Jubilife Village

On your return to Jubilife Village you’ll be greeted by Beni, who has deduced that you were able to track down Arezu by the scent of the mochi she’d eaten, before he then suggests you visit the Commander to report your progress. Kamado congratulates you on your efforts, though he still feels the space-time rift requires more observation to find out if your motives really are honest.

You've completed Arezu’s Predicament!

You, Rei/Akari, and Laventon all congregate at the Wallflower for another helping of Beni’s potato mochi, where you’ll be given the recipe for crafting Scatter Bangs, a thrown item that startles Pokémon and is necessary for certain research tasks. After you finish eating it’s back to our quarters for a good night’s rest.

The next day you’ll be awoken by Arezu, who’s started working as a hairdresser, alongside her role as a warden. Kamado welcomes her to Jubilife Village, before summoning you to Prelude Beach. The beach has some new arrivals who’ll become a part of the village, just as the Galaxy Team were when they first landed here. Kamado is thankful for the efforts of the Survey Corps in making a more habitable place to live, but does issue a slightly ominous warning that if that begins to stop there will be consequences. Rei arrives to tell the Commander that Irida has arrived to talk to him, and Kamado suggests looking around the village now that it has expanded before coming to see him.

Visit Commander Kamado in his office, where he and Irida are waiting for you. Your next task, he tells you, is to survey the Cobalt Coastlands, although there are no noble Pokémon there. Irida elaborates that the previous noble passed away a few years ago, but people have been seeing strange shadows in his former home, with reports of attacks by mysterious ghosts. It’s up to us to investigate what’s really been going on, and we receive our next mission: The Lordless Island.

You’ll be sent downstairs to talk to Cyllene, and if you’re at least a Third Star Member she’ll grant you access to the Cobalt Coastlands. Don’t worry if you’re not there yet - you can head back to one of the earlier areas and complete research tasks until you reach the requisite rank.

Once you’re ready, head to the front gate where you’ll run into Lian, who’ll give some information about Evolution items, and give you two Grit Pebbles, and three bags of Grit Gravel, after which you’ll be able to visit the Coastlands.

Items

Cobalt Coastlands

You and Professor Laventon arrive at the Cobalt Coastlands, where Irida’s in position awaiting your arrival, but before you can go further you’ll have to face her in battle, so make sure you’re prepared before talking to her (although you don’t have to win to advance).

Winning this battle is not mandatory, as the story will progress either way.

After the battle Irida will heal up your party, before telling you about the Warden in the Coastlands, Palina. Palina has not been able to raise a new noble Pokémon yet, and Irida wants your help to raise the previous lord’s heir to take his place. Irida points you in the right direction, before she departs.

Veilstone Cape

Hop on Wyrdeer, and ride to the farthest point of Veilstone Cape, making sure to complete some research tasks on the way for your Pokédex so you can increase your rank. At the end of the path you’ll find Palina waiting with two Growlithe. She’ll explain how the previous lord, Arcanine, gave his life to stop his young offspring from drowning, before asking you a question - which Growlithe is the child in question? It’s actually the smaller, quieter, more skittish of the two, and although he might eventually have the potential to become a fine lord, he obviously carries scars from his father’s passing.

Palina, much to the chagrin of the rest of the Pearl Clan, refuses to push Growlithe before it’s healed and ready. She’ll ask why you’re here - tell her it’s to go to Firespit Island to investigate the goings on, and Palina will tell you that you’ll need the help of a Pokémon called Basculegion to cross the sea. In order to do that, you’ll need to speak to a Diamond Clan warden named Iscan. You can find Iscan on Aipom Hill, on the other side of the Cobalt Coastlands, which is helpfully marked on your map; either ride all the way back, or fly back to camp to cut out half of your journey.

Iscan

Over at Aipom Hill you’ll be met not by Iscan, but by Volo. It turns out he’s been plate hunting, hoping to gather more information about Hisui and almighty Sinnoh’s past. He’ll bid you goodbye, leaving you free to enter Iscan’s home. Well, try to, anyway, as a rather nervous sounding Iscan will come outside to greet you. Explain that you need Basculegion’s help so that you can visit Firespit Island, and Iscan will tell you that we’ll need its favorite food, but sadly it’s nearly impossible to prepare. Iscan has the materials, but we’ll need to catch a specific Pokémon - Dusclops.

Thankfully we’re nowhere near as afraid as Iscan is, so we can happily head to Deadwood Haunt to catch one, providing that it’s nighttime. As you head east through the hills, you’ll be stopped by a lady called Gully, who’s been looking for someone named Yorrich for the Construction Corps, and could do with your help, starting Request 46, Setting Up the Coastlands Camp. You can choose to continue with this now, or continue heading to the Deadwood Haunt to catch yourself a Dusclops.

Once you’ve captured a Dusclops, go back to Iscan and, while he’s not particularly enthused to see you’ve succeeded, he does hold up his end of the bargain, and with Dusclops’ help you successfully prepare a ball of Basculegion Food. The next step is to feed Basculegion, so Iscan will meet you at Ginkgo Landing, which is now marked on your map.

