i remember in the chronicle episode ""oaknapped"" tracey calls sparky...."o so 'miss little pikachu here must be sparky"..is it possible sparky's a girl?? Ritchie

Actually, I recall the phrase being "this little Pikachu must be Sparky". The word "this", of course, is gender-neutral. --Shiningpikablu252 21:27, 6 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
yes good point i probably just missed worded miss for this Ritchie

Gender...

I don't remember Puka having been said to be male,so I suppose it is refered to as male due to it's japanese name. What about Sparky,Leon is definatly a male name. Though,I do know people who do name female Pokemon male names, and vice versa Lovely Rose 23:32, 14 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

probably male, knowing that ritchie is a parallell to ash and the fact that a female pikachu has shown up in the anime. we know that ash's pikachu is male,so ritchie's sparky probably is male, too. - unsigned comment from Pikachu210 (talkcontribs)

First nicknamed Pokemon in the anime?

Is this true CuteShaymin (talk) 09:07, 23 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

I don't think so, I'm pretty sure a Raichu from EP069 had a nickname.--BigDocFan, Junior Admin Bulbapedia (talk) 09:52, 23 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
There's also Puka in EP067 --Thespeon196 (talk) 11:01, 23 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

I think Sparky is a male due to being shown in a BW flashback as having a male tail. Goyangi (talk) 05:52, 11 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Per the speculation policy, I'm not certain if we can claim that. Following the policy precisely as written, it would depend on whether a female Pikachu appeared sometime before said flashback, which from some brief browsing on my part I'm not sure if one did.
Sparky did also appear again briefly in Journeys, although at least from the image present on the article, the tail tip isn't visible. But it's possible our crop is just unfortunately framed for assessing the issue at hand; if its tail was shown fully in Journeys, that would be a definite clincher. From Ash's Pikachu: "The species' gender difference was first openly indicated in Beauties Battling for Pride and Prestige!, as Pikachu was disguised as a female by sticking a heart-shaped piece of paper on his tail." That's about 20 episodes prior to the one with the Sparky flashback. Storm Aurora (talk) 07:34, 11 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Checked the Journeys episode and the tip Sparky's tail doesn't get shown at all. Regarding its flashback appearance, the policy doesn't say at what capacity the appearance needs to be, so we could count it.--ForceFire 07:39, 11 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
I see. Strictly speaking, it's not exactly an appearance of the gender difference per se, but in my opinion an explicit acknowledgement that the difference exists is basically just as good. Driftin Soul (talk) 09:16, 11 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
