Torkoal has a habit of crying and releasing smoke from it's nostrals and back when it is happy. It will usually do this everytime its released from it's Poké Ball and when it wins a battle. It is quite an emotional individual and very friendly towards people and other Pokémon. It has a slight comic element to it, most notabily when it tried to play a soccer carival game in Manectric Charge!.

Ash caught Torkoal in the episode All Torkoal, No Play!. Ash and his friends were traveling through the Valley of Steel when they saw a lone Torkoal being attacked by a Skarmory and many Magneton. After Ash saved it, Torkoal burst into tears and then ran away after hearing the sound of a Steelix. Later, Ash helped it defeat the Steelix that ruled over the valley and Torkoal decided to join him.

Torkoal is very emotional. It bursts into tears for even the smallest of reasons. Torkoal gets along with everyone. It has only been used in one Gym battle, against Norman and his Slakoth. However, it has had many battles against other trainers and has been quite successful, such as when it defeated a Scizor in Vanity Affair. Torkoal also seemed to have a friendship with the Spoink that appeared to Ash's group on a few occasions and also giving it assistance.
Torkoal first appeared in All Torkoal, No Play. The gang found Torkoal in the Valley of Steel being attacked by a group of Magnemite and a Skarmory, after the group of Steel Pokémon left it thanked Ash and ran off. Torkoal was later found being attacked by the same Pokémon again, with the help of Pikachu, May's May and May, Torkoal made the other Pokémon flee, however it fainted afterwards. After Brock nursed it back to full health, it heard a roar echo through the valley and again ran off incredably fast. Later, Torkoal, once again with the gang, fended of a wild Magneton while May rescued Torchic from a long fall off of a cliff. As they reach the end of the valley, a Steelix revealed itself as the leader of the Steel types in the valley and began a battle with Torkoal. Despite the type disadvantage, Steelix is able to dominate the battle. Ash thought back to Flannery's Torkoal and then commanded it to use Overheat. Steelix was then defeated, before the other Steel types attacked, Steelix got up and issued respect to Torkoal. Ash then asked Torkoal if it wanted to join his team, Torkoal agreed to the idea and tackled Ash to the ground.

In the next episode, Ash introduced Torkoal to the rest of the gang's Pokémon which it greets by releasing smoke from it's nostrals. Later, in Ash's battle with Wattson, Torkoal was chosen to battle Wattson. After a long fight, Torkoal's first battle ended with a loss.

Torkoal's first gym battle was agaist Norman in Balance of Power. Ash chose it first to battle Slakoth after Pikachu was recalled, beating it with a single Flamethrower. Torkoal was then defeated by a single Slash attack from Norman's Vigoroth.

In Pearls are a Spoink's Best Friend, Torkoal befriended a Spoink and along with Ash and the gang, helped it to recover it's lost pearl. They were later reunited in Clamperl of Wisdom when Torkoal was floating on the ocean.

Torkoal was used several times in the Ever Grande Conference. In From Brags to Riches, Torkoal and Corphish battled Dominick's Tropius and Swalot. After a collision of Torkoal's Overheat and Tropius's Solarbeam, both Pokémon were out of the battle. later in Shocks and Bonds it battled Katie's Venomoth before Katie recalled her Pokémon and defeated Torkoal with her Golduck. Then in Ash's battle with Morrison in Choose It or Lose It!, Torkoal was bruitly defeated by Morrison's Steelix. Finalley, in At the End of the Fray, Torkoal battled Tyson's Shiftry and won only to be defeated by Hariyama.

Ash also used Torkoal in the Ever Grande Conference.
In The Right Place and the Right Mime Torkoal met the rest of Ash's Pokémon back in Kanto at Proffeser Oak's labrotory. After Ash decided to challenge the Battle Frontier, he left Torkoal and Glalie with the rest of his Pokémon.

Afterward, Ash left Torkoal at Professor Oak's lab, as he wanted to challenge the Battle Frontier. It reappeared for Ash's second battle against Pyramid King's Brandon's Regis, where Ash swapped his Aipom for Torkoal. With the newly learned move Heat Wave, Torkoal was able to put up a fight against Registeel but eventually it lost. After the battle, Ash sent Torkoal back to Professor Oak's lab.
Torkoal was brought back to Ash's team in Overjoyed! to battle Brandon's Brandon. Torkoal battled quite well agaist the ledgendary Pokémon, it was even revealed to of learned Heat Wave, however after being hit by a strong Zap Cannon, Torkoal was beaten and Ash lost his second match with Brandon.

It reppeared in An Old Family Blend!, alongside Ash's other Pokémon. It helped thaw out Ash after Glalie used Ice Beam on him out of affection with Flamethrower. In DP189, Ash used it in the battle against Tobias in the semi-finals of the Lily of the Valley Conference. It used Flamethrower, which collided with Tobias's Darkrai's Dark Pulse; however, the attack was not strong enough and Torkoal was defeated in a matter of seconds.
Torkoal was sent back to Ash at the Lily of the Valley Conference in An Old Family Blend!, after Glalie froze Ash with Ice Beam, it helped to thaw him out. It was Ash's second Pokémon to battle Tobias's Darkrai in DP189. It launched a Flamethrower that was countered by a powerful Dark Pulse wich wiped out Torkoal upon contact.

    • Of the three, Torkoal is the only one who isn't a starter.
      • Also, Torkoal has been the least used of the three.
    • Torkoal is also Ash's only Template:Type2 Pokémon that is not a starter Pokémon.
  • Torkoal is the only one of Ash's Fire-type Pokémon not to be owned or attempted to be captured by another Trainer. Like the others, however, Torkoal was saved by Ash.
  • Torkoal was the 30th Pokémon species Ash ever owned, counting Haunter, Larvitar, and Raticate.
  • Torkoal was the first of Ash's Pokémon to be featured on a TCG card.
