Introduction
After the title screen, the resident researcher of the Hoenn region, Professor Birch, appears and introduces new Trainers to the Pokémon world. The professor continues, asking the player to select both a gender and a name, which can be up to seven characters long. With that done, Birch sends the player off to begin their journey!

Badge 1: Littleroot Town to Rustboro City
Home
Littleroot Town
The game begins in the back of a moving truck, as your family has just moved here from the far-off Johto region. Hop out of the truck to meet Mom and step inside your new home. Head upstairs to check out your room and set the clock. Return to the first floor and Mom excitedly calls you over to the TV; the current program just aired a segment about the Petalburg Gym, where your dad is the new Gym Leader. She then suggests visiting his friend, your new neighbor, Professor Birch. Welcome to Littleroot Town!
The game begins in a pickup truck parked in Littleroot Town. The player's family has just moved here from Johto. After exiting the truck, you will head into their house. Here, you can set the clock and visit with your mom. Once you have done this, you should then head to the neighbor's house. After learning that their neighbor, who is either Brendan or May depending on the player's gender, is not home, you should head north to 101 and rescue Professor Birch.

After stumbling across Professor Birch, who is being attacked by a Poochyena, he will tell the player to select one of the Pokémon in the bag. The options are Treecko, the Grass, Torchic, the Fire, or Mudkip, the Water. The player must choose carefully, as this Pokémon will be their starter. Once the Pokémon is selected, a battle between the starter and a Poochyena will commence. After its defeat, Birch will take the player to his lab and tell them to go to 103 to meet their rival. If the player is male, the rival will be May. If the player is female, the rival will be Brendan. After doing this, the player should head home to access their PC and withdraw a Potion. Upon completion, the player will head north towards Oldale Town, the first town with a Pokémon Center.

Oldale Town to 103
Littleroot is a quaint little town nestled on the lush southern edge of the Hoenn mainland. There are only three buildings here; your home, Professor Birch's home, and the professor's Pokémon Laboratory, where he conducts research on Pokémon distribution, in the south.
Upon reaching Oldale Town, the player will continue north to 103. Along the way, the player will meet a Poké Mart salesman. After speaking with him, the player will receive a free Potion. Once this is done, the player should continue north, where they will have their first battle with their rival.

|- align="center"
At this point, the rival will only have one Pokémon. What it is depends on which Pokémon the player chose at the beginning of the game. The rival character will have chosen the Pokémon with a type advantage over the player, at level 5. Since the rival's Pokémon has no special attacks in this battle, a good ol' Scratch/Pound/Tackle spamming session should do the trick. Upon the defeat of the rival, they will head back to Littleroot Town.

Professor Birch's House
Having just moved to a new town, why not meet your new neighbors? Visit the house next door to meet the professor's wife, then head upstairs to meet his child, May/Brendan. She/He suddenly leaves, remembering that Birch asked for help in catching a Pokémon.

Save the Professor!
When you first reach the area, you find Professor Birch being chased around by a wild Poochyena! His Bag has fallen out of his reach, and he pleads with you for help. Choose one of the three Pokémon from the Poké Balls inside the professor's Bag, and use it to scare off his attacker.

* The Grass Treecko has the most weaknesses of the trio, with five: Fire-, Bug-, Poison-, Flying-, and Ice attacks. It and its evolutions excel in Special Attack and Speed. Its Grass moves are strong against Water-, Rock-, and Ground Pokémon.

103 to Littleroot Town and back
* The Fire Torchic is great when battling Grass-, Bug-, Ice-, and Steel Pokémon, but is vulnerable to Water-, Rock-, and Ground moves. It and its evolved forms focus on Attack and Special Attack. As it grows, it gains a secondary Fighting type.
After following the rival back to Littleroot Town, the player will be given five Poké Balls. Before leaving town, the player's mom will appear to give her child a pair of Running Shoes. Once this is completed, the player may now head back up to Oldale Town. Once they arrive, they may now buy Poké Balls at the Pokémart, along with other goodies. Then, the player should head west, leaving Oldale via Route 102.

102 and Petalburg City
* The Water Mudkip has an advantage when facing Fire-, Rock-, and Ground Pokémon, but may struggle against Grass and Electric attacks. It and its evolutions specialize in Attack. As it grows, it gains a secondary Ground type; this protects it from Electric attacks, but leaves it especially vulnerable to Grass moves.
There are four easy Pokémon Trainers along Route 102. The player should battle them in order to earn experience and money.

