Candice, Maylene, and Platinum arrive at Spring Path, where they are supposed to meet Volkner. After they find Volkner, they tell him he is supposed to train them. Volkner is disappointing to hear that he is there to train, which isn't what he was told. Volkner then has his Raichu and Elekid use Discharge on Candice, Maylene, and Platinum, causing them to get injured.
Valkner then turns to leave, but Candice asks him what he heard. Volkner says he was disappointed, because Byron said he would be meeting a dangerous enemy there. They then explain that the enemy is Jupiter, a Commander from Team Galactic. They then tell Volkner that Jupiter just beat all three of them. Platinum then introduces herself and challenges Volkner to a battle to show him Jupiter's battle style.
First Platinum sends out Lopunny against Volkner's Elekid. Using its speed Lopunny mimics Sableye's Shadow Sneak attack and defeats Elekid. She then sends out her Rapidash against Volkner's Raichu. Rapidash uses its powerful flames to show him how Jupiter used her Tangrowth's vines to fight from a distance. Volkner, now impressed by Platinum's skills and interested in battling Jupiter, sends out his most powerful Pokémon, Electivire. Platinum counters with her powerhouse Empoleon. Empoleon uses Blizzard to show Volkner how Jupiter's Gastrodon used Blizzard as a shield. After the short battle Volkner decides to officially fight Platinum in a Gym battle, because he believes that if Platinum is able to get stronger and defeat him she will be able to beat Jupiter. Empoleon and Electivire then prepare to clash.
