A battlefield effect is a condition that affects all Pokémon on one or both sides of the battlefield during a Pokémon battle.

In the core series games

When a battlefield effect is activated, it targets either the user's side, the opposing side, or both sides of the battlefield.

Global battlefield effects

These effects are applied to all Pokémon on the battlefield, regardless of which side activated the effect.

Weather

There are a variety of weather conditions that can affect the battlefield. Each weather condition offers benefits and drawbacks to a variety of Pokémon types, moves, and Abilities. Only one weather condition can be active at a time, and activating another one will overwrite the previous.

Terrain

Main article: Terrain

Terrains are a type of battlefield effect that only affect grounded Pokémon. Like with weather, only one type of terrain may be present at a time, with any new terrain put in place overwriting the previous terrain.

Ally-side battlefield effects

These battlefield effects are applied to the user's side of the field.

Foe-side battlefield effects

These battlefield effects are applied to the foe's side of the field.
