Lugia (Japanese: ルギア Lugia) is a legendary Psychic/Flying-type Pokémon. It is often considered to be closely related to Ho-oh, even sometimes as its polar opposite, represented by silver as Ho-oh is represented by gold, and "guardian of the seas" as Ho-oh is "guardian of the skies".

In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Pokémon Crystal, it appears in the deepest cavern of the Whirl Islands, under the ocean floor, when the games' hero/heroine enters with a Silver Wing, one of its feathers. However, the means of obtaining the Silver Wing differ between the three versions.

In Pokémon FireRed, LeafGreen, and Pokémon Emerald, Lugia is encountered on Navel Rock, a barren rock in the center of the Sevii Islands, along with Ho-oh. To reach Navel Rock via a Seagallop Ferry, one must have the Mysticticket, a promotional item transferred to the game via events such as the annual Pokémon Rocks America tours.

In Pokémon XD, Shadow Lugia, codenamed XD001, is a main part of the storyline, and Cipher's ultimate Shadow Pokémon. Near the end of the game's main story, the player will be able to snag the evil Lugia and eventually purify it-- given the battle against Greevil is won.

Lugia comes with the Ability Pressure, which causes the foe to use two PP instead of one each time it uses a move.

Lugia's signature move is Aeroblast.

Biology

Physiology

Lugia is a large, white bird/plesiosaur creature that has a blue underside, two blue spikes on its tail, six blue plates on its back, two blue fins on its face and it wings look like arms with five-fingered hands. Lugia is depicted as the ruler over the the Kanto Ledgendary Bird Trio. Due to a somewhat similar appearance, it may be related to Latios and {{p|Latias}.

Gender differences

Lugia is genderless.

Special abilities

Lugia is so powerful that if it even lightly flutters its wings, it creates winds that can blow down houses. In fact, Lugia can control several different types of elements, except Fire.

Lugia is the only Pokémon so far that can learn Aeroblast.

Behavior

Habitat

Lugia lives deep in the ocean, not because it is a natural sea-dweller, but because it fears that it could accidentaly cause untold devestation.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

In the anime

Three Lugia have appeared in the anime: a large Lugia from the second movie near Shamouti Island in the Orange Islands, and a father Lugia and its child Lugia "Silver" in Silver Rock Isle in the Whirl Islands. In both cases a human has attempted to capture them: Lawrence III attempted to capture the large Lugia for himself, inadvertently threatening the world's balance in the process; and Dr. Namba, attempting to capture both the father Lugia and Silver for Giovanni. Both were foiled by Ash and his friends.

In the manga

In the TCG

In the TFG

Other appearances

Super Smash Brothers Melee

When released from a Poké Ball, Lugia will fly up and return in the background where it unleashes a powerful Aeroblast on the stage.

Trivia

Origin

Lugia is based on either the Halcyon.

Name origin

Lugia's name may come from lutetium, a silverish element. Possibly also lugeo, meaning to lie dormant, alluding to the way Lugia lies at the bottom of the sea. The Lu- may come from luna, meaning moon.