Also along Route 102 are items and berries.
Littleroot Town
Birch's Lab
After scaring off the wild Pokémon, Birch invites you back to the Lab. As thanks for rescuing him, he happily lets you keep the young Pokémon. He then encourages you to visit May/Brendan on 103 for tips on how to be a Pokémon Trainer. When your Pokémon needs a rest, head back home and visit with Mom to have her restore it to full health.

Continuing west, the player will eventually arrive at Petalburg City. After heading to the gym, the player will learn that their father will not accept their challenge until they have earned four badges. Instead, he recommends his child go and assist Wally, who will become another rival of the player, to capture a Ralts.
Oldale Town
Once done with Wally, the player may now exit Petalburg City to the west by heading out on 104.
Oldale Town is the first settlement in the region to feature a Pokémon Center and a Poké Mart. Pokémon Centers are essentially hospitals where creatures can be restored to perfect health. The PC on the counter is always available for Trainers to organize their Pokémon. Poké Marts offer a wide range of items for sale, from Potions to Poké Balls. 102 leads off to the west, while 103 runs northward.

104 to Rustboro City
{| class="expandable" style="margin: auto; background: #BD9D7B; roundy; border: 5px solid #CEB27B;"
Route 104 is the last route before Rustboro City. It holds Petalburg Woods, which is similar to Viridian Forest in Kanto. It also holds Mr. Briney's house, which will be important later. In the woods, the player encounters a Devon worker looking for Shroomish when a Team Aqua(Sapphire) or Team Magma (Ruby) Grunt assaults him. The player will then battle the Grunt, who will run away while swearing revenge. The worker will give the player their first Great Ball. He will then realize what is happening and will run to Rustboro City. The player can then advance to the end of the woods. The last stretch to Rustboro City has: a flower shop, two trainers, a double battle, a Fisherman, and Berries.

Badge 1: Rustboro City
Upon clearing routes 101, 102, 103 and 104, proceed to Rustboro City. Rustboro City has various points of interest: the Cutter's house, in which he gives the player HM01 Cut, the Devon Corporation building, the Pokémon Trainer's School, and of course, the Gym. The Gym in Rustboro City uses Rock Pokémon.

Free Potions!
Speak to the woman near the southeast house. She works at the local Poké Mart, and shows you the way to the shop. Once there, she gives you a free Potion as part of a promotion her shop is running.

Roxanne is the Gym Leader here. She graduated with top marks from the Pokémon Trainer's School.
The Sketch Artist
The western exit is currently blocked off by a man who believes that he may have found some extremely rare Pokémon tracks. No one is allowed past until he has made a sketch of his discovery.

Route 103
103 serves as a shortcut between Oldale Town and 110. Seawater divides the route, restricting travel to the western side for now.

Defeating Roxanne should be easy with starter pokémon Treecko or Mudkip. Alternatively, Shroomish can be used by those who chose Torchic as a starter.

After defeating Roxanne, you should head towards the Devon Corporation building. Just before you go through the fence, the Grunt from Petalburg Woods runs out of the building, knocks you down, and runs off the top of the screen. He is followed by the Devon Worker.

Badge 2: Rustboro City to Dewford Town
Birch's Lab
After Rustboro City, there are two paths the player can take, Route 115 or Route 116. The player cannot Surf yet so Route 115 cannot be used. On the north-eastern edge of the city the Devon worker will tell the player that the Grunt has run to incomplete Rusturf Tunnel, part of Route 116.
After the battle, follow May/Brendan back to Professor Birch's Lab. Inside, the professor gives you a handy gadget: the Pokédex! This high-tech encyclopedia instantly records information on any Pokémon you see or catch. In addition, his child gives you five Poké Balls to start you off on your journey. Now that you have received some Poké Balls, they can be purchased at all Poké Marts in the region. Buying ten Poké Balls at once, at any location, also earns you a bonus Premier Ball.

