The round begins in [[Viridian City]], where two people have gathered around the [[Viridian Gym]]. They discuss {{adv|Giovanni}}'s 'Missing In Action' status.

In [[Viridian City]], two people are discussing that the [[Viridian Gym]] is still closed, one remarking that {{adv|Giovanni}} has been gone for a long time. Asking who Giovanni is, he gestures to a carved bust inside the closed gym, pointing out that he's the [[Gym Leader]].


A quick scene change brings the readers to [[Diglett's Cave]]'s [[Pewter City]] exit. {{Adv|Red}} and Giovanni exit it; Red having joined Giovanni on a search for Pokémon fossils. With a few stones in hand, the two proceed to the city to have them examined. As they walk on, Red suggests to Giovanni that he finds the man familiar, but Giovanni assures him that they have never met. Amidst complimenting each other, Red remarks on how he's defeated [[Gym Leader]]s and members of [[Team Rocket]]; a comment that does not go unnoticed by Giovanni, whose expression turns serious, but nevertheless continues to humor Red. As the two near the city, Red and Giovanni notice a sudden change in temperature; the culprits being a pair of {{p|Magmar}} that had set the [[Pewter Museum of Science]] on fire. Red promptly jumps into battle, determined to show off his skills, while Giovanni decides to watch his strategy.
Meanwhile, {{adv|Red}} and Giovanni exit from [[Diglett's Cave]]'s [[Pewter City]] exit. Giovanni apologizes for holding up Red's journey, but Red excuses him, saying that it doesn't get better than going on a search for [[Fossil|Pokémon Fossils]]. Giovanni holds up a handful of small rocks that they excavated the day prior, hoping there's something worthwhile inside, as they start heading to the [[Pewter Museum of Science]] to have them examined. Heading down a dirt path, Red can't shake the feeling he's seen Giovanni before. He asks if he's sure that Giovanni doesn't remember him, but it appears like Red has gone down this line of questioning before, Giovanni putting on a kindly, but exhausted smile and reconfirms that he's sure they've never met.  


Red begins by calling out {{DL|Red (Adventures)|Snor|Snorlax}} to function as a wall while Red thinks of how to continue; Giovanni silently admonishes his apparent lack of strategy. However, Red switches to his newly caught {{p|Sandshrew}} and uses {{m|Sand-Attack}} to suffocate the flames. Giovanni thinks to himself Red's victories were likely due to his inventiveness, then points out to Red that while the Sand-Attack is striking the Magmar, all it seems to be doing is make the Magmar angrier. Following a bit more thought, Red tells Sandshrew to run in circles, creating a sandstorm instead. The attack successfully knocks the Magmar off their feet and immobilizes them completely in sand.
Red thinks that maybe he just can't treat a Pokémon fan as a stranger, but Giovanni talks himself down, saying that he's really just a researcher and could only wish to rise to being a [[Pokémon Trainer]] as good as Red. He accepts the compliment, proud to say that even Gym Leaders fear his talents. Giovanni gives a less than enthusiastic response, Red thinking he doesn't believe him. He reflects back on the battles he's had, especially those against members of [[Team Rocket]].  


Evaluating Red's quick thinking and his ability to draw out a Pokémon's potential, Giovanni prepares to take care of Red when the boy withdraws his Sandshrew, declaring he cannot attack the helpless Magmar; at this, Giovanni calmly stands down from his combative stance. Noting that the Museum of Science is in burnt ruins, Giovanni gifts Red with a translucent stone with a 'bug trapped inside', before the two wish each other luck and separate.
Giovanni changes the topic to the weather as they both suddenly notice the sweltering heat, Giovanni thinking to himself that it must be at least two {{pkmn2|wild}} {{p|Magmar}}. Red notices that the Pewter Museum of Science has gone up in flames, the two Magmar both in view. Watching Red leave, Giovanni sneers at Red's chivalrous nature, pointing out Magmar's persistence to track down enemies that defeat them; as he monologues the Magmar break free from their sandy imprisonment and lunge at the man, only for Giovanni to promptly freeze them with his {{p|Cloyster}}. Declaring that Red's foolishness would eventually spell his downfall, Giovanni has Cloyster split the still-frozen Magmar in two, and as he reveals a letter 'R' on his shirt, he decides that despite Red's victories over [[Lt. Surge]] and [[Koga]], the boy is no threat to Team Rocket...
