History

Brock caught Forretress as a Pineco near Azalea Town with one of Kurt's Fast Balls while trying to pick Apricorns. Later in Brock's journey through Johto, Pineco evolved at a hot spring while trying to save a herd of wild Pokémon from Team Rocket.

As a Pineco, with Brock

Forretress had some character development. As a Pineco, it was very surly and temperamental and tended to blow itself up and Brock along with it. After it evolved into Forretress, it seemed to like Brock more, and began to act loyally. After Brock gave his brother Forrest most of his Pokémon, Forretress was the only Pokémon Brock took with him to Hoenn.

Forretress got a fair amount of screentime for one of Brock's Pokémon, as it was regularly featured throughout most of the later Johto episodes and much of early Hoenn. However, it took a backseat to Ludicolo and Mudkip after the midpoint of the Hoenn series. It is also the first Steel-type Pokémon a main anime character has had, and, up until Brock's Onix evolved, the only one.

Forretress was left at the Pewter Gym when Brock headed to Sinnoh and met up with Ash.

Trivia

  • Before leaving it in Pewter City when he left for Sinnoh, Forretress had been in Brock's party longer than any other main character's Pokémon except Pikachu and Meowth, including the time when it was a Pineco. This record was matched and subsequently broken 3 episodes later by Jessie's Wobbuffet.
  • Though it is not a Hoenn-native Pokémon, it was the only Pokémon Brock brought with him to Hoenn. At the time, Brock had both Geodude and Crobat with him and at one point had a Vulpix; they are native to Hoenn. Later on, Pineco became somewhat Hoenn-native, as it was available in the Safari Zone extension found in Pokémon Emerald.
  • This is the first and only Bug-type Pokémon Brock has owned.