Route 116 to Dewford Town
Meet up with Mom
On Route 116, a great place to catch Skitty, the player will have to head a short distance east to the tunnel. At the entrance of the tunnel, Mr. Briney will tell the player that his Peeko has been taken. Once inside, it is seen that the Grunt is holding a Wingull captive. The player will battle the Grunt once again, and when he is defeated it is realized that the Wingull is Mr. Briney's Peeko. Mr. Briney then invites the player to his house and leaves. Afterwards, the President of Devon Corporation will express his gratitude with a PokéNav, and will then ask the player to deliver a parcel to Steven Stone, who is in Dewford Town.
As you go to leave Littleroot, you see Mom standing outside. She is proud that you have your own Pokémon. In preparation for your adventure, she gives you a pair of Running Shoes. By holding down the B Button, these shoes allow you to run twice as fast as the normal walking speed.

The sail covers Route 105, Route 106, and Route 107. The player will then arrive at Dewford Town. The first priority should be to deliver the parcel to Steven Stone, who is in Granite Cave. However the player can also challenge the Gym to gain the ability to use HM05 Flash. It should be noted that some floors of Granite Cave are dark.

Soft Soil
There is a patch of soft soil on the route's north side. On your first visit, two Berry trees can be found growing here. Collect the fruit and the trees disappear, allowing you to plant another Berry to continue the cycle. The amount of time needed for the new tree to fully mature and produce fruit varies based on the kind of Berry. After obtaining a watering can, you may water the young plants at certain times to increase the Berry yield. Berries can have several useful effects, from curing status conditions to restoring health. They can even be turned into candy!

If the player chose Torchic as a starter, the player can take advantage of super-effective Pecks here. If the player chose Mudkip or Treecko, Taillow and Ralts provide a decent alternative.

Badge 3: Dewford Town to Mauville City
Meet up with Dad
After the player has gone to Dewford City and defeated the Gym and delivered the parcel to Steven in Granite Cave, the player should go back to Rustboro City and get the PokéNav from the president of the Devon Corp. After that, the player should go to Slateport City.
When you visit the Petalburg Gym, you find your father, Norman, standing in the lobby. He is surprised that you've made it this far from home, but is excited for you to become a Pokémon Trainer like him. A sickly boy named Wally soon enters, and explains that he will be staying with relatives in nearby Verdanturf Town in the hopes that the clean air will do him good. But he is afraid of becoming lonely there, and asks for help in catching a Pokémon to take along. Norman asks that you go with him, and loans him his Zigzagoon and a Poké Ball. Wally leads you back to 102, where he successfully catches a Ralts.

Back at the Gym, Wally can't thank you enough for helping him catch his very own Pokémon. Your father then gives you some advice: to become a strong Trainer, challenge Gym Leader Roxanne in Rustboro City before moving on to the other Gym Leaders. Though Norman is also a Gym Leader, he will not accept your challenge until you have earned four Badges.

Route 109
In Route 109, the player will find numerous trainers and the Seashore House, a shop to buy Soda Pop.
Slateport City
In Slateport City, there is the Slateport Market, Captain Stern's Shipyard, the Oceanic Museum, Pokémon Fan Club, Name Rater's House, Slateport Harbor, and the Pokémon Contest-Hyper Rank. In the Slateport Market, one can buy an Azurill doll, Marill doll, and Skitty doll, each for 3000 Poké, TM10, and TM43, each for 3000 Poké. Also after buying TM43, a vendor at the northern end of the Market will sell the player extra items. The Contest Hall cannot be used yet because the player has not won any Normal Rank or Super Rank Contest. Team Aqua is blocking the entrance to the Oceanic Museum and will not go away until the player goes north of the city and returns. The player should then enter the museum (there is a 50 Poké entrance fee) and proceed up the stairs, where the player will find Captain Stern. However, shortly after the encounter, two Team Aqua or Magma Grunts will enter and battle the player, back-to-back. When the two Grunts are defeated, the Team Leader appears and promises the player that his plan is not to be stopped by a child.
Route 110
Before, when the player first went north of the city, many Grunts were blocking the road. Now they are gone and the player can proceed.

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.
These pages follow the original Game Boy Advance iteration, not Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. The guide for those games can be found here.

Home

The game begins in the back of a moving truck, as your family has just moved here from the far-off Johto region. Hop out of the truck to meet Mom and step inside your new home. Head upstairs to check out your room and set the clock. Return to the first floor and Mom excitedly calls you over to the TV; the current program just aired a segment about the Petalburg Gym, where your dad is the new Gym Leader. She then suggests visiting his friend, your new neighbor, Professor Birch. Welcome to Littleroot Town!

