Walkthrough:Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl/Part 25

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
These pages follow the remade Nintendo Switch iteration, not Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The guide for those games can be found here.

Twinleaf Town

After defeating Cynthia and becoming the Champion of Sinnoh, you will return to your hometown of Twinleaf Town after the credits.

Go down the stairs and your Mom tells you that Barry is looking for you.

The post-game content includes the Ramanas Park to catch legendary Pokémon, participate in Gym Leader rematches with stronger teams, and visit the Battle Zone for high-level competitive battles. But to access all of these we first need to unlock the National Pokédex.

Unlocking the National Pokédex

The National Pokédex is required to access most post-game content. In order to receive it, you first need to view all 150 Pokémon of the Sinnoh Pokédex. If you followed this guide and battled most trainers encountered, you should be missing only the Lake Guardians (see section below).

Here are some of the few Pokémon that are more tricky to view or easily missed:

  • Drifloon
  • Unown: wild encounter inside Solaceon Ruins
  • Riolu:
    • Trainer battle in Oreburgh Gate B1F
    • Hatch the egg received from Riley after clearing Iron Island
  • Wooper: wild encounter inside the great marsh
  • Dialga/Palkia: you can see the other version exclusive by talking to Cynthia's grandmother in Celestic Town after encountering your own version exclusive at the Spear Pillar

We also need to view (and capture) the lake guardians.

Catching the Lake Guardians

After defeating Cynthia and entering the Hall of Fame, you now have access to all three Lake Guardian Pokémon. These legendary Psychic-type Pokémon were scattered across Sinnoh during Team Galactic's invasion. Each guardian can now be encountered and caught at the location where it was previously encountered during the main story.

Azelf

Azelf can be found in Valor Cavern beneath the now-refilled Lake Valor. The water level has been restored to normal, and Azelf has returned to its sanctuary.

Azelf is a Psychic-type legendary with the Levitate ability, making it immune to Ground-type moves. Use Ultra Balls, Timer Balls, or Dusk Balls for capture attempts. Weaken its HP to the red zone and apply sleep or paralysis status to improve capture chances.

Uxie

Uxie resides in Lake Acuity, the northern-most lake of Sinnoh.

Mesprit

Mesprit can be found in Acuity Cavern in the middle of Lake Acuity. However, upon interacting with it, contrarirly to Uxie and Azelf, it will flee.

Mesprit is now roaming throughout Sinnoh and you need to chase it in order to battle it. Unlike Azelf and Uxie, Mesprit does not remain in a fixed location but instead travels across the region's routes. You will not be able to predict which route it appears on. You can see where Mesprit is currently by looking at the Pokétch Marking App. Rather than trying to follow Mesprit, the simplest solution is to keep switching back and forth between a road with tall grasses and a town or another road that don't have a connecting gate. Keep switching in and out of the road while looking at the Marking App.

Once Mesprit is on the same road as you, go in the tall grass to have an encounter. Note that it will flee after the first turn, requiring you to repeat the process several times to lower its health.

Azelf is a Psychic-type legendary with the Levitate ability, making it immune to Ground-type moves. Each encounter with Mesprit will cause it to flee, forcing you to search across multiple routes. Use Ultra Balls or Quick Balls after weakening its HP and applying sleep or paralysis status to improve capture chances.

Sandgem Town

Once you have seen the 150 Pokémon of the Sinnoh Pokédex, go to Sandgem Town and talk to Professor Rowan inside his laboratory. Professor Oak will come and upgrade your Pokédex to include Pokémon from all regions. After Oak leaves, Rowen will grant you the Poké Radar. This invaluable tool will help you locate and catch Pokémon with higher chance of being Shiny.

Upon exiting the lab, Roark will tell you about Gym Leader rematches.

Poké Radar

The Poké Radar is a key item that helps locate wild Pokémon in tall grass patches. After obtaining it, you can use it in any grass area to generate shaking grass patches.

How to Use

When activated in tall grass, the Poké Radar will generate four patches of shaking grass in concentric rings around your character. Walk into any of these patches to encounter a wild Pokémon. Different types of grass patches indicate different encounter types:

  • Normal shaking patches contain regular Pokémon encounters
  • Vigorously shaking patches indicate a Pokémon with a Hidden Ability (1/128 chance per patch, regardless of chain length)

Chain Mechanic

The primary feature of the Poké Radaris the chain system. By repeatedly encountering and defeating or catching the same Pokémon species in successive patches, you build a chain. The first Pokémon you encounter in a chain will always appear in subsequent patches, eliminating the risk of accidentally breaking the chain by encountering a different species.

Chains can be broken by:

  • Escaping from battle
  • Encountering a different Pokémon species
  • Using the bicycle
  • Leaving the area

A chain is strengthened each time you successfully encounter the species in a new patch. As your chain length increases, the probability of finding Shiny Pokémon significantly increases:

  • Chain 20+: At least 1 perfect Individual Value (IV)
  • Chain 30+: At least 2 perfect IVs
  • Chain 40+: At least 3 perfect IVs, and approximately 1% Shiny odds per patch
