Talk:Wonder Guard (Ability)

Curious trivia

In at least Generation III, attempting to use a Normal or Fighting-type move on a Shedinja will yield "Shedinja avoided damage with Wonder Guard!" despite that the move would not be expected to have an effect on Shedinja's Ghost typing anyway.

In at least Generation VI, the game instead declares "It doesn't affect Shedinja...", with the type immunity taking priority over Wonder Guard.

I haven't tested what the games say in Gen IV or V, or if there are any further implications of the change in messages displayed. --Stratelier 07:38, 29 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

This also happens in Generation V. Not sure about Generation IV, though. Eridanus (talk) 13:59, 30 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
I just tested this in HeartGold against a Furret using Quick Attack. It said exactly this: "SHEDINJA avoided damage by using Wonder Guard!" --GuyPerfect (talk) 16:41, 13 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Wonder Guard + Ring Target

So, how would ring target work with the ability Wonder Guard? Does it simply make the immune moves (aka normal and fighting) hit for 1x damage, making them ineffective against Shedinja OR does it take every immunity granted by Wonder Guard and make Shedinja vulnerable? (Arcalargo (talk) 21:24, 10 May 2016 (UTC))Reply

The attacks would still have no effect on Shedinja, but let's say that someone gave Wonder Guard to a Spiritomb. If Spiritomb had a Ring Target, Fighting attacks become Super Effective and thus will not be protected by Wonder Guard. Unowninator (talk) 21:29, 10 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Stealth Rocks' effect on Wonder Guard

If a Pokémon with Wonder Guard isn't weak to the Rock type, will they still get hurt by Stealth Rocks? Gryphon827 (talk) 15:51, 28 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Well. . . .I can't prove it myself, but I think so. Wonder Guard doesn't prevent indirect damage, and I don't know if something with it can get hit by Spikes, but I know they can be hit by Toxic Spikes, so my guess is that Wonder Guard won't protect from all three.Qwertyo76 (talk) 16:24, 28 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

NPC Trainers switching to bypass Wonder Guard

I've observed NPC trainers switching Pokémon when the current Pokémon can't damage Shedinja in Pokémon Emerald. This is even with trainers who would not normally switch Pokémon. I would assume this behaviour is present in all later generations, although I have not yet tested this. I will also be looking to test this on Ruby and Sapphire to see if the older Generation 3 games have this behaviour.

There are also specific conditions that I'm keen to test but I lack the game knowledge to know how to set them up:

-is the amount of remaining PP considered when switching i.e. will the NPC switch to a Pokémon even if it has no PP left for moves that would bypass Wonder Guard?

-Will an NPC switch if they have no damaging moves available, but have a Pokémon that can inflict a damaging status?

-Will an NPC switch to a Pokémon that has a damaging ability, such as Rough Skin? Does it make a difference if the conditions for the ability cannot be met e.g. the Pokémon does not have any contact-type moves that would trigger Rough Skin?

-Will an NPC switch if a Pokémon other than Shedinja has Wonder Guard? Will it consider the typing of the new Pokémon, or does the game assume a Pokémon with Wonder Guard must be Bug/Ghost type? SadNoodleSoup (talk) 14:38, 26 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

So, in the Emerald Gym battle with Juan, he will not switch out his Luvdisc and instead always seems to use Sweet Kiss, presumably to inflict confusion. Which suggests that NPC trainers will attempt to inflict damaging statuses to get around Wonder Guard. I don't know if it's quite definitive enough yet though. In order to make a Wonder Guard switch, they need to have something in the back that can actually hit Shedinja. Juan doesn't. SadisticMystic (talk) 05:22, 27 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oh, yes you're right. I had my brain a little twisted around and was thinking that Taunt was a damaging move. SadNoodleSoup (talk) 14:01, 27 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
SadNoodleSoup I've seen modded gameplay videos from a user named Auke1993 in Pokémon Battle Revolution with a Sableye who had Wonder Guard the whole time, but I'm not quite sure if that really means anything though. DarkMatterMan4500 (talk) (contribs) 22:24, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
