Ash and his Pokemon are training for the Pokemon World Coronation Series. While Pikachu, Gengar, Lucario and Dragonite are training, Ash's Farfetch'd displays its strength by shaking the ground using its leek. Ash notices Farfetch'd getting pumped up and checks up on it, but Farfetch'd smacks Ash down to the ground with its leek. Goh and Cinderace rush over to where Ash is, to inform him about the Geodude outbreak near Rock Tunnel. Goh wants to catch Geodude so he can evolve it and register both Graveler and Golem in his Pokedex in one fell swoop. Ash decides to head to Rock Tunnel with Goh as an opportunity to train Farfetch'd.

Ash and Goh are outside Rock Tunnel, where Goh is scanning for Geodude, however there is no outbreak. Meanwhile, Farfetch'd begins its training by smashing many boulders, carelessly. Due to its carelessness, many rocks are launched towards Goh and Sobble. Fortunately, Cinderace jumps in and kicks the rocks away. Ash warns Farfetch'd to be more careful, but that warning goes to deaf ears as Farfetch'd ignores it. While concentrating its energy, Farfetch'd breaks a large boulder which contained a Geodude. Goh spots the Geodude and catches it with ease. Goh then thanks Farfetch'd for finding Geodude, but it simply walks away and resumes training. Ash explains to Goh how his Farfetch'd wants to be a "leek master". In other words, Farfetch'd wants to be the strongest leek fighter. Ash walks up to Farfetch'd, promising that they will achieve that goal together. But Farfetch'd angrily launches Ash and Pikachu across a mountain. As Goh tries to understand what a leek master means, Ash gets an announcement for a World Coronation Series battle.

A trainer and his Gurdurr arrive from inside the tunnel. The trainer then starts to touch Farfetch'd, complimenting how well it is being raised, much to its chagrin. As Ash tries to intervene, Farfetch'd, irritated by this trainer touching it, proceeds to attack the trainer. The trainer's Gurdurr jumps in to protect him by using its signature steel beam to block the incoming leek. A bright light shines due to the impact of the leek and the steel beam. Both Ash and this trainer compliment each other's Pokemon for how well they are trained. The trainer then introduces himself as "Genba, the Self-Made Man". Moments later, the Rotom Drone flies in, approving this Super Class battle, which is a one-on one battle between Ash and Genba. The battle begins with Ash and Genba sending out Farfetch'd and Gurdurr, respectively. Goh quickly scans Gurdurr and his Pokedex explains how destruction is where it excels in, and construction is where it lacks. Both Farfetch'd and Gurdurr use their items to stir up some wind. Ash commands Farfetch'd to use Night Slash, and Genba tells his Gurdurr to use High Horsepower. Farfetch'd tries to land its Night Slash, but Gurdurr manages to block the incoming attack, and sends Farfetch'd flying across the field with High Horsepower. As Genba praises Gurdurr's skill with its steel beam, Farfetch'd recovers from the attack and charges at Gurdurr with Night Slash. Gurdurr prepares to counter it with Focus Blast, but before it can launch the attack, Farfetch'd successfully lands the Night Slash and sends Gurdurr flying and colliding into the mountain.

Ash then commands Farfetch'd to use Fury Cutter, while Genba tells Gurdurr to hop back in and use Focus Blast. Farfetch'd deflects the Focus Blast and proceeds to attack Gurdurr, which is defending itself using its steel beam. Even with the relentless attacks coming from Farfetch'd, Goh notices that Gurdurr is defending itself well and predicting the moves Farfetch'd is using, which proves how it is more skilled. Ash then tells Farfetch'd to use Night Slash, but Gurdurr easily dodges it. As Farfetch'd is trying to defend itself on time, Genba commands Gurdurr to use Brutal Swing, which sends Farfetch'd into a giant boulder, where it is stuck in the rubble. As Ash and Pikachu head over to the boulder to check on Farfetch'd, a mysterious trainer and his Gallade appear above the battlefield, analyzing the battle. Rotom Drone heads over to the boulder, scanning for Farfetch'd and verifying its condition. Moments later, Farfetch'd uses its leek to break the giant boulder from inside, freeing itself and getting ready to resume its battle.