Meet Iscan on the beach at Ginkgo Landing, and Palina will arrive with her two Growlithe. Iscan is keen that the two of them not be seen together, but Palina wanted to meet Basculegion once more. Iscan uses his Celestica Flute to summon Basculegion, and after you feed it the ball of food, you play your own Celestica Flute for it and Basculegion gives you the Splash Plate. Palina will then reveal that Iscan and Basculegion saved her life in the incident where the previous lord perished, and that the two of them are secretly an item.

Miss Fortune Sisters

Before you can ride Basculegion, the Miss Fortune Sisters arrive to capture Growlithe as the lord in waiting, but as they do not know which Growlithe is which they assume the larger of the two is the one they need. They then abscond to Firespit Island where no-one can reach them. The problem is that with Basculegion we can cross the water now, and confront them on Firespit Island.

Riding Basculegion

You can summon Basculegion with the + button, as with the other ride Pokémon, as well as pressing A when you’re in the water. You can also jump while riding Basculegion using Y, jump a second time by pressing Y while in the air, and you’ll also still be able to throw Pokémon, items, and balls by using ZR as usual. Aiming to throw while in the air will also slow down time, allowing you to get the jump on wild Pokémon.

With the ability to ride Basculegion, we can now access areas we weren’t able to before, so explore the area as you see fit before heading to Firespit Island.

Firespit Island

When you reach Firespit Island, head up the path and Iscan will meet you there, although being his useful scared self he’ll let you lead the way forward in searching for the Miss Fortune Sisters. Traverse the path around the volcano until you reach Molten Arena, where you’ll find the sisters with Gengar, trying to get Growlithe to evolve. When you approach, the three of them will challenge you in turn in order to try and drive you away.

Best the three of them in battle, and the other Growlithe, the lord’s heir, arrives to give support, before Palina follows him to try and get him to stop. It seems Growlithe was determined to help, so swam across the sea, conquering its fears in the process. At this point a roar comes from the Volcano, which Growlithe answers, before evolving into Arcanine, embracing its destiny. At this point the space-time rift opens, striking the newly-evolved Arcanine with lightning, sending it into a frenzy.

Frenzied Arcanine

The Miss Fortune Sisters wisely scarper, scared off by the frenzied Pokémon, and you, Iscan, Palina, and the other Growlithe retreat as well to safety. Irida arrives at this time, and suggests using balms to calm Arcanine down. Iscan has the necessary ingredients to hand, and quickly whips up a batch of balms. When you’re confident your Pokémon are ready, approach the arena again to take on Arcanine.

The Frenzy of the Lord of the Isles

In order to calm the Arcanine, we must follow the same pattern as before - throw balms at the frenzied noble using ZR while dodging attacks by timing presses of the Y button.

Arcanine has two main patterns - a charge phase before attacking in a straight line through the middle of the arena, and a jumping attack that slams down in the arena’s center. The former is easier to time than the latter, especially as it covers a smaller area. Roughly halfway through Arcanine will charge five fireballs above its head, and one will disappear for each balm it is hit with, until all five disappear and it is stunned. If you are unable to do this in time, Arcanine will unleash a huge pillar of fire in the middle of the battlefield. Once you are able to break its guard, you can either continue throwing balms or send out a Pokémon to battle it.

After the halfway point Arcanine attacks with more ferocity, leaving a ring of flames in the center after its jump attack, forcing you to the edges of the arena, and making it difficult to hit from long range. Don’t worry if you black out - you can restart as many times as you wish, or continue the battle from the last marker in the frenzy bar.

Hisuian Arcanine is a Fire/Rock-type type, meaning it has a double weakness to both Water-type and Ground-type moves, and a regular weakness to Fighting-type and Rock-type attacks.

After lowering the frenzy gauge enough and hitting Arcanine with one final Volcano Balm, a brilliant light envelopes the Pokémon, as with the previous nobles, and its frenzy fades. Arcanine hands over the Flame Plate in recognition.

Palina wonders what could be on the other side of the rift, as the roar of a different Arcanine sounds, and Palina parts with the new lord Arcanine, who is now strong enough to carry out its duties. Iscan wonders whether the mysterious roar was that of the previous lord, and Palina, after denying it at first to play a joke on her partner, agrees that she believes it was, and it had been looking out for its child the whole time. Palina thanks you for looking after Arcanine, and asks that you do the same for Irida, as she and Iscan depart.

Irida wonders whether she is fit to be the leader of the Pearl Clan, having taken over at a young age without a clear plan for what she would do. Now, though, she understands that she wants to protect the lands and Pokémon of Hisui, and asks that you battle her again in future to help both of you get stronger.

With that, head back to a base camp to report your progress to Professor Laventon, and return to Jubilife Village to tell Commander Kamado about what’s happened in the Cobalt Coastlands.
