The Battle Pass is a feature on Pokémon TCG Live that provides an improving stage or ladder rung of rewards for players successfully winning matches and completing daily quests. Players have the duration of a Pokémon Trading Card Game major expansion's debut (approximately 9 weeks) to progress through a varying number of tiers. Players start with Tier 0 unlocked, and earn experience through matches and completing Quests to unlock higher tiers. Players collect rewards from each tier, including decks, booster packs, Collector's Crates, Deck accessories, and Avatar Customizations. Upon the start of a new Battle Pass, progression is fully reset. This feature was substantially revised as of version 1.20.0 for the release of Surging Sparks.[1]
Tiers
Pre-Surging Sparks
The Battle Pass usually consisted of 50 tiers, though Twilight Masquerade had 51 Tiers[2] and Shrouded Fable had 30 Tiers[3]. Unlocking the next tier required 1000 experience.
The Battle Pass had two tracks. The first was the Basic Pass, which was available to all players by default. The other track is the Premium Pass, which had to be purchased with 600 Crystals. Each one had separate rewards, but Tiers unlocked applied to both tracks. Note that the Premium Pass was purchased for each Battle Pass; this status does not carry over.
Instead of purchasing the Premium Pass, the player could purchase the Premium Pass + for 1800 Crystals. It also unlocked the Premium Pass, but additionally unlocked each tier up to and including Tier 15. Each tier can be unlocked instantly for 200 Crystals, bypassing the need of earning experience. Multiple tiers can be unlocked at once in this way, with the cost multiplied by the number of tiers.
The tracks were similar in some ways and different in others. Both tracks had a complete deck rewarded at Tier 0, and each track would reward cards meant to upgrade its respective deck. A minimum of 16 cards would be rewarded in such a way, though some Battle Passes had additional cards and the number was not always the same between the Basic Pass and the Premium Pass. Shrouded Fable awarded the most additional cards, with 22 on both tracks. The Basic Pass typically rewarded Credits, booster packs of the current expansion, and a Collector Crate of the current expansion whilst the Premium Pass typically rewarded Coins, Crystals, booster packs of prior expansions, Deck accessories, Avatar Customizations, and a second Collector Crate of the current expansion.
Post-Surging Sparks
From Surging Sparks on, the Battle Pass only has one track. It initially ran for 74 tiers, with one deck awarded at Tier 0 and a second deck awarded at Tier 33, and as of version 1.22.0 now runs for 100 tiers with the second deck awarded at Tier 50. Prior to this change; unlocking the next tier required a progressive amount of experience[4], with the first ten levels requiring 550 XP per level, between level 10 and 30 requiring 750 XP per level, and level 30 onwards requiring 1000 XP per level. It was overall tuning to the experience points in the Black Bolt & White Flare Battle Pass[5], with the first twenty-five levels requiring 550 XP per level, between level 26 and 50 requiring 750 XP per level, between level 51 and 75 requiring 1000 XP per level, and level 76 onwards requiring 1250 XP per level.
Because of the removal of Coins as a currency as of version 1.21.0 Battle Passes starting with Surging Sparks no longer include them as rewards. As of version 1.22.0 Crystals were renamed to Trainer Points and the Credits to Trade Credits, though they remain functionally identical to their original counterparts.[6]
While The Pokémon Company International stated that tiers can no longer be unlocked by spending Crystals, as of November 9th, 2024 unlocking tiers in this way is still possible.
Quests
Quests appear above the Battle Pass, and provide XP to it once completed. A player may only complete each quest they receive once per day, with new quests being provided at the start of each day. A player may also 'reset' each quest to replace it with a new one once per day. If a quest is partially completed when new quests are provided it will not be removed and can still be completed, revealing the new quest once it is.
Certain events, such as the Pokémon TCG Live First Anniversary Summer Bash event, add to the pool of possible quests for their duration. These quests can be more specific than the normal ones, as they may require the player to take more specific actions typically related to the event's theme like healing damage or playing Pokémon of specific Energy types. Events may also increase the rewards for completing a quest, for example the Study Season event provided double XP when completing themed quests.[7]
Pre-Journey Together
Prior to version 1.24.0 the player would receive two quests per day, each chosen at random from separate lists of "common" quests and "uncommon" quests. The quests can be thought of as appearing in "slots" with a "common" quest being in the left "slot" and an "uncommon" quest appearing in the right "slot".
"Common" quests rewarded 50 Coins and 300 experience when completed while "uncommon" quests rewarded 60 Trainer Points (Crystals) and 500 experience when completed. After coins were discontinued, quests immediately stopped granting coins and instead granted 45 Trainer Points and 220 experience.

Post-Journey Together
Following version 1.24.0 a third daily quest was added to the Battle Pass, intended as a more challenging 'intentionally designed' quest typically related to the free decks awarded through the Battle Pass - for example during the Journey Together Battle Pass a player could receive the quest "Play a match with 4 Metal Pokémon in your deck", coinciding with a free Hop's Zacian ex deck. The amount of Trainer Points awarded was also increased from 45 to 100.
In order to make progressing through the longer Battle Pass easier version 1.28.0 increased the amount of XP quests provide to 1000, and once again increased the amount of awarded Trainer Points to 200.[9]
