The player's mother (Japanese: おかあさん mother) is a character in every main series Pokémon game. Although different each time, she will always be the one to see her child off on his or her journey with his or her starter Pokémon.
In the games
In the games, when the player returns to his or her hometown, she will heal his or her party to full health, as there is no Pokémon Center in the town. She will also do several things specific to the games' region.
- Kanto
- In Generation I as well as in FireRed and LeafGreen, Red/Leaf's mom will not do much; however, she does inform him/her that Professor Oak wanted to see him/her at the beginning of the games. This mom also appears in Generation II telling Gold/Kris how worried she is about Red, but also how proud she is of him.
- Johto
- In Generation II, Gold/Kris's mom informs him/her that the PokéGear has returned from the repair shop, and helps set the day of the week. She also will save money if the player wishes and occasionally buys decorations for the bedroom, or items such as Super Potions. Her cooking specialty is the Cinnabar Volcano Burger. She will return in HeartGold and SoulSilver, once again providing her unique money-saving services.
- Hoenn
- In Generation III, Brendan/May's mom helps him/her to move in, and tells him/her to set the time on the clock upstairs. When the player defeats Norman, she will give them an Amulet Coin. After the player has beaten the Elite Four and Champion, she'll show him/her a news report about either Latias (in Pokémon Sapphire) or Latios (in Pokémon Ruby). In Pokémon Emerald she'll ask if the news report was either about a red creature (Latias) or a blue creature (Latios). The one chosen will be roaming Hoenn.
- Sinnoh
- In Generation IV, Lucas/Dawn's mom takes on an active lifestyle, competing in Pokémon Super Contests in Hearthome City at times. Her name is revealed to be Johanna, by Keira, at the Hearthome City Contest Hall. She gives her child a tuxedo/dress when they meet there.
In side games
- Orre
- In Pokémon XD, Michael's mom is a researcher at the Pokémon Lab. Her name is Lily and she has a daughter named Jovi. She takes a supportive role throughout the game by working alongside Professor Krane.
- Almia
- In Almia, Kellyn/Kate exchanges letters with their family exchange letters as they attend Ranger School. The family later moves to Chicole Village to be closer to Kellyn or Kate. The mother doesn't do much besides look after her youngest child and take care of the player's inactive partner Pokémon. She later has the player perform a Quest where she asks the player to read a recipe off the fridge for her while she cooks.
In the anime
In the anime, each of the main characters which have a player character counterpart have had their mother introduced except for Jimmy and Marina. Unlike the moms in the games, however, all of them lead a moderately more active lifestyle.
Delia, Ash's mom, is shown to travel to most of the Pokémon League competitions that her son takes part in. She also has her own Pokémon, a Mr. Mime, which cleans the house for her.
Caroline, May's mom, is also shown to travel a bit to watch her daughter's competitions in the Grand Festivals. Unlike her game counterpart, however, she lives in Petalburg City. She also seems to have Pokémon; however, they are never shown.
Johanna, Dawn's mom, apparently lives life very similarly to her own game counterpart. She has a Glameow, and was formerly a winner of Sinnoh's Grand Festival.
Trivia
- Lily and Johanna are the only in-game mothers to have their name revealed.
- Red's mom is the only mom to appear in three generations of Pokémon.
- Johanna is the only mother to be seen outside of her hometown other than the player's mom in Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald who is seen outside of her house but still in her hometown when her son/daughter comes out of the moving van and when she gives the player Running Shoes.
