Sync pairs with reward bonus |
Lurking Shadow (Japanese: 暗躍する影) was the first legendary event in Pokémon Masters EX. It was focused on the sync pair Giovanni and Mewtwo. This pair could be teamed up with by completing the final story area of the event, A Questionable Alliance.
This story was added to Legendary Adventures on November 24, 2021.
First run
The event first ran from December 5 to 19, 2019. In this run, players could earn custom vouchers by completing single-player and co-op battles. Unlike most event items, these vouchers were not exchanged for coins at the end of the event period, as they were intended to be used during reruns of the event. Completing battles also allowed players to earn custom items to unlock moves, unlock passive skills, and increase the level cap of Giovanni and Mewtwo.
In single-player mode, players could alternate completing story areas and event battles until reaching the story area Unfathomable Strength. The final story area of the event, A Questionable Alliance, was not unlocked until the player had collected 800 Custom Vouchers 1.
Vouchers earned during battles could be exchanged in the shop for various items, such as items used for unlocking sync pairs' level caps, Custom ★ Power-Ups for Giovanni and Mewtwo, and additional copies of Giovanni and Mewtwo. However, exchanges for Giovanni and Mewtwo's custom items could not be performed until the player completed A Questionable Alliance.
Players could complete event missions to earn Gems. Each mission required players to complete any event battle a certain number of times and rewarded 100 Gems. Players were rewarded with 300 Gems for completing all 12 missions.
Second run
The event reran from March 6 to 16, 2020. The "Grimsley and Karen Spotlight Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Grimsley and Liepard and Karen and Houndoom for the duration of the event.
In this run, changes were made to the way Giovanni and Mewtwo's level cap, moves, and skills were unlocked, such that they used Custom Buff Blends and Custom Great Buff Blends, and they no longer used Custom Super Training Machines. So, the former two were added to the reward pools for all battles, while the latter was removed.
In addition, a few changes were made to the structure of the event to make it less tedious to obtain Giovanni and Mewtwo and other items. The amount of custom vouchers received as completion and battle rewards was increased, and three new single-player battles were added with additional rewards. The first of these, "Mewtwo Strikes! Round 2", was unlocked after completing Unfathomable Strength, while the other two, "Challenge Team Break: Part 1" and "Challenge Team Break: Part 2", were unlocked sequentially after completing A Questionable Alliance.
Three new exchanges were added to the shop lineup as well, with the most notable ones being exchanges to convert Giovanni and Mewtwo's Custom Training Machines and Custom Super Training Machines into Custom Buff Blends and Custom Great Buff Blends, respectively.
The number of event missions was increased drastically. The new missions had a wide variety of objectives, such as leveling up Giovanni and Mewtwo, completing certain event battles with Giovanni and Mewtwo on the team, and using sync moves to complete event battles. Most missions awarded Custom Buff Blends and Custom Great Buff Blends for Giovanni and Mewtwo, but some awarded Gems, and a few awarded Custom Vouchers 1.
However, the status of event area info, first-time rewards, and items exchanged in the shop was not reset from the previous run. So, players who had already completed everything in the original run immediately received access to the single-player battles "Mewtwo Strikes! Round 2" and "Challenge Team Break: Part 1".
Third run
The event reran again from February 8 to March 11, 2021. The "Grimsley and Karen Spotlight Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Grimsley and Liepard and Karen and Houndoom from the beginning of the event to February 26, 2021.
In this run, the structure of the event was significantly altered. The custom vouchers were replaced with Legendary Prize Coins D, which could be used to draw items from a prize box pool. If the grand prize was drawn from the prize box, players could advance to the next prize pool. The grand prizes in the prize box included 3★ Level-Up Manuals, co-op sync orbs, 5★ Scout Tickets, Custom ★ Power-Ups for Giovanni and Mewtwo, and a Strike Move Candy Coin. Extra Prize Coins were automatically exchanged with coins once the event was finished.
Area info also differed from the previous two runs. The single-player battles against Team Break did not return. The co-op battles were reworked into two additional single-player battles that were unlocked after completing A Questionable Alliance, which was now unlocked immediately after completing "Mewtwo Strikes! Round 2". As Giovanni and Mewtwo could now be powered up using regular sync pair items, their custom items could no longer be obtained as rewards from battles.
