Route 6 is a medium sized north-south path located in central Kanto. Its northern terminus is at Saffron City and its southern end is at Vermilion City. In the games prominently featuring Kanto, the thirsty guard at the lookout station that separates Saffron from Route 6 will not let anyone pass through to Saffron until someone gets them a drink (Tea in Generation III; Lemonade, Water, or Soda Pop in Generation I) from the Celadon Department Store located in Celadon City.
Route description
Route 6 is a medium sized pathway that curves around to form a "S" shape with tall grass surrounding the route to form the shape. In the middle of the route there is a large pond that expands out and forms the pathway heading though the route. Heading south from the lookout station, the route turns to the southwest before following a path that is bordered by grass for most of the route. After intersecting a path that leads to the Underground Path's south entrance, the route travels south, turning to the east ahead of a large pond and returning south along the pond's eastern shore. The route then doubles back to the west along the south side of the pond before turning south for the final time just north of the Vermilion City limits.

Differences among generations
The route is identical in Generations I and III.
In Generation II, the route was drastically shortened and the pond was cut in half length-wise. Also, there are no Trainers on the route in Pokémon Gold and Silver (There are 2 in Crystal and 4 in HeartGold and SoulSilver).
In Generation IV, the length of the route remains relatively the same as Generation III except for a few minor cosmetic changes. The pond remains the same as Generations I and III but a small amount of it was cut in length and replaced with tall grass to the left. The bottom area to the left of the path is covered with tall grass. The ledges to the right of the guard house are no longer present.
In the Pokémon Adventures manga
Route 6 made a brief appearance in Kalling Kadabra in the Red, Green & Blue Chapter, where Blue was not allowed in to Saffron City via guardhouse.
