A Shiny Pokémon (Japanese: 色違いポケモン differently colored Pokémon) is a specific Pokémon with different coloration to what is usual for its species. It is one of the many differences that a Pokémon can have within its species.
In Pokémon GO, Shiny Pokémon may be encountered randomly in all types of encounters: the wild, from hatching Eggs, by completing Field Research tasks, or by winning Raid Battles. During Community Day events, featured Pokémon have an increased chance of being Shiny in the wild. Shiny Pokémon are represented by a icon. When a Shiny Pokémon is encountered in the wild, the icon appears at the upper left of the Pokémon's CP. When browsing the Pokémon Box, the icon appears at the upper left of its sprite. Upon capturing a Shiny Pokémon in the wild, its name is shown in yellow text instead of white. Shiny encounters are random for each player, meaning that if two players attempt to catch the same Pokémon, one player may encounter a Shiny Pokémon and the other may not.
All Pokémon seen in the overworld appear non-Shiny, but when a player attempts to capture a Pokémon, it may appear as a Shiny Pokémon. Likewise, during a Raid Battle, the Raid Boss always appears non-Shiny during battle, but it may become Shiny during the bonus challenge. Similarly, all Shadow Pokémon used by Team GO Rocket members appear non-Shiny in battle, but certain ones have a chance of becoming Shiny during the bonus challenge.
Shiny Legendary Pokémon from raid battles have a 100% catch rate if successfully hit with a Premier Ball. However, this is not the case for Shiny Pokémon encountered in level 4 or lower raids or Shiny Legendary Pokémon encountered outside of raids.
Only the Shiny forms of certain Pokémon have been released, often coinciding with a special event or update. For most evolution families, only the first-stage Pokémon is obtainable as Shiny, including those with baby Pokémon. The only known exceptions are:
- Pikachu
- Alolan Raichu
- Clefairy (since Solstice Event 2020)
- Jigglypuff (since GO Fest 2020)
- Alolan Exeggutor
- Alolan Marowak
- Mr. Mime (Shiny released prior to introduction of Mime Jr.)
- Magmar (since Lunar New Year 2020)
- Marill (since Spring Event 2020)
- Sudowoodo (since Tricky Pokémon 2020)
- Wobbuffet (since Wobbuffet Spotlight Hour on April 21, 2020)
- Roselia (Shiny released prior to introduction of Budew)
And the following evolved Pokémon have only been catchable as Shiny during limited-time events:
- Ivysaur and Venusaur (Evolution Event Raid Day)
- Charmeleon and Charizard (Evolution Event Raid Day)
- Wartortle and Blastoise (Evolution Event Raid Day)
- Raticate (wearing a party hat)
- Nidorina and Nidoqueen (International Day of the Girl Child 2018)
- Nidorino (Nidorino and Gengar Raid Day, wearing a party hat)
- Gengar (Gengar Raid Day; Nidorino and Gengar Raid Day, wearing a party hat)
- Gyarados (Lunar New Year 2020)
Shiny rates
Unlike in the core series, Shiny rates vary across different species. Shiny rates for any one species is constant across all encounter types.[1] During some events, the Shiny rate for certain Pokémon is temporarily and significantly boosted. The following lists the various Shiny rates that have been observed.[2][3] A legend in bold denotes a permanently boosted Shiny rate.
Permanent Shiny rates
Category | Legend | Estimated rate | Details |
---|---|---|---|
Standard | 1/500 | Standard, unboosted rate for most Pokémon species. | |
Boosted | B | 1/63 | Species that have a permanently boosted rate, including outside of special events. These include:
|
Legendary | L | 1/20 | All Legendary and Mythical Pokémon |
No longer available | N | 0 | Species that previously had its Shiny form available, but not anymore. |
Event-boosted Shiny rates
These Shiny rates are temporarily boosted rates in conjunction with an in-game event. These are usually reverted back to their permanent Shiny rates at the end of the event.
Category | Legend | Estimated rate | Details |
---|---|---|---|
Community Day | C | 1/25 1/100 |
Species featured during a Community Day have a temporarily boosted rate during this period. Prior to November 5, 2018, this rate was also used for other events that featured globally boosted Shiny rates, such as GO Fest and Safari Zone events. During December Community Day weekends, past Community Day Pokémon have a less-boosted Shiny rate of 1/100 outside of their featured hours. |
Global tie-ins for local events | G | 1/125 | Species featured during global tie-ins to real-world local events, such as GO Fest and Safari Zone events, have a moderately boosted Shiny rate. Prior to November 5, 2018, these Pokémon instead used the Community Day rate. |
Raid Day | R | 1/10 | Species featured during a three-hour Raid Day event have a temporarily boosted Shiny rate. |
Limited Research | F | 1/10 1/20 1/40 |
Species featured during Limited Research events have a temporarily boosted Shiny rate. Shiny rates have varied across Limited Research events. |
Other temporary Shiny rate | O | Varies | These Pokémon have had non-standard, temporarily boosted Shiny rates during certain events. |
In addition, attendees of GO Fest have observed boosted rates across all eligible species during the event hours. In 2020, this has been observed to be around the same as that of permanently-boosted species (B): 1/63.