The event missions were completely overhauled. A 1★ medal was added as an event mission reward for completing A Questionable Alliance. A few missions awarded Gems and 3★ Level-Up Manuals for completing battle areas in the event a certain number of times. Players could also receive three additional copies of Giovanni and Mewtwo as rewards for leveling up the sync pair to certain levels, and a fourth additional copy for completing all other missions.
As additional copies of Giovanni and Mewtwo and Custom ★ Power-Ups for the sync pair could now be obtained in other ways, the shop no longer contained exchanges for these items. Instead, the only exchanges available were to convert Giovanni and Mewtwo's Custom ★ Power-Ups into 5★ Power-Ups or 3★ Power-Ups, if the player had already raised Giovanni and Mewtwo to maximum potential.
Fourth run
The event reran again from July 26 to August 19, 2021. Giovanni and Mewtwo's sync grid was expanded in conjunction with the event.
In this run, the overall structure was the same as the previous run. Legendary Prize Coins J could be used to make pulls from the prize box, and the grand prizes included 3★ Level-Up Manuals, co-op sync orbs, 5★ Scout Tickets, Custom ★ Power-Ups for Giovanni and Mewtwo, and a Tech Move Candy Coin.
In addition, one of the exchanges in the shop was tweaked slightly. 10 Giovanni and Mewtwo Custom ★ Power-Ups were now required to receive one 5★ Power-Up, instead of 5.
Fifth run
The event reran again from September 16 to October 16, 2021, alongside the villain event prelude Looming Shadow of Kanto. Giovanni and Mewtwo received their EX style in conjunction with these two events.
In this run, Legendary Prize Coins P could be used to make pulls from the prize box, and the grand prizes included 3★ Level-Up Manuals, co-op sync orbs, 5★ Scout Tickets, Custom ★ Power-Ups for Giovanni and Mewtwo, and a Support Move Candy Coin. Everything else was the same as the previous run.
Plot
The event starts with Giovanni asking Mewtwo to sow seeds of chaos.
At the Pokémon Center, Trista relays news of a strong sync pair causing trouble and warns the player to take caution when exploring the beach.
Brock, Misty, and the player go out to the beach to help stop the trouble. They overhear some Team Break masked men discuss how strong the Trainer is and wonder whether they can make him their boss. However, one of them reveals that he had previously stated not being interested as he was already leader of Team Rainbow Rocket. Brock and Misty interrupt their conversation and Misty realizes that this must mean that Giovanni has come to Pasio. Brock explains to the player that Giovanni is the leader of Team Rocket in Kanto. They decide to stop him but the Team Break thugs try to stop them and start a battle. After being defeated, the masked men leave.
Brock, Misty and the player head into the cave where Giovanni is. After some time, they eventually find him. Misty confronts Giovanni asking what he is up to despite Team Rocket having being disbanded. Giovanni is surprised that Team Rocket is disbanded and guesses he is doomed to be a criminal no matter which world he is in.
Giovanni reveals he was able to mine a sync stone from the cave. He reveals his aim to bend the power of the sync stone to his will and to unleash the hidden power in them. He brings out Mewtwo and battles them to see what the sync stone is capable of.
After the battle, Giovanni sees that it is possible for the bond of a sync pair to manifest great strength. Brock doubts Giovanni will give up on seeking power and believes he was not treating that as a serious battle. Giovanni remarks that the battle was a test run. He dares the player to follow him to for a rematch and then disappears with a snap of his fingers.
The player finally corners Giovanni in a cave. He admits being impressed with the team's full power and asks whether they would like to work with him. Brock does not want to get involved with his evil schemes. Giovanni understands their doubts and states he has been thinking about changing his ways and starting afresh in this new part of the world. Both Brock and Misty are skeptical but Brock suggests that the player could keep an eye on Giovanni by letting him join the team. Giovanni promises not to get involved with Team Break and just to enjoy the PML. As they leave, Giovanni reflects that he has been able to infiltrate their unit successfully and is still deciding whether to truly start afresh or to plan something else.
