Grafaiai (Japanese: タギングル Taginguru) is a dual-type Poison/Normal Pokémon introduced in Generation IX.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology

Grafaiai is described as being moody with a fastidious nature for details. It prefers to travel alone. As a result, it often gets into territory fights with other Pokémon. Grafaiai uses a poison saliva to either slash foes or spit at them. The color of the saliva's poison varies depending on diet. Should Grafaiai sense danger, its poison becomes a concerted toxin that can immobilize a victim for about three days once absorbed. Grafaiai is nocturnal, only active during the night. Durning the night, it licks its hands and fingers with poison in order to draw patterns on trees. This not only marks Grafaiai's territory, it draws in Bug-type Pokémon with its sweet scent. This leaves the prey trapped until Grafaiai goes to collect it during dawn.[1]

Trivia

  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Grafaiai.
  • Grafaiai was first teased[2] on August 29th, 2022 through the official Pokémon Twitter account by showing pictures of the patterns it paints. It got a second teaser[3] on August 30th, 2022 showing it as an obscured shadow before being properly revealed[4] on September 1st, 2022.

Origin

Grafaiai may have been based on the aye-aye and a graffiti artist.

Name origin

Grafaiai may be a combination of graffiti and aye-aye.

Taginguru may be a combination of tagging (form of graffiti signature) and 猿 saru (monkey).
