Heracross (Japanese: ヘラクロス Heracros) is a dual-type Bug/Fighting Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology

Physiology

Heracross are large beetle-like Pokémon covered in a blue exoskeleton. The most notable feature is a large horn which they use to defend themselves or to simply show their power.

Gender differences

A female Heracross's horn has a heart-like shape at the end, whereas the male's end in an 'X' shape.

Special abilities

It is surprisingly strong for its size, much like real-world insects.

Behavior

Heracross live in groups in deep forests. They bite through the bark of trees with their strong jaws to get to the sweet sap inside. This suggests a relation to fellow bug-type, Pinsir, who share many of the same habits. Heracross's eating habits unwittingly enter them into a symbiotic relationship with Butterfree, who also love tree sap, but lack the strength to get to it. Despite their size, great strength, and powerful horns, Heracross are really docile creatures who prefer peace over resorting to violence.

Habitat

Heracross prefer to live in deep forests, where there are many trees for them to suck sap from.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Heracross's preferred diet is mainly made up of sap and other plant juices. This makes them unpopular among grass-type Pokémon like Ash's Bulbasaur, as Heracross often try to suck nourishment from them. This makes them easy to attract with Honey.

In the anime

Ash and Heracross in the anime

Heracross first appeared in A Sappy Ending. Groups of Pinsir and Heracross were having a dispute due to the fact that Team Rocket was siphoning all the tree sap from the Pinsir side of the forest. One Heracross decided to help Ash and his friends for this crisis. Ash captured Heracross at the end of the episode.

Ash sent Heracross back to Professor Oak's lab in Tricks Of The Trade in exchange for his Tauros, at Oak's request.

A Heracross appeared in All in a Day's Wurmple, under the ownership of Forrest Franklin.

In Absol-ute Disaster, a Heracross was owned by a teenager named Gordon. Gordon's Heracross saved Ash's Pikachu from falling while Ash's Swellow was busy saving Max from falling and it helped Absol and Ash's, May's and Brock's Pokémon, with a long-range attack, pushed a boulder in order to stop a flood.

A Heracross appeared in Smells Like Team Spirit! under the ownership of Dawn's tag battle partner, Conway.

In the manga

Pokémon Special

Heracross is first seen in Template:PSV. While Silver is communicating with Blue, he stands in a full shot of Sprout Tower with a bunch of Johto Pokémon in the background, Heracross being one of them.

Heracross is later seen as one of the Pokémon under Bugsy's control.

Other appearances

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Heracross only appears as a random trophy.

Trophy information

Heracross are powerful creatures that are known to drive their single horns into the bellies of their foes and then toss them over their heads. The immense power of their Megahorn move is said to be the strongest among Bug Pokémon. They are one of several types of Pokémon that can be found by shaking trees.

Trivia

  • Heracross is the only Template:Type2 Pokémon to learn Megahorn, even though Megahorn is a Bug-type move. The reason for this may be that when Megahorn was introduced in Generation II, it was exclusive to Heracross.
  • Since its debut in Generation II, Heracross has been featured in all regional Pokédexes.
  • In 2007, employees of Nintendo of America put Heracross up on the Global Trade Station for Japanese Roselia.
  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Heracross.
  • Heracross is one of fourteen Pokémon that one could collect foreign Pokédex entries for in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.
  • In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Heracross can use both of its abilities: Guts and Swarm. When both are activated, Heracross' Bug-type moves, such as Megahorn, gain terrifying power.
  • Scizor's cry seems to be a modified version of that of Heracross. This usually happens only with Pokémon related by evolution.
  • Heracross is the only Fighting-type Pokémon to not have an evolutionary relative.

Origin

Heracross is most likely based on the kabutomushi, a very popular species of rhinoceros beetle found in Japan and other parts of Asia. These beetles are known for their use in insect fighting, which explains its Template:Type2.

It may also be based on the elephant beetle or the Hercules beetle, both of which live in the rainforests of Central and South America.

  • Being based off of one of these beetles would explain its high Attack stat; these beetles are (weight-for-weight) the strongest animals in the world, capable of lifting over 850 times their own weight.

Name origin

Heracross's name is a combination of Hercules, or Heracles, and the word cross. This Pokémon is based on the Hercules beetle, hence the first part of its name. However, its appearance is obviously based on the common species in Japan.

In other languages

  • French: Scarhino - Combination of scarabée (scarab), and rhino as in rhino beetle.
  • Korean: 헤라크로스 Herakeuroseu
