Now that the Hoenn League Tournament is over Ash says goodbye to his rivals Morrison and Tyson and leaves Ever Grande City. After spending one last night together, Ash's group breaks up with May and Max returning to their hometown of Petalburg City. Ash and Brock take a ferry to Kanto and then split up from there to return to their respective hometowns. While Jessie, James, and Meowth return to headquarters, on his way through Viridian City Ash meets a mysterious man named Scott, and learns of the Battle Frontier. Also finding the Viridian Gym rebuilt he meets its temporary leader and Elite Four member Agatha, who after learning of his accomplishments, challenges Ash to a battle.
However despite his best efforts his Pikachu is outmatched against Agatha's Gengar. After dealing with Team Rocket afterwards, Ash decides to take up Scott's offer to head to the Battle Frontier. First though Ash returns to Pallet Town with a surprise; Misty is at his house. Ash is introduced to Misty's Azurill and finds that Professor Oak is also at his house. At that moment, someone pulls up to the house. Ash opens the door, only to find Professor Birch and Max waiting for him.

Trivia
- Agatha makes her anime debut, meaning that all the members of the original Elite Four of Kanto from Generation I have appeared in the series. This also makes Ash and Pikachu the only known characters to have met all of them.
- Jessie talks about Antarctica, the place where their next assignment is located. She doesn't appear to know that it is the coldest, driest, and windiest of all seven continents.
- This is the last episode to feature Ted Lewis as Giovanni (until The Thief That Keeps on Thieving!), Andi Whaley as Cassidy, and Eric Stuart as Butch.
- When James says "Castle in the Sky," he makes a reference to the Studio Ghibli film.
- The English title of this episode is a pun on the term "the dream team".
- After parting ways with Max and May, Ash and Brock walk to Kanto from Hoenn. However, according to the maps of Kanto and Hoenn, the two regions are not connected by land or bridge. How they managed to walk from Littleroot Town to Pallet Town and Pewter City in under a day is unknown. Additionally, Professor Birch and Max are shown arriving at Ash's home at the end with his jeep, within hours of Max's return home.
- Despite it featuring in over 100 episodes in multiple seasons, this is the first time that the Kanto region has ever been named in the anime. It was mentioned by Scott in his explanation of the Battle Frontier (which he stated was "throughout the Kanto region"). The region's name had never previously been mentioned.
