The regular attack is an attack usable in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series.

Effect

The regular attack deals typeless damage and does not expend PP when used. It is usable by all Pokémon in addition to the four moves it can have.

It cannot be part of a linked move.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team, the regular attack's damage is calculated as a Physical Attack, using the user's Attack and the target's Defense stats.

If the player's team (including the Leader and all the Partner Pokémon) defeats an enemy Pokémon by using only regular attacks, the experience gained is half of the base value (rounded down). If at least one move was successfully used against the foe, or if the foe successfully used a move that targets itself or other enemy Pokémon, the experience gain is the full base value. However, if only linked moves are used, the experience gain is 1.5× the base value.

This applies to the regular attack as well as any Physical Attack move if the target has any of these status conditions:

  • Reflect halves the damage dealt to the target.
  • Counter causes the damage received to be fully dealt to the user as well.
  • Mini Counter causes ¼ of the damage received to be dealt to the user as well.
  • Vital Throw causes the user to be thrown away, except if the target faints from the attack.

If the target has the Ability Wonder Guard, the damage taken by the regular attack is reduced to 1.

If the user has the status condition Set Damage (caused by Doom Desire or Future Sight), the regular attack (or any damaging move) deals 35 damage, regardless of other multipliers.

If the target is frozen, it cannot be damaged by regular attacks (as well as being immune against most forms of damage).

Mirror Coat and Mirror Move do not reflect the regular attack. Technician does not increase the damage of the regular attack.

If certain IQ skills are currently active, the regular attack is affected:

  • Sure-Hit Attacker causes the regular attack to never miss.
  • Exclusive Move-User, when active on a Partner Pokémon, causes it never to use the regular attack.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky, the game mechanics from the previous games still apply unless otherwise stated.

If the user has the status condition Set Damage, the damage dealt is now 30 (unlike the 35 damage in previous games).

If the target has the status condition Metal Burst, half the damage received from the regular attack (or from any damaging move) is dealt to the surrounding enemies.

If the user has the Ability Normalize, the regular attack changes into Normal-type instead of typeless.

If the user has any of these Abilities, it is activated upon using a regular attack (using a move does not count):

  • Anticipation shows if the target has one or more moves that are super effective against the user.
  • Frisk identifies the target's held item (if any).

There is another IQ skill that affects regular attacks, in addition to the other IQ skills introduced in the previous games:

  • Quick Striker causes the user to strike the regular attack twice per turn.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon (WiiWare)

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, this move deals 5 HP damage regardless of stats.

Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, the standard attack cannot be used under normal circumstances. However, it may still be used by Pokémon which have no moves selected for use but still have PP in their moves preventing the use of Struggle.