Ash tells the Wild Duck Pokemon to use Focus Energy, making it pumped up. Farfetch'd shows how pumped up it is by making a large crack on the ground, which Gurdurr stops with its steel beam. The Muscular Pokemon then taunts Farfetch'd, which makes it charge at Gurdurr recklessly, something Ash warns against, and Farfetch'd prepares to use Night Slash. Gurdurr charges a Focus Blast, and fires. Farfetch'd dodges the Focus Blast and lands a powerful Night Slash on Gurdurr's back. Both Pokemon recover and ddstart inching closer to each other. Genba tells Gurdurr to use Bulk Up and Ash commands Farfetch'd to use Focus Energy again. Both Farfetch'd and Gurdurr are powered up and their energies start clashing. Both Ash and Genba tell their Pokemon to use Brutal Swing, leading to both pokemon clashing with their items. Ash tells Farfetch'd to keep spinning its leek to build up power, and Genba makes sure Gurdurr defends itself. Gurdurr then uses Brutal Swing vertically, and Farfetch'd dodges the attack and lands on Gurdurr's steel beam. It then jumps and both Pokemon use Brutal Swing. They stay there, the leek and steel beam colliding, and both Pokemon test their strength. After some stressful seconds of their weapons clashing, Farfetch'd manages to crack Gurdurr's steel beam. It uses all its strength to finally break the steel beam in half and land a powerful Brutal Swing on Gurdurr's head, winning the match. Ash is overjoyed and congratulates Farfetch'd for winning and its "steel beam slice". The rankings update, and Ash goes from rank 415 to rank 381. Genba then thanks Ash for the battle and realizes that they have a long way to go before challenging strong trainers. Gurdurr is upset about its steel beam, which Genba collects and promises to build a new one. Genba gives Gurdurr his pickaxe to use in the meantime. Farfetch'd, regardless of its exhausting battle, proceeds to train. When Ash goes after Farfetch'd, it coldly blocks Ash with its leek and walks away. Genba remarks that Farfetch'd has the eyes of a warrior and it has a lot of resilience. He tells Ash that it is a Pokemon worth raising. Realizing this, Ash and Pikachu run after Farfetch'd, followed by Goh and Cinderace.

Ash and Goh arrive at a different section of Rock Tunnel, where Farfetch'd smashes more boulders and continues to practice swinging its leek. Goh is surprised that Farfetch'd is still training despite being in a tough battle a few minutes ago. Ash then claims that it is getting closer to becoming a leek master, since it managed to break a steel beam. Farfetch'd and Pikachu then notice a Gallade, observing its training. Goh, thinking the Gallade is a wild Pokemon, prepares to catch it. However, the mysterious trainer arrives just in time to stop Goh from catching his partner Gallade. He then calls Farfetch'd "inadequate", stating that its battle style is very "rough and unrefined" and it seemed oblivious to its surroundings. This mysterious trainer claims he does not know why he is offering advice; He doesnt want Farfetch'd to battle the same way. He introduces himself as Rinto, and offers Farfetch'd an opportunity to battle his Gallade, which Farfetch'd accepts without hesitation, much to Ash's surprise. Before they battle, Rinto states that Farfetch'd does not know what is most essential, and it is something that it must learn when it battles. Ash commands Farfetch'd to use Night Slash, which Gallade easily deflects. Farfetch'd recovers from its fall and uses a barrage of Night Slash, but Gallade effortlessly dodges all the attacks and blocks the closest attack. Ash then tells Farfetch'd to use Brutal Swing, but Rinto's Gallade uses False Swipe, which hits Farfetch'd very hard, leaving a red mark on its body. Farfetch'd tries to get its leek, but it falls down, giving the win to Rinto and his Gallade. Ash runs over to Farfetch'd and helps it up, making sure it is ok. Rinto tells Ash that Farfetch'd has a lot of potential, although it is a shame about its inadequacy. Rinto then claims that the next time they meet, he hopes to see Ash and Farfetch'd battling in unison.

Back at Cerise Park, Ash and Pikachu show Goh and Farfetch'd their new leeks. Ash tells Farfetch'd they will not give up and they will definitely defeat Rinto the next time they meet. When Goh asks Ash what the leeks are for, Ash tells him that he kept Rinto's advice about battling in unison and the only way for Ash to understand Farfetch'd is by training with Farfetch'd using leeks. Ash, Pikachu and Farfetch'd then get ready for their training, so Farfetch'd can achieve its goal and become a leek master.
