He and his friends were confronted by Red Lightning, who challenged them to a Pokémon battle. Despite his friends' warnings, Hiroshi accepted and called out his Poliwag. Red Lightning won quickly, however, and scribbled on Poliwag's face afterwards. When he took Poliwag to the Pokémon Center, he ran into Ash and his friends, which alerted them to Red Lightning's antics.
