Plot

Similar to Pokémon Red and Green, this episode begins with Professor Oak introducing himself as well as the world of Pokémon. He explains that the world is inhabited by creatures known as Pokémon and that people use them as pets and for fights. After releasing an Eevee from its Poké Ball, he invites the audience to the world of Pokémon.

The scene changes to a battle between a Gengar and Nidorino that is being watched by Red. His mom tells him that Professor Oak wants to see him in his lab. Excited, Red falls down the stairs but quickly gets back up and runs over to Professor Oak's lab. In front of the lab, Red meets up with Blue, Professor Oak's grandson and Red's rival, who also was called down to the lab. They race in as Professor Oak greets them. He hands them both a Pokédex, a high-tech encyclopedia of Pokémon, which he's been working on. He asks them both to fulfill his dream of making a complete guide on all Pokémon.

In exchange for doing this, Professor Oak allows the boys to have one of three Pokemon: Charmander, Squirtle, or Bulbasaur. Blue lets Red pick first. Red picks Charmander as his first Pokémon and Blue goes with Squirtle after what Red picked. Professor Oak asks if they would like to nickname either of their Pokémon but they both decline. Blue teases Red about wanting his first battle to be memorable instead of battling a novice like Red. Blue goes on to explain how he wants to be the greatest Pokémon Trainer in the world. Red begins his journey shortly afterward.

Walking down the road, Red encounters a Pidgey. He starts to battle it but is quickly overwhelmed and fails to capture it. However his next battle against a Rattata is successful and he catches the Rattata, as well as a Spearow, Caterpie, and a Pidgey. The scene moves to him battling a Youngster trainer in a forest. The Youngster trainer sends out a Nidoran♀. After attacking, Red tries to capture the Nidoran♀ but the Poké Ball is rejected. The Youngster trainer explains that he can't just catch other people's Pokémon and points him in the direction where Nidoran♀ was found.

Red makes it close to Viridian City where he runs into Blue. Blue challenges Red to a battle and after some hesitation, Red accepts the challenge. Blue sends out Squirtle and Red sends out Charmander. Charmander is at a disadvantage from the beginning as Squirtle dodges every attack and overpowers Charmander. The battle finishes with Blue as the clear victor as he tells Red to get stronger or he'll never finish the Pokédex.

  • When Charmander is bitten, the scream it made in the original version has been muted. It is this way in all non-Japanese versions.
  • The timeline for all of the games prior to Oak's introduction has been removed from non-Japanese versions as well.