Littleroot Town

Littleroot Town

Littleroot is a quaint little town nestled on the lush southern edge of the Hoenn mainland. There are only three buildings here; your home, Professor Birch's home, and the professor's Pokémon Laboratory, where he conducts research on Pokémon distribution, in the south.

Professor Birch's House

Having just moved to a new town, why not meet your new neighbors? Visit the house next door to meet the professor's wife, then head upstairs to meet his child, May/Brendan. She/He suddenly leaves, remembering that Birch asked for help in catching a Pokémon.

Route 101

Route 101
Choose wisely!

Route 101 is a short path that connects Littleroot Town to Oldale Town in the north. The route features several patches of tall grass, a favorite hiding place of wild Pokémon.

 • The Water-type Mudkip has an advantage when facing Fire-, Rock-, and Ground-type Pokémon, but may struggle against Grass and Electric attacks. It and its evolutions specialize in Attack. As it grows, it gains a secondary Ground type; this protects it from Electric attacks, but leaves it especially vulnerable to Grass moves.

Littleroot Town

Birch's Lab

After scaring off the wild Pokémon, Birch invites you back to the Lab. As thanks for rescuing him, he happily lets you keep the young Pokémon. He then encourages you to visit May/Brendan on Route 103 for tips on how to be a Pokémon Trainer. When your Pokémon needs a rest, head back home and visit with Mom to have her restore it to full health.

Oldale Town

Oldale Town

Oldale Town is the first settlement in the region to feature a Pokémon Center and a Poké Mart. Pokémon Centers are essentially hospitals where creatures can be restored to perfect health. The PC on the counter is always available for Trainers to organize their Pokémon. Poké Marts offer a wide range of items for sale, from Potions to Poké Balls. Route 102 leads off to the west, while Route 103 runs northward.

Free Potions!

Speak to the woman near the southeast house. She works at the local Poké Mart, and shows you the way to the shop. Once there, she gives you a free Potion as part of a promotion her shop is running.

The Sketch Artist

The western exit is currently blocked off by a man who believes that he may have found some extremely rare Pokémon tracks. No one is allowed past until he has made a sketch of his discovery.

Route 103

Route 103

Route 103 serves as a shortcut between Oldale Town and Route 110. Seawater divides the route, restricting travel to the western side for now.

Rival Battle 1

The first battle.

Cross through the tall grass to meet up with your rival, who challenges you to a friendly battle after spotting your new Pokémon. The opposing Pokémon will always have a type advantage against your own. Remember to use Potions if the battle isn't going your way!

Torchic Player chose Torchic

After the battle, May/Brendan heads back south to Birch's Lab.

Birch's Lab

After the battle, follow May/Brendan back to Professor Birch's Lab. Inside, the professor gives you a handy gadget: the Pokédex! This high-tech encyclopedia instantly records information on any Pokémon you see or catch. In addition, his child gives you five Poké Balls to start you off on your journey. Now that you have received some Poké Balls, they can be purchased at all Poké Marts in the region. Buying ten Poké Balls at once, at any location, also earns you a bonus Premier Ball.

Meet up with Mom

As you go to leave Littleroot, you see Mom standing outside. She is proud that you have your own Pokémon. In preparation for your adventure, she gives you a pair of Running Shoes. By holding down the B Button, these shoes allow you to run twice as fast as the normal walking speed.

Route 102

Route 102

Route 102 connects Oldale Town and Petalburg City. The patches of tall grass are home to several new wild Pokémon species.

Petalburg City

Petalburg City

Situated between Route 102 to the east and Route 104 to the west, Petalburg City is the first location you reach to feature a Pokémon Gym.

Meet up with Dad

When you visit the Petalburg Gym, you find your father, Norman, standing in the lobby. He is surprised that you've made it this far from home, but is excited for you to become a Pokémon Trainer like him. A sickly boy named Wally soon enters, and explains that he will be staying with relatives in nearby Verdanturf Town in the hopes that the clean air will do him good. But he is afraid of becoming lonely there, and asks for help in catching a Pokémon to take along. Norman asks that you go with him, and loans him his Zigzagoon and a Poké Ball. Wally leads you back to Route 102, where he successfully catches a Ralts.
