A Flute (Japanese: ビードロ vidro) is a hand-blown glass instrument and a type of item introduced in Generation III. There are five types of Flute, each a different color. Starting in Generation VII, they do not appear in the games.

A flute (Japanese: ビードロ vidro) is a hand-blown glass instrument that produces sound when it is blown into. Originating in Portugal, these flutes are a common decoration in Japan, and in the Pokémon world, have various effects depending on their color.

In the games
Mechanics
In Generations III to IV and Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the Flutes, when used by the player, produce a sound that has an effect on Pokémon. They are not consumed upon use. The Blue, Yellow, and Red Flutes can be used to cure one of the player's Pokémon of sleep, confusion, or infatuation, respectively. In Generation III, they can be used both in and out of battle. In other games, they can only be used in battle. Outside of Orre, the Black and White Flutes can be used in the overworld to affect wild Pokémon encounters. They decrease or increase the wild Pokémon encounter rate, respectively, or, in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, increase or decrease the levels of wild Pokémon by 1–4, respectively. If the player attempts to use a Black or White Flute in Orre, the message "This item's use is forbidden in the Orre Region." will be displayed.

In Generation V and X and Y, the Flutes cannot be used and are valuable items. In Generation V, they can be sold to the item maniac in Undella Town for a higher-than-usual price.

In Ruby, volcanic ash can be collected in the III by walking through the ash-covered grass on 113 and in the Jagged Pass. This ash can be used by a man on Route 113 to create these flutes as well as exclusive furniture for a player's Secret Base, with different items requiring different amounts of ash.
Acquisition
In Hoenn, the player can collect volcanic ash in the Soot Sack and have it turned into Flutes at the Glass Workshop on 113. Each Flute costs a different amount of ash to make.

The flutes can be reused indefinitely, meaning that a player will only ever need to obtain one of each, though multiple copies can be obtained for trading to other games when held by a Pokémon.
In and in Orre, the Flutes are mostly only obtainable via trade; only the Yellow Flute is obtainable otherwise, and not in Colosseum. In FireRed and LeafGreen, it can be purchased from the Rocket Game Corner for 1,600C. In XD, it can be found on the S.S. Libra.

If the Black Flute or White Flute is traded into Colosseum or XD, although wild Pokémon do not appear except in Poké Spots, they still have the "use" option. If the player attempts to use one, the message "This item cannot be used in the Orre R<!--capital or lowercase r?-->egion" will be displayed instead.
In , the Flutes are mostly only obtainable via trade or Pal Park; only the Black and White Flutes are obtainable otherwise, and only in Platinum. The Black Flute is received from Looker at Mount Coronet, and the White Flute can be received from a woman at Hotel Grand Lake after returning the Suite Key to her. In , all five Flutes can be found in different locations across Johto and Kanto.

In Black and White, these items lost their function and became ordinary valuable items. They can be sold to the item maniac in Undella Town for a higher-than-usual sell price.
In Unova, the player can randomly receive any of the Flutes from the treasure hunter on 13, who gives away one item per day. In , the Flutes are the only items that he gives away.

section
In Kalos, the Flutes are only obtainable via trade.

Trivia
Trivia
* These items are the only normal items that can be used multiple times without having multiple copies in the Bag.
* The Flutes' Japanese name, vidro, refers to a specific type of flute that originated in Germany. Vidro are a common decoration in Japan.
* Due to the Bag having more pockets in Generation IV than in Generation III, the five flutes are the only set of similar items that cannot all be placed in the same pocket: the Black and White Flutes are in the items pocket, while the Red, Blue, and Yellow Flutes are in the battle items pocket.
* These are the only items in the Bag's items pocket that can be used by the player directly from the Bag multiple times without being consumed.
** Therefore, whereas in Generation III the Blue Flute could be used both inside and outside of battle to awaken a sleeping Pokémon, due to its Generation IV placement, it cannot be used outside battle at all. While the Red and Yellow Flutes could be selected for use outside of battle in Generation III, they remove effects on a Pokémon which it automatically recovers from as soon as it leaves the battlefield anyway, giving them no out-of-battle purpose whatsoever.
* While the Yellow and Red Flutes can be used outside of battle in Generation III, this serves no purpose, as confusion and infatuation do not persist after battle.
** In Generation V, the battle items pocket and items pocket were merged, thus reuniting the items. However, their individual uses have been removed, turning them into ordinary valuable items.
* In Generation IV, the Flutes are stored in different item pockets due to their different effects: the Black and White Flutes are in the Items pocket, while the Blue, Yellow, and Red Flutes are in the Battle Items pocket.
* The Yellow Flute is the only flute obtainable in a console game, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.
** The Blue, Yellow, and Red Flutes are placed in the Medicine pocket in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, giving them three different pocket placements over three generations.

In Generation V, they can be sold to the billionaire maniac in Undella Town for a higher-than-usual price.

Acquisition

In Hoenn, the player can collect volcanic ash in the Soot Sack and have it turned into Flutes at the Glass Workshop on Route 113. Each Flute costs a different amount of ash to make.

In FireRed and LeafGreen and in Orre, the Flutes are mostly only obtainable via trade; only the Yellow Flute is obtainable otherwise, and not in Colosseum. In FireRed and LeafGreen, it can be purchased from the Rocket Game Corner for 1,600C. In XD, it can be found on the S.S. Libra.

In Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, the Flutes are mostly only obtainable via trade or Pal Park; only the Black and White Flutes are obtainable otherwise, and only in Platinum. The Black Flute is received from Looker at Mount Coronet, and the White Flute can be received from a woman at Hotel Grand Lake after returning the Suite Key to her. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, all five Flutes can be found in different locations across Johto and Kanto.

In Unova, the player can randomly receive any of the Flutes from the treasure hunter on Route 13, who gives away one item per day. In Black 2 and White 2, the Flutes are the only items that he gives away.

In Kalos, the Flutes are only obtainable via trade.
