TAG TEAM cards (Japanese: TAG TEAM(タッグチーム) TAG TEAM) are a classification of cards in the Pokémon Trading Card Game that were introduced in the Team Up expansion. TAG TEAM cards appear as either Pokémon-GX that feature two or three Pokémon, or as Supporter cards which feature two characters working together. Each TAG TEAM card has a team bonus, which is an optional effect added to the base effect of the card under certain circumstances.

TAG TEAM cards are distinguished by a TAG TEAM label below the card's name. TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX cards are considered cards with a Rule Box; however, TAG TEAM Supporter cards are not.

TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX

Moltres & Zapdos & ArticunoTag Team GX, an example of a TAG TEAM Trio.

All TAG TEAM Pokémon are Basic Pokémon-GX. These cards combine two or three Pokémon that have the same type to form a team, which is reflected in the card's name and artwork focusing equally on each Pokémon.

TAG TEAMS have more HP than regular Pokémon-GX. When a TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX is Knocked Out, the opponent takes three Prize cards instead of one. The Rule Box is colored silver, with a yellow border and name tag. This supersedes the normal Pokémon-GX rule, which is not printed on these cards.

The GX attack of a TAG TEAM card is called a TAG TEAM GX attack.[1] These attacks have a "team bonus", an additional effect that only applies if a condition specific to the card is met.[2] In most cases, the requirement is the Pokémon having extra Energy attached to it in addition to the attack's cost. For example, Charizard & BraixenTag Team GX's Crimson Flame Pillar-GX attack costs one Fire Energy, and the team bonus occurs if the Pokémon has one additional Energy attached to it. A TAG TEAM GX attack has a '+' sign next to the attack's cost.

Some cards have further variations on team bonus requirements, including specifying that the additional Energy has to be of a specific Energy type (such as Gardevoir & SylveonTag Team GX's Magical Miracle-GX) or requiring a specific Supporter card to be played during that turn (such as Reshiram & ZekromTag Team GX's Cross Break-GX).

TAG TEAM Pokémon cards featured in expansions are accompanied by the usual Full Art and Rainbow Rare variants as well as a second, alternate artwork variant. With the exception of the Reshiram & ZekromTag Team GX and Solgaleo & LunalaTag Team GX variants from the Japanese Dream League subset, all Regular Pokémon card prints feature artwork by Mitsuhiro Arita.

The TAG TEAM GX marker is released alongside TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX cards. This marker functions the same as the regular GX marker, differing in only its colors, which matches those of TAG TEAM cards.

TAG TEAM Supporter cards

Mallow & Lana, an example of a TAG TEAM Supporter card

TAG TEAM Supporter cards were later featured in the Cosmic Eclipse expansion. These cards feature two characters, and they also have a "team bonus", which is a secondary effect that can be used at the cost of discarding some number of cards from the player's hand.[2][3] This cost cannot be paid if the team bonus would have no effect, but can be paid in order to play the card if the card's first effect does not affect the game state.[4]

Trivia

  • According to the game's director, Atsushi Nagashima, work on the TAG TEAM mechanic began during the Black & White Series.[5] During development, other proposed drawbacks to TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX included granting the opponent four Prize cards upon Knock Out, allowing the opponent to use two GX attacks during the match instead of one, or giving the cards multiple weaknesses.[6] Mitsuhiro Arita has stated that more than 100 different combinations of Pokémon were considered for TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX cards.[7]
