Trivia
- Dunsparce learns many moves usually assigned to a specific type: it's the only non-Template:Type2 Pokémon to learn Roost by level up, the only non-Template:Type2 to learn Glare, the only non-Template:Type2 to learn Spite, and the only non-Template:Type2 to learn Dig by leveling up.
- Though several of Dunsparce's Pokédex entries mention it burrowing into the ground using its tail, it could not learn Dig by leveling up until Generation IV.
- Dunsparce is one of two Pokémon that can be found through HM means other than Surf. This only applies to HeartGold and SoulSilver, and with the move Rock Smash. The other is Nosepass in Generation III using the same move.
Origin
Dunsparce is based on the mythical tsuchinoko. Tsuchinoko are 30 cm to 80 cm long, with a large head and poisonous fangs. Its body is thicker than its head and tail. The noises it makes resemble squeaks, chirps and snores. Unlike real snakes, which slither from side to side, a tsuchinoko wiggles ahead in a straight line. The tsuchinoko curls its body to leap through the air. Moreover, the fact that Dunsparce, a snake-like creature, has wings also brings to mind the motif of the Feathered Serpent, a prominent deity or supernatural being in many Mesoamerican religions. In addition, Dunsparce shares some traits with bumblebees, including their stripes, tiny wings, and stinger-like tail.
Name origin
ノコッチ comes from つちのこ tsuchinoko, a fabled snake creature. The characters are swapped to be のこっち.
Dun can mean grayish yellow or gloomy, and sparse refers to rarity. Dunsparce's name could also be a combination of dunce meaning dull-witted, stupid, or an ignorant person, a dolt, and sparse, which can mean meager.
In other languages
- German: Dummisel - Includes dumm (stupid).
- French: Insolourdo - From insolent and lourdeau (graceless).
- Korean: 노고치 Nogochi
