battle where the opposition sends all of their Pokémon out at once, and the three do a very good job of covering each other’s weaknesses - Water-type Pokémon that do well against Rhyperior and Magmortar struggle against Electivire, for example. The exception to this is Ground-type Pokémon, who have a good matchup into all three, so using those, or Ground-type attacks, is a very good strategy. The Magmortar and Electivire are effort level four in both their defense and special defense, but the priority should be on removing the more offensively threatening Rhyperior first, before moving onto the others.
After your victory, Sabi’s games aren’t quite done yet, as she asks you to meet her on the temple roof, so climb the stairs and exit onto the roof, where Sabi and Braviary are waiting in front of you. When you talk to Sabi, you’ll be thrown right into a battle with Braviary, so make sure your team is ready beforehand.
There aren’t any research tasks for defeating Braviary with particular move types, giving you more freedom in which Pokémon you should optimally use. Anything with a strong super-effective move, especially if you can execute a Strong Style variant, should be enough to take it out.
Sabi is surprised you were able to defeat Braviary, and threatens to take off, but thankfully she was only joking, and plays her Celestica Flute for Braviary, prompting you to do the same. Braviary learns the sound of your playing, opens its heart, and hands over the Sky Plate. Adaman emerges from the temple and thanks Sabi for her help, although his mind seems to be elsewhere somewhat, concerned with the space-time rift.
Riding Braviary
You can summon Braviary by pressing the + button, switching ride Pokémon using the left and right buttons on the d-pad, although be careful doing so when airborne as you are not impervious to fall damage. You can also press the A button when falling to summon Braviary immediately to break any potentially dangerous drop. While flying, hold the B button to glide at speed, while holding the Y button sends Braviary into a fast dive.
Now we can ride Braviary, we have the ability to glide from the temple over to Avalugg's Legacy to get some Eternal Ice from its surface. Investigate the large spears of ice on the top of Avalugg's Legacy and your Arc Phone will start beeping, before you obtain a piece of the Eternal Ice we’ve been looking for. As we do so a noise comes from behind, and Gaeric appears on top of the iceberg, having finally been able to scale its sides unaided. Hand him the Eternal Ice, and he’ll tell you to meet him at the Icepeak Arena, before jumping off. We’re not capable of doing that, so use Braviary to meet Gaeric at the waypoint.
When you reach Gaeric again you’ll find that he’s not alone, and that Volo is alongside him. It emerges he’s there to give Gaeric an order of Swordcaps, but he can give you some pointers for the upcoming noble fight. Avalugg will barrage you with chunks of ice, fire off massive icicles, and also cause sharp ice crystals to emerge from the ground below you. With that, Volo bids you farewell, and Gaeric heads up to the arena.
At the Icepeak Arena, Gaeric uses the Eternal Ice we gathered to make Snow Balms we can use to quell lord Avalugg, before warning us that our dodging skills will need to be unrivalled if we are to emerge victorious, and asking us if we’re ready to take the frenzied noble. Make any changes to your party you desire, heal your Pokémon if required, and once you’re happy tell Gaeric that it’s time to take on Avalugg.
Frenzied Avalugg
We’re well aware of the pattern the noble fights take at this point, where we need to throw as many balms as possible at the frenzied Pokémon, dodge all the incoming attacks, and send out our Pokémon when it lets its guard down to lower the frenzy gauge further. The key difference this time around is that the Avalugg is so large we don’t have the ability to pivot around the Pokémon, and instead we’re confined to a small platform in front of it, greatly reducing our movement options.
Avalugg starts by firing balls of ice in a wave motion from one side of the arena to the other. Time your dodges through the waves, and use the space generated to fire balms. Avalug will then cause spears of ice to rise from the ground, which surge in straight lines indicated by blue circles on the floor. Avalugg will then fire Icicle Spears in your direction, before shooting an Ice Beam, starting on one side and going across to the other, before letting its guard down, giving you the ability to bring in a Pokémon.
Don’t worry if you take too much damage and are defeated by the Avalugg - as in the other noble battles, you are given the options to leave and come back later with a different, or improved, team, to restart the battle from the beginning, or to resume the fight from the most recent portion of the frenzy gauge you reached, at 25, 50, or 75% completion.
As the fight progresses and Avalugg’s frenzy gauge goes down, it will sometimes launch multiple attacks at the same time, and the spears of ice that rise from the floor cover a larger area and leave small stalagmites behind, hindering your movement even further.
Hisuian Avalugg is a dual Ice/Rock-type Pokémon, meaning it is weak to Water, Grass, Ground, and Rock-type attacks, with a double weakness to both Fighting-type and Steel-type moves. In addition, Hisuian Avalugg has a massive base defense stat at 184, but this is offset with a base special defense of just 36, so resisted special attacks will often be more effective than neutral or super effective physical moves. It is similarly lopsided on the attacking end, with a base attack stat of 127 compared to just 34 base special attack, so utilizing Pokémon with outstanding physical bulk is recommended. Avalugg’s 38 base speed also grants lots of opportunities for faster Pokémon to execute multiple moves before it can attack, especially if you can take advantage of having moves mastered, giving you the ability to use Agile Style attacks.
Once Avalugg’s frenzy gauge is fully depleted, you’ll throw one final Snow Balm at it, and it becomes cloaked in the brilliant light that finally frees it from its frenzy, and Avalugg will give you the Icicle Plate as a reward.
After the battle Gaeric is troubled that the enormous lord Avalugg could be quelled by a child, who fell from the sky of all things, but Irida points out that we risked our life in order to quell all of the frenzied nobles. Irida explains that Gaeric cares deeply for the Pearl Clan, and was hesitant about getting involved with both the Diamond Clan and the Galaxy Team, but that your actions have demonstrated the power people can have when they collaborate with Pokémon.
Adaman and Sabi arrive to thank us for quelling the last noble Pokémon, and everyone hopes that this will close the space-time rift and help things settle down and return to normal, with Adaman and Irida even acquiescing slightly to the other’s point of view.
With that, our adventures in the Alabaster Icelands are all wrapped up for now, but we are free to explore the area. With a number of high level Pokémon in the area, the Icelands are a great location for training and levelling up your party of choice, and while the powerful alpha Pokémon are very difficult to catch, doing so will give you a powerful option you can immediately add to your team, although bear in mind that only Pokémon up to level 65 will obey you in battle until you increase your rank in the Galaxy Team. Once you’re happy with the progress you’ve made advancing research for the Pokédex, check in with Professor Laventon at one of the base camps to show him your progress and receive the payout from your survey reports, before returning back to Jubilife Village.
