The Coumarine City Festival is an animated series-exclusive annual event held at Coumarine City, which celebrates and is said to increase the friendship between a Pokémon and its Trainer.
Gym Leader Ramos explained that the tradition began after a Trainer and his Skiddo decided to settle in what would eventually become Coumarine City. As thanks to his faithful Pokémon, the Trainer planted a tree. This tree, now known as the "Pledging Tree" (Japanese: 誓いの樹 Vow Tree), continues to grow on top of a hill overlooking the city and is the largest tree in Coumarine.
As part of the festival, locals decorate the town and the "Pledging Tree" in bright lights. The gift-giving ceremony occurs after sundown and when all presents are gathered underneath the tree. In Under the Pledging Tree!, Ash, his friends, and even Team Rocket joined in the festivities and gave their Pokémon gifts.
